Watching the game live at certain times we were simply outrun against smaller opponents.Time to change the dynamic of the set up.

At one stage the back 6 were
Kolo
Mackie
Enright
Taylor
Hendo
Lonergan

Stupid set up even Horlin - Smith would have a chance of out running them.
We are relying on pressure upfield which isn't there ?
There is stagnate rebound out from half back as it takes us awhile to generate run.
No recovery at ground level
Limited lateral movement
We also get done over the back all the time.
No pace whatsoever !

Or is it made to look slow when the mids get spanked?

Midfield cost us the game, not the backline.

Saints got a combined three goals from Bruce, McCartin, Membrey and Riewoldt. It's the backline's job to stop them, and they did.

Saints got a combined six goals from Newnes, Weller and Wright. They're all midfielders, and our midfield must be accountable for that.

Back six was pretty good last night, it was their midfielders running forward that did the damage. We play a tall backline which enables us to dominate in the air, the trade off is if we don't mark it we are vulnerable to F50 pace.

Slow ball movement out of the backline is still an issue though. When we move it quickly we normally get one-on-ones up forward or even better free players streaming forward.

Here we go again with this argument. our backs were excellent last night bar Mackies game.

If youre going to point the finger at anyone point it at our 2nd tier mids once more. Danger and Selwood showed so much heart but the team just wasnt lifting with them.

Our outside game needs the work I reckon. Im going to cop a lot of criticism for this but im really not liking Duncans game, find he lacks a lot of influence. Yeah yeah yeah "hes got the best DE in the league?!". Hes always kicking backwards and hitting easy targets the opposition clearly dont care about. Would love to see Motlop and Duncan go back to the 2s and throw both Cowan and Menegola in as replacements. Not that I think they're better players I just really want both of them to lift.

I dont find it an issue, youre never going to catch opposition on a fast break if ita already in the back line. The fast break generally comes from turnover in the midfield before it enters the D50 arc. Our talls to their credit generaly pluck marks from the kickins to. Our transition back is good. Our transition forward is putrid.

I think the defence has been outstanding this season when it comes to structure, intercept marking and preventing easy goals, especially when the midfield and forwards are not applying pressure.
But we always give the opposition a chance to setup their defence because the the majority of the time we'll mark it and hold it up, even if there's space to move.
I would just like to see us work harder to create more link-up work with run and carry out of defence.

Ps. Players up the ground also need to be more proactive and create multiple targets so our defenders are not left with a long kick up the wing as being the only get out option.

On the whole our defence is pretty solid, but I am concerned about the form of Mackie. He is starting to look like the Mackie of 2010, the one who got dropped in the 2nd half of the season. In the last month Kolo has gone past him and I wonder where he fits in considering we need to add more run from the back half.
We did get killed with run and spread last night which was always going to put the defence under pressure.

Not saying at all that the defence isn't good just needs an injection youth/pace
Small forwards have carved us up for years

Is it every board on BF or just ours that create stupid threads sooking about certain things that are actually a positive yet try to make them out to be a negative?
Our backline, LOL! Our backline ensured we didn't lose by 8 goals last night.
It's also a massive reason why we have won 10 games..

The back6 were good and have been good all year.
If the mids turn it over in dangerous parts of the ground makes it hard to defend.
Some slow ball movement has been a issue at times.

I was abit worried at the start of the season after thurlow went down,we don't have a lot of defenders to coming though.

Good small forwards carve everyone up.
That's why they are called good small forwards.

Not sure that I'd quite have Darren Minchington in the good small forward category.

In 15 games not against Geelong he has kicked 11 goals. He does have 6 in his 2 games against us though.

Good point. Let's see how he develops.

Darren minchington is not a good small forward.
Yet he and Denis the menace Armfeild also kicked 3 v us.
They both not good small forwards just took their chances.

Sounds like he may be the new Shannon Gibson or even worse, the new Troy/Shane Bond. Dominated us in the 90's.

Bruest, Membrey, Riewoldt got only a couple between themselves, but conceding 7 to no name city was a killer. Which indicates a lack of research or awareness of them (Minchington, Newnes and the sleeved #34). And having that number 22 develop Eddie Betts-style evasiveness too late in the last, alas it was only Lonergan who was on him trying to tackle. But i think it's more a case of the speed of transition of the ball into the forward line and the speedy way these smalls got out the back behind our relatively tall group. And a lot of that is caused by turnovers upfield or some of those horrid attempts at passing off that Geelong's forwards seem to have developed a penchant for.

This again. If it wasn't for our backs, we would have been embarrassed even more than we were. Our midfield and forward pressure in the first half was abysmal, and our fumbles and horrific decision making led to quick turnovers the other way.
