Dees vs. Dogs official update thread!

Hey guys, I was at the game tonight (Granparents have a house in Bendigo which is where i am now).

Don't worry about the scoreboard, as it was one of the worst umpiring displays I've seen in recent memory. Hard to get too worked up about it but it really did ruin the spectacle.

Davey was easily best for us while Miller Sylvia Bate were good and Morton looks ok.

Just to back you up - I was there also and I did feel a bit guilty myself regarding the umpiring.

I also wouldn't be too concerned from either clubs point of view. An enjoyable enough game, but it was quite obvious both sides were intent on not adding to their injury lists.

Good Luck for the rest of the year :thumbsu: (Bar Rds 2 & 15!)

Getting a bit tired & emotional, from what we have heard does it seem that we were just looking for some match time for some of the senior players or did we feast on butt perfomence wise?

The updates seemed to lean towards the former.

I think any pre-season game is about getting match time into your senior players. It's even more for us with so many returning from injuries sustained last year and over the pre-season. Can't hurt that we got more game time into some key players.

For Dog fans, I can't give you much but well done on the win and good luck in 2008. :)

Thanks CFH and also to Supermercado for the updates much appreciated and a job well done!

Good luck with the Dees for season 2008, both of our teams need to rise up that ladder this year!

Couldn't agree more! Let's hope it happens! :thumbsu:

Yes, so do I - both of our teams are starving for that elusive Premiership Cup, surely our time is coming? Again good luck for the season.

I thought the umpiring was shite around the ground, but generally the goals we copped from FK's were justified.

Brock didn't see much of it. Played a lot of the game and what he did was alright but wasn't really a focal point. The problem was that when the Bulldogs actually realised what they were supposed to be doing, stop shitting themselves every time they got it and decided to start putting pressure on there was nobody in the midfield who stood up against it. Davey had some nice touches, but when the onslaught began Jones went missing.

Valenti was alright in patches. Like I said Miller was marking everything that came near him down back, and Carroll wasn't doing too badly either. Having said that it's not exactly the most potent forward line around - and we're not going to be able to rely on being against people like Mince-on every week.

Yes, you can add Rivers, Whelan, Bruce and McDonald but it doesn't turn us into a top 8 team. Anyone who thinks we are is either blindly loyal or addicted to meth.

P.S - For the Dogs fans the reason I have no idea who half of your players are is because I honestly don't care about 15 teams in the competition. Nothing personal. And the 16th is starting to pish me off royally as well.

Anyone else chuckling to themselves that a couple of years ago, these two sides were Victoria's biggest hopes for a flag?

Oh how times can change.

Stupid I know but strange things do happen and 54 yrs since 54 and 10 dollars at 540/1 for us to meet and 2 fav sides . He!

The report on the Melbourne website says Buckley was amongst the best. They've lost the plot.
Was it a bit of rustiness after the week off?

Or is he just not up to the standard required?

Look, I'll concede that as I couldn't see much on the other side of the ground he MIGHT have had 42 effective possessions on the other wing or something but in the 75% of the ground that I could see he not only barely got a touch but the ones he did were mince.

Don't understand Yze making the best in their list either. He wasn't bad, but he certainly wasn't amongst the best. I guess it's all subjective though. I wanted to hear the votes as given by the local radio station covering the game to see a neutral perspective but I got a phone call as I was driving out and only tuned in just in time to hear them say that we're not as bad as the result showed.

You can't believe much of what the AFL site says anymore. That's why we need to go to games to see who REALLY was the best. Buckley is SHITE, he played one good quarter against the Cats and now he's the next best thing.

A few players to come back but you can't help but feel a little worried now. I don't want to place too much emphasis on pre-season games but now I am starting to get a little uncomfortable...

And cheers again for sending the updates Mercs, plenty of brilliant one-liners and great info! :thumbsu:

Hi Guys, I was at the game last night and here is my take on things.

We were in alright shape for the first quarter and a half. The best in this period were Davey, Jones, Silvia and Millar. Jamar was doing well in the ruck and Valenti was busy. Buckley was getting a lot of the ball but seemed to be preoccupied with trying to set a world record for the number of tackles broken. Unfortunately he kept turning the ball over.

