Now that I've got the umpiring moan out of the system, a few things from the game.

- we lacked some poise under pressure at times. Some poor kicks, bad decisions, slipped tackles, etc.
- our starts against Sydney are killing us.
- j merrett, colyer were pretty good.
- Ryder very good. Myers pretty good.
- Hurley our best. Heppell tried hard again.
- winderlich really off tonight with his disposal under pressure, needed a big game from him tonight.

I don't think we played that good to be honest and I wouldn't have been surprised if we had lost by 40+ But the players pushed hard right til the end. Sydney were able to get it from our forward 50 to their forward 50 with ease through the middle of the ground, as well as the wings, far too many times. Better forward defensive pressure would have helped.

It wasn't a % killer. Let's beat the tigers next week.

i genuinely beleive we have a team good enough to win the flag this, on an a neutral ground with decent umpires we are good enough to beat any team.
The Umpiring standard will be much better in finals than it has been in the home and away season. Finals football is tough football and the afl will be far more reluctant to see those ridiculous ducking the head freekicks and soft in the backs wont be paid. Its when the majority of international and part time supporters begin to watch games, and controversial or unjust decisions do not help sell the brand.

I am genuinely apathetic about this game and this result, couldnt care less that we lost. looking forward to next week.

A few things i noted from tonights game
.Ambrose probably isnt up to it at this stage. He doesnt have very good footy smarts and he looked lost quite often tonight, but he does try
.Calls for fletcher to retire after last game were unfair, he played much better tonight, and definitely has something to offer next year
.Myers has a beautiful left hoof,
.Paddy played a bloody good game
.Carlisle thrived in the space without daniher against the bulldogs, but tonight the swans blocked of the space so he couldnt jump at the ball
.Hooker has massive nads,
.The clock in my car is slow and it caused me to miss the first 2 and a half minutes. That was actually the most concerning thing about tonight

Would have lost by more if he didn't play

Absolute rubbish, was slow, provided nothing. I said it before the game he is not fit! Could have easily picked Steinberg to do the exact same job.

Thank **** Buddy graciously decided to put his feet up tonight instead of playing, would have been a slaughtering otherwise.

Team was so insipid, its like they've given up and doesnt give a shit unless Jobe is there willing them on or even Hibbo barking instructions from the backline. Desperately need leadership and senior players who leads by example. Stants? BJ?

Hold your head up high Ryder :thumbsu:, Hurls, Heps, Zach Merrett.
Bellcho better for the run, got some good taps, hard to go back to AFL footy after a long lay-off vs Swans.

Hocking couldnt keep up with Malceski, somewhat blanketed JPK at stages.. but starting to have doubts over him as a full time tagger.
Why not unleash him to try win some clearances? Especially in the absence of Jobe??
He might surprise us ala Scott Selwood last year when he got unleashed from tagging duties.

I appreciate not blaming umpires and yes, we played quite average, BUT, when we've got all the momentum and Sydney are gifted free kicks all the way from defense to goal, then, I'm sorry, umpires are too blame.

Sydney's reputation as the AFL's golden child precedes them and they lived up to it tonight. Goodes' free in the last was a ******* travesty. If that was Joe Daniher, I can guarantee it would be play on.

The AFL can't have Sydney fail, it's worth too much to them. Another reason why people are leaving this game in droves. Sure, they might EVENTUALLY capture the Sydney prime time market, but at the cost of the rest of the country.

I wish I didn't love the EFC so much so I could give this game away.
Umps definitely are not the reason why we lost. Too many players were sh*t, especially by foot.

But this is so tiring. We've lost to the Hawks by 5 points and no one complains. We lose to Melbourne by 1 and umps weren't a factor. Every single time we play Sydney, we get completely screwed by the umps. I've had it with Essendon-Sydney games.
It's been like that for years now.

I'm not angry that they won. We weren't good and Sydney are the better team. It is the way they win that annoys me. That ducking and searching for frees is rewarded. Ughhh
We already predicted this at the start of the game and of course that's the way it plays out.

We were a 5+ goal worse side than them tonight. Umpires didn't lose us the game.

Swans are still the benchmark, we've gotta remember that, regardless of why they're the benchmark.

Our ball use uncharacteristically killed us tonight, I'm taking a fair bit of heart in the fact that bar a couple of really bad clangers, we were absolutely **** deep in that game after quarter time

Perhaps the smaller ground (and their pressure) not as conducive to our game style?

relief ruck?

Righto

SCG is not conducive to anything unless your name is Michael Clarke.

Disappointing game, too mnay silly mistakes. Don't even think Sydney played their best either, but they were too good for us.
Hurley was exceptional, so confident in his marking.

I think a lot of the bad disposal were due to the size of the ground and Sydney's pressure. It's no secret we play our best footy at the MCG.

I felt like we ran out of space. Sydney's style of play, although hard to watch, is pretty effective against Essendon, especially at the smaller grounds. We've played possession footy for most of the year and we didn't get that today.

Richmond next week is a must win

Four goal loss to a Top 2 team is about our current position. Two observations about players - Ambrose must get better below his knees or he has a limited future - J.Merrett needs to protect the ball better when tackled - He doesn't have the core strength to stand up in the tackle and gets stripped of the ball too often.

Do you not understand structures and why Ryder was so good ?

I would have brought in Steinberg for T-Bell once Franklin was out - Coaches are too concerned about going in with a shorter team.

Really, 2 goals 2 is hardly match winning. Ryder would have given us first use of ball if rucked all night.

Of course it's not match winning you clown, but he was the only player that looked even remotely like taking a grab in the forward half. We smashed them in the clearances and even more so in the centre clearances so made no difference who contested the centre bounces.

Yeah but they wouldn't have known Buddy was out until they got the team sheet.
