So according to the herald sun the Dees have gone with Stuey Dew as their senior assistant coach, guaranteed to take over the head coach job in 2 or 3 years.

Dew has one more year on his contract with Sydney. Is currently stoppages coach but they have offered him the promotion to midfield coach.

I would have thought that it would be good organisational culture to release a guy from a contract when he's given you good service and has a clear promotion on the table. Sydney's offer of midfield coach or even a nominal senior assistant is not nearly in the same league as a guaranteed locked away promotion of senior assistant and senior coach in 2 or 3 years at Melbourne.

Danny Frawley seems clear to raise the AFLCA from toothless tiger and support Sydney (who knew an AFL body supporting the swans there's something new). And this is against establish precedent that assistants get released when senior gigs are on offer.

It works both ways. Getting an offer to be senior coach now is not the same as getting an offer to be an assistant coach now and then two years down the track get a senior coaching role. I don't agree with Sydney's actions here but I can understand why they might be hesitant to release Dew.

Also Colless and Roos need to seriously sort out their spat, will be bad for both teams going forward.

Can you describe every difference between Dew's current assistant coaching position and the assistant coaching position at Melbourne for the next three years?

Well there's one big simple difference. Dew will assume the senior coaching job at Melbourne. It will be written in his contract which will be for longer than 3 years.

If Sydney promote Dew to senior assistant and pronounce him as their next coach after Longmire then he should stay. But how it is the Melbourne job is a massive promotion.

The article says Dew hasn't decided whether he even wants the Melbourne assistant job.

It's not a senior gig.and he is contracted.
He can still do it after he finishes his contract with the Swans. It just means Roos will have to do that third year before the succession plan for Dew kicks in.

Guaranteed senior role. Guaranteed. Senior. Role.

The unwritten rule is that AC's are always let go from their contracts when a senior coaching position is on the line. But of course Sydney don't follow unwritten rules of late, they look for ways to exploit the written ones. Good for them.

Stuff the list you wanted. GUARANTEED SENIOR ROLE. There's your difference.

Colless said at our B&F that they've smoked the peace pipe (thanks Roy & HG) so I think that spat has been done away with. Who knows for sure if there is still something bubbling under the surface though.

It's hard to know what to think without knowing what the Swans are thinking right now. They want Dew to be our midfield coach for 2014 (to replace Leigh Tudor) in the last year of his contract after which he can go and join Melbourne. It seems strange to me that Sydney would "train" Dew so to speak as the midfield coach in order for him to take off and take up a similar position at Melbourne. I can't see Longmire stepping down or being sacked any time soon so Sydney can't really offer Dew that succession plan sort of deal.

If Dew says that he wants out, I think the club will let him go in the end. But they would really have to think about it given we're losing Tudor already. Losing both him and Dew in quick time wouldn't be particularly good so I'd understand the club being hesitant to allow that to happen if Dew isn't definitive about wanting to be at Melbourne in 2014.

For the length of his contract at Sydney there is no senior role. It's the same role he has at Sydney. When his contract is done at Sydney he can go and take up that exact same role at Melbourne for the two years and take the senior spot.

Did you read the article?

Dew, 34, will meet with Swans coach John Longmire and football boss Dean Moore in coming days to consider a new beefed-up midfield coaching role at Sydney.
“Stuart has received an offer from (Melbourne) but hasn’t accepted it and is still keen to consider the role John and Dean offered him some time ago,” Ireland said.
“Until he decides whether he wants to go, there is not much for us to consider. If Stu in the end determines he wants to take on that role ... we will consider that or it might mean him finishing his contract here next year and then going to Melbourne.”

We're going to offer him an improved role.

If he doesn't accept that, it even says that the swans will consider letting him go early. If he does make up his mind that he wants to go.

Which he hasn't yet.

They're hardly handcuffing him to the chair saying you have to stay.

Actually the convention is that clubs will release an assistant to enable him to step straight into a senior coaching position, this is not the situation in this case.

Whether the intention at this time is for him to move into the senior job in 3 years time or not he is effectively moving into a similar position that he now holds.

By the way there is no such thing as a 'guaranteed' senior role. It may at this time be their intention but there could be any number of things happen in 2 or 3 years that mean it wouldn't happen.

The Swans are well within their rights to hold him to his contract.

Is that like a nine year deal where the player and club get what they want now and can change their mind down the track if said player wants to retire?

Leon Cameron is the precedent here.

Might be a totally unrelated issue?

Not really, the CA tightened up the rules a year ago (I think, might have been two?) after a wave of assistants changing clubs, and if memory serves, that contract lengths needed to be met was a big part of that.

Once the underlying rules change, precident under the old rules no longer apply.

If Dew has a year left, Sydney are well within their rights to keep him for another year and Melbourne should just suck it up.

The rule changes were about assistants jumping or getting poached in contract from other clubs for other assistant coaches. It became a joke with assistants jumping around left right and centre and also getting fired at will when a new senior coach came in.

The general principal of releasing assistants for senior jobs still apply.

I see a guarantee senior job whether it starts in 2 or 3 years as still counting under a senior job.

Bit like if you were in management at a company and another company brought you over and said you'd be in line to take over as CEO once the current CEO finishes up in 2-3 years. That's still a career promotion.