I watched the first half in front of the stand on the fence so saw all of the rotations. For those speculating in other threads, Morton is thus far out of his depth. He is leaner than an African middle distance runner and couldn’t find the pace of the game.

After half time the standard of our boys fell away. We turned the ball over and couldn’t find targets. As has be written already, the umpiring was one sided, but that doesn’t explain our inability to hit targets, and our lack of aggression at the ball.

There were some good signs:

1. Davey and Jones were great in the middle;
2. Jamar was much better than I expected;
3. PJ’s baulk on the wing to set up a goal in the last quarter was the stuff of legend (this was right in front of me);
4. Millar and Carroll were good down back;
5. Another run in the legs of Bate, Bell, Brock, Neitz, Pettard, Moloney;

The ‘in need of serious improvement’ signs:

1. Robbo seems neither fit nor interested, perhaps we should have let him go;
2. Velanti and Buckley, whilst busy turned the ball over too easy when under pressure;
3. Holland is still Holland;
4. Players were still selling their team mates into trouble;
5. The ball was coming in high and indirect into the forward line;

Off topic for a second, the crowd was good, but many (re: teenage population of Bendigo) were there just to be seen. It was freezing cold (no global warming issues in Bendigo?) and towards the end I half expected it would start snowing. The standard of umpire was awful, and how on earth can the AFL send you to play a night game in Bendigo if it can’t guarantee the lights will stay on for the whole match.

Overall, the Dogs wanted to win, and thus they did. I got the impression that Bailey is still experimenting with players and rotations, and a win is secondary to that. Morton did one or two things but the kid is still so raw. And lastly, where is Rivers at???? I believe his close to our most important player. He improves the backline 100%, but has thus far been unsighted…..

Thanks

Here is only a brief report as I have cricket to play.

Positives:

-Sylvia did a few hard running things but he always seems to be one kick away from the packs. I'm not sure if that is a strategy or not.
-Davey ran very well around the ground and did some very skillful things.
-Jones same as Davey and probably our best midfielder.
-Buckley got a fair bit of the ball and was confident enough to take on some opponents. Hopefully in the future he'll either dispose of it more quickly or actually break the tackles but he's definitely got some good run, strength and skills and will be close to round 1 selection.
-Miller was alright in defence but I hope he can do more than just loose man in defence against a relatively weak forward line.
-Valenti was busy and has great skills below his knees.
-Yze did a few good things around half back.
-Bate was in a lot of it early but went missing as the game progressed. He still looks lost in the middle and I'd rather play him around half forward when we have a full-strength midfield.

I'll do the negatives tonight.

thanks for all the updates SuperM, CFH nd the others who posted reviews... looks like we stll have a long way to go this year.

If we can loose (we all know it is preseason game) to doggies who looked terrible last week against the bombers this close to round 1 doesn't give me much hope but we still have to wait till season begins a proper.

GO DEES

Great job on the updates everyone, Having to work last night I couldn't keep an eye on it, but to come in and have 10 pages of updates to scroll through was nice (Even if half of it was filled with talk of bulldog shit kickers).

It appears as though next week there will be a few of us going down to Casey fields, I certainly will be, what with living a whole 10 minutes away, so if the unlikely event of Mercs not producing his signiature wit and comments for the pleasure of the board, I'm happy to volunteer my services. Should be the most in depth preseason match coverage so far I think.

Davey looks like he's put on a bit of size aswell.....

Super mate, great stuff really. I enjoyed your match reveiw much better that the well paid journo's ie Carro, Sheahan, Robbo, etc.

Thanks for making the trip as our "man on the spot". :)

Second that, always great reports from the game!

I think this game shows us two things:

1. - We won't play finals this year, although I think we already know that. The thing we need to make sure we do is to get to as many games as we can and still be positive. Last thing we need is for more people to drop off and

2. - Our senior players need ALOT more game time. They can't run out games yet (Neitz, McLean) or look waaaaaaaaay out of form (Robbo).

We can only go up from here.
