I have noticed that people on this board all seem to have different views as to what talent is.
I have narrowed it down to 2 area's
Ok in freo terms (my expertese)

Waterhouse:Athletic talent, speed, endurance and ablity to jump

Haselby:Footy talent, footy brain, nows how to get the ball and consistency.

Now you rarely find players with both these types of Talent,I can only think of carey. Now which is the most valued??
My opinion is the Hasley ilk

But then again, it seems all the rage these days to recruit Athletes, and try and teach them football.Waterhoues was a sucess only after many years of heart ache.Haselby isn't an Athlete in that sense, but will be a star for far longer

So I again ask the question, what is talent. And who realy has it.
Players like Waterhouse and Kouta are merely freaks in my opinion who could have excelled in any sport.

Left this part out

Shinboners (think that it)

Said Bell had minimal ablity, just knew how to get the ball and deliever it.
Now I now I believe that is the greatist ability of all for a Footballer to have.
So wouldn' you say then that bell had an enormouse amount of ability.Even though he isn't an athlete.
So isnt he a talent in his own right.

just a thought

Matthew Lloyd has both those types of talent. He's good and running and marking and kicking goals, but he also knows when to move up the field or lead strongly to get an advantage for his team mates.

Oh, he is also a very unselfish player which is important too.

Mcleod without a doubt is the most TALENTED footy player,

Athletic, Fast, Can read a game, gets the ball regularly, can also kick his 5-6 goals, and can perform on the big occasions!

Neither of you two know what real talent is, try this:

Female, aged 16-30, 5'8" , 36"-32"-36" figure, shoulder-length red hair, green eyes, hates clothes, loves older men, does not have the word "no" in her vocabulary.

Signed - Oldfashioned Supporter

Sabre, that's exactly right. I would put Joe Misiti in a similar category to Peter Bell. He has minimial, (if any ) athletic ability, but he somehow finds the ball.

You're dead right. If a player can find the ball, he is full of "talent"...... that first category of talent anyway. Not necessarily the atletic kind.

P.S. The dictionary defines talent as a special aptitude, faculty or gift.

Some players are talented at "finding the ball", but not necessarily talented at running and jumping. The things is, if you can find the ball, you don't really need to run and jump. You've already got the ball !

Yeah, using the term "minimal ability" was probably the wrong phrase, but in my posting (on the Freo board), I was comparing him to someone like Fraser Gehrig who is blessed with natural athletic ability. And it is an important talent to get the hard ball.

You can have all the ability in the world, but it counts for nought unless you have the mental ability to go with it. For many years, it was the mental strength that separated the likes of Carey and Hird from the "nearly men" in Koutafides and Richardson. Kouta had a great 2000, but he has to back it up with two or three more similar seasons.

Using smaller players as an example, players like Bell, Stevens, Ratten, Misiti, and Liberatore have been able to carve out midfield roles due to their determination to make the most of what they have. They KNOW they will never be able to do the same things as a McLeod, Voss, or Buckley, but they do their job with maximum effectiveness from whatever skills they do have.

As for which is more important, I can't split 'em. Every team needs a mixture of the naturally gifted and the hard working to succeed. I don't know what the balance is though....a team that's too naturally gifted may not have the grit, while one with all the grit doesn't have the freakish skills to do the extraordinary (the latter is North's main problem for 2001).
