GIBBS.

Gibbs stands up in Deledio's tackle halfway through that video and then sold some candy to make a fool of another Tiger.

Gibbs' third goal on his wrong foot under pressure was just class.
the amount of class in that 19 year old kid astounds me
and for all those people who say gibbs is weak go to 1 minute 50 seconds in that video
in fact watch the whole video
he is a star

Lids by the length of the Flemington Straight...(ok, Lids by a long neck)...both quality players with different styles...Lids more of a match winner so Lids for mine.

yehh wait till gibbs gets a bnf then talk, and mate for courage, pffttt Deledio won the army award, which we all know what is for. Lids has more talent in his pinky finger than gibbs does overall

Lids and Gibbs are both very versatile players to start with. Lids is ahead in a number of areas, however. Gibbs in the areas where he is better then Lids he is comfortable better.

Gibbs best feature IMO is that he can shut down a star player and yet still end up with his possession in the high twenties. That area in Lids' game is non existent.

Lids' can also end up with flattering stats where in reality did not really effect the game as much as his stats might say, your game against Sydney being the perfect example of that.

I will not go on more as much else I would say has already been said. I am not saying Lids is a bad player at all. He is a star and will be for a long time. He is just not as versatile in the bigger picture then Gibbs. More teams IMO would choose Gibbs over Lids. Also you are being very biased and have not used any examples to prove your point. If you are just being biased here then please leave this thread for the people in the know.

deledio like judd has never had to shut down a player beacuse he is way too dangerous to waste doing that.

Deledio is a weapon in the afl, he can do it all, play onball, half back, or even as a ket forward.

An absolute superstar allready. Would not swap lids for gibbs in a million years. Has way more weapons and match winning ability than gibbs.

While Delidio is going okay ...Gibbs who has been in the system for a much shorter period is already showing he is much classier .

Deledio will be a good player for the tigers ..Gibbs will be a superstar .

Deledio won a B+F, is more courageous, more versatile and better looking :D

Deledio "just" going ok?

He's an absolute JET and has just won his club's B'n'F. Will win a brownlow in the next few years.

You're comments are rubbish

deledio will become an elite player of his time but as much as it pains me to say it, gibbs will go down as one of the elites of modern history. i don't think i've ever seen a more complete teenager in my 30 years of watching footy.

In what is that one skill bias???

Typical Richmond w***er, it's bias when it's against them and very well put and fairly unbiased when it's for them....

So how do you measure skill then mate?

Show me the statistics I can grab where it proves that Gibbs' courage is better than Deledio's.

When it comes to things like that, it will ALWAYS be biased. Clearly the person in question has seen Gibbs more than Deledio. When it comes down to it, I would put Deledio ahead of Gibbs in Courage, you would probably do the opposite.

Why? Because theres no way you can prove or disprove it at all. However, when you have a youtube video of Gibbs shirking a contest and then an official award for bravery being handed out to Deledio, I think that saying he is biased is a very fair comment. :thumbsu:

Haha all the Richmond fans are getting ticked off that their star man isn't winning in the polls. :D

Seriously though,
Deledio - absolute gun of a player, shown that he can match it with the best
Gibbs - absolute gun of a player, shown that he can stop the best, while racking up possesions.

They are very hard to split but I think Gibbs hasn't reached his peak at all. In a couple years I believe he will be top 10 midfielders in comp. He and Judd will be like Ablett and Bartel. Saying this though I believe Deledio could easily be top 10 too, but I still think Gibbs is better.

work ethic: you have a good point. gibbs certainly isn't renowned for his work ethic but i know he improved it drastically since diesel cme back and especially late in the year there were plenty of times he cleared the ball from the centre or from stoppage and then sprinted 100 metres and regained possession. i know deledio is renowned for his wokr ethic on the track but there has been critcism over him not transferring this into a game day situation and playing lazy football. but i guess he may have improved late this season like gibbs ahs and i may not have noticed it.

courage: another good point you raise. i've thought about this and i think deledio has more aerial courage and gibbs has more ground-level courage (no need to bring up the milne incident 2 years ago he copped a bad bounce and went to his knees too early but never took his eyes off the ball) if we look at it overall, gibbs is brilliant at throwing his body or lunging into a pack and beating 2 or 3 opponents for the ground ball. one of gibbs' biggest strengths. btoh players don't have anything to worry about in terms of courage so i probably rate them on a par in this area.

teamwork: gibbs easily. it's so frustrating watching him pass of to a teammate who is in a better position but you know in the back of your mind gibbs could have done better with the ball than the guy he passed to. gibbs needs to start kicking the ball more and using his precise long kicks to more affect. he handballs way too much and this is probably a result of his junior days hen his dad banned him from kicking in matches. and another point, i heard i think it was dermott brereton say gibbs is as good at creating psace for his teammates tha anyone in the league. and you watch him and his football brain is just awesome. he makes dummy leads to perfection and in a huge pack knows how to divert attention brilliantly. this is natural. i'm not saying deleido is a hog by any means but gibbs knows how to bring his teammates into it a lot better than deledio.

one-percenters: again gibbs quite easily. i can see why you'd argue this because deledio is actually good in this area but gibbs is justa freak here. imo the best smotherer in the afl, and those little taps and knock-ons he makes which don't make it on the stat sheet are invaluable. not to mention, he has a super ability to get a spoil in when he looks out of the contest.

tackling: gibbs is the best tackler at carlton since mckay. all types of tackling he is a star. be it run-downs, in congestion anythign. nor have i ever seen a player ever sidestep him and run aroudn him. it is literally improssible. he is brilliant at thrusting his body and laying a strong tackle.

contested ball: i think it's pretty obvious gibbs is much superior in this area. his work in congestion is just awesome. but deledio is a better contested mark if that's what you were referring to.

This is actually a very, very good post with some real fotball knowledge :thumbsu:

The only area where I think you really got something wrong was in the contested ball category.

Deledio's CP stats are actually near the best in the league, he is even above Joel Selwood off memory which I admit did surprise me to a degree.

Watching Lids closely, he wins a lot of contested footy and because of his ability to break into space, it quickly looks like a 'soft' possession.

He is also the type of player where you don't notice him in the packs. I remember at one game early in the year I saw him about two or three times, then at 3/4 time the stats board said he had like 25 possessions. I then focused on watching just him in the packs and I realised why he didn't stand out.

Anyway quality post, nice to see you know your stuff and didn't become much more biased than a neutral fan.
