Leaning against the boundary fence
AFL Club
Carlton
Following on from the 'Defunct Melbourne Clubs' thread, feel free to post below so that we can create a list of defunct footy clubs from country Victoria. Add in the competitions that they played in, their club colours and why they disbanded if known.

Add in the clubs that formed a current merged entity (e.g. Minyip and Murtoa are now Minyip-Murtoa) and any famous players from these clubs, either VFL/AFL players or bush legends.

I haven't lived in Victoria for more than a decade now so I might accidentally miss one or two clubs from the list and some competitions weren't affiliated with the VCFL or VFU and were omitted from the list.

Feel free to list any corrections.

Great work MW, fascinating list and illustration of how clubs evolve with population drift and decline. Have visited or driven through many of those towns over the years, particularly those in the Victorian Wimmera and Mallee and often wondered how the heck they manage to field 2 footy teams each week.

My family are from the Wimmera town of Kiata (current pop 13) and my uncle manned the gate on match days. He told me how they disliked Gerang (Gerung) only 10kms closer to Melbourne but eventually they merged. No surprise they don't exist anymore. Sad but inevitable, but happily they still field a cricket team.

MortlockWatcher, with regards to your first post, Hazlewood Football Club is not defunct, but has been renamed to Churchill Football Club which competes in the North Gippsland Football League.

Any info on port campbell?

Mobbs
Port Campbell last competed in 1991 as a senior club. It continued in the underage competition until about 1998 when it took the role of Princetown underage side. The club wore South Melbourne jumpers. They last played in an Grand Final in 1976 in the Purnim FL. Their last premiership was in the Heytesbury DFA in 1958.

Thanks! Where did you find the info?

Cool, on the topic of Warrnambool anything on the western lions? They existed in 2000 only
Born out of a merger between Mortlake and Derrinullum. for the 1999 season.

Lost the first game of 2000 season to Koroit by about 250 points so club withdrew.

Mortlake split into two, Half merged with Terang and the rest merged with Woorndoo.

Interestingly, Deakin Uni Sharks relocated to Mortlake because of the quality of its town's oval.

Lol that's pretty bad, good idea from them.

I thought Deakin stayed? Their last game I went to and I'm pretty sure that was at Deakins ground

There used to be a mid week or Wednesday league, which played games in Melbourne several years ago. I can't see any mention of it in those lists, but I think that that the Firemen and Railways fielded teams. NAB also had a team and I was reminded of it today when I saw a photo of the committee in a Retired Officers Newsletter. There were 17 in the photo, so they would not have need many more to field a team.

Maybe not in this list because it was a Suburban league. Oh well. :$

Anyone got any information on why Lake Tyers got kicked out of Omeo League after playing in the Grand Final (can’t remember year….maybe late 90s) and never came back? Based on their location I would’ve thought they may have played in the East Gippsland league?
