Should've won by more considering the opposition but I'm happy enough. Just good to see that we had no injuries and younger players such as Walker, Petrenko and Hentschel (he's not young but he looks like he's in for a good comeback year) showing good signs.

Thanks for nothing Hawthorn!

Hopefully this will put them in the AFLs bad books, but i doubt it being the premier Victorian team. I doubt a team such as the Kangaroos or Melbourne could get away with something like this so easily.

Congrats on the win Crows fans.

Does anyone who heard or viewed the game have any insights on any of the Hawks players, whether good, bad or indifferent?

Just saw some TV highlights on the local news, unfortunately the cameras were only focussed on the Crows players a bit like the 5AA commentators were calling it. A friend of mine went and he rang me at 3/4 time, by the sounds of it, it was the Box Hill listed players who were putting in the most - I guess it was their big chance to. He figured it was them because some were wearing #'s too high to think they were on the AFL list. I only recognised Sam? Iles who was a Collingwood player and Steve Kenna who was captain of Sth Adelaide a couple of years ago and Curnow who was our rookie. As for the others I wans't sure who was rookie/list/box-hill

Taylor Walker does sound and look like a kid with a footy brain tho'

Adelaide 15.10 100
Hawthorn 5.3 33

Goals:
Adelaide: Hentschel 4, Walker 3, Knights 2, Tippett 2, Martin 1, Bock 1, Reilly 1, Cook 1
Hawthorn: Taylor 1, Morton 1, Illes 1, Kenna 1, Lowden 1

looking at the score board the Hentchel, Tippett, Walker trio looks promising

Did Gill play ?

Can anyone confirm who were our better players and how did Danger and Petrenko play?

Crows win battle of birds in Berri

Crows Tony Armstrong and Andy Otten fly with Luke Lowden of Hawthorn during Saturday's NAB Challenge match in Berri

ADELAIDE has recorded its first win of 2009 with a commanding 67-point NAB Challenge victory over a makeshift Hawthorn side in Berri on Saturday afternoon.
Played at Berri Oval in the town of around 7200 people near the South Australia/Victoria border, the Crows triumphed 15.10 (100) to 5.3 (33).

The depleted Hawks, who fielded seven Box Hill players and just as many rookies, battled manfully to keep their opponents goalless in the opening term, but the superior class of the Crows eventually came to the fore.

Adelaide, which rested stars like Simon Goodwin, Andrew McLeod and Tyson Edwards, piled on nine goals to two in a landslide 40 minutes of football to establish an insurmountable lead.

Trent Hentschel continued his comeback from a serious leg injury with four goals in a promising display and young duo Kurt Tippett (two goals) and Taylor Walker (three goals) added two more prongs to the Adelaide attack.

Chris Knights (two goals), Bernie Vince and Graham Johncock were all instrumental and Jared Petrenko and Andy Otten did their round-one selection chances no harm with solid performances.

The reigning premiers, who fielded only back-up ruckman Brent Renouf from the Hawks' 2008 flag-winning 22, managed just five goals for the match.

Tippett got the Crows on a roll with two majors to open the second quarter and subsequent goals to Hentschel and Walker triggered the start of the onslaught.

Hawks’ ruckman Simon Taylor did his best to keep the inexperienced side in the game with a clever goal from the boundary line, but he couldn’t prevent a 24-point deficit at half time.

Morton gave Hawthorn fans a glimmer of hope when he cut the margin to 18 points with a beautiful long goal, but it proved to be one of few highlights for the interstate team.

Johncock, Petrenko, Otten and Vince combined to generate some penetrating attack and Alistair Clarkson’s Hawks had no answers.

The bigger-bodied Crows slammed on five unanswered goals to go into the final change 53 points ahead.

A goal to All-Australian centre-half-back Nathan Bock added insult to injury, but the Hawks kept at it, and scrambled late goals to Steve Kenna and Sam Isles.

Brent Reilly, who shared the match-day captaincy duties with Bock, replied with two goals of his own to consolidate the big win.

The Crows will now play the Sydney Swans at AAMI Stadium next Friday night in the final round of the NAB Challenge.

Just got back from the game and a couple of thoughts (I havn't read what has previously posted today so sorry if duplicated)

Very average skilled game in pretty good conditions, most likely due to Hawthorns 2nd rate side on the park the crows lowered their intensity.
Just a couple of observations

Very Good
Brent REILLY - Not sure if he was captain for the game but took on the role as leader/general. If he stays fit will go very well.
VINCE - classy and always had time on his side (surprised me!!)
WALKER - get this bloke in teal (please) does everything very well, ready to fire in 2009, good size

GOOD
TIPPETT - Has got great size, speed. V/g set shot, looks the goods for a improved 2009
Hentschel - didn't do alot (other than the goals!) but moved/positioned well, body looking sound,on track for a fair season.
SLOANE - Seemed to link up well, finds himself around the drop of the ball
BOCK - as you would expect

???
GILL - nup
DANGERFIELD - fantastic size for a kid, looks like he can read the play but continuously gets caught with the ball resulting in the ball being held in or a rushed disposal. Not using any of the speed that people talk of even when the opportunity exists.
DOUGLAS - one second he looks a million dollars then he will burn the ball whilst under no pressure.

The only things I heard they were complaining about him, was him not using his speed whenever they thought he should

Probably the case, but you've probably got to take anything 5AA have to say about Dangerfield with a pinch of salt.

Wouldn't be surprised if they got up in the morning, still crying into their cornflakes about the Crows not taking Ebert. Matching Dangerfield and Rendell voodoo dolls are probably about the place.

Probably got about as much out of that game as we could. The performances of Radar, Hentschel and Walker sound promising.

Thank you Jumbo, much appreciated!
A big thanks also goes out to everyone else in this thread for the constant updates throughout the game :thumbsu:

Sounds like the Walker/Hentschel/Tippett combination are functioning well together up forward.
From the brief vision I saw Walker looked a class above the rest side-stepping around defenders as if they were witches hats at training before steadying himself and slotting another classy goal.

Kudos to the Hawks as well for bringing Buddy and a number of the other senior players along to sign autographs for those who made the long journey across to Berri and all the locals who turned out despite hearing Hawthorn would be fielding a largely unrecognisable team.

Walker will be most effective when he gets the 3rd or 4th best defender. Otherwise I feel may be out of his depth if the number 1 defender gets him.

Should be an exciting developmental season I really dont see us making impact at all for the Top 4 let alone the Top 8.

Unfortunately due to our lack of established, gun forwards.. I feel Walker is going to get one of, if not, the best defenders each week.

i'm not sure about that. with Trent and the Tip up there its going to be interesting to see who goes where.

I guess the good part is we have more than 1 option this year

however

if Walker takes the 1st defender this means either Tippett or Hentchel will get the 3rd defender, this still is a good outcome for the crows

Tippett stationed on the goalsquare, Walker roaming and leading around the place, Hentchell playing a CHF role, i like it. To be brutally honest i don't wanna see Nick (can only kick goals off the ground) Gill in the team, but saying that he will probably end up playing CHF for us.

In a few years that forward line would be somewhat formiddable, however, we need to be patient and let Walker and Tippett develop, whilst hoping Hentchell regain some pre-injury form.

Small forwards wise, we might need to use Porplezia (sorry bad spelling today?) in the forward 50, and one of Edwards or Mcleod should be stationed there to pick up the crumbs.

Exciting times ahead with this Walker, Tippett and Hentchel combo, possibly with Davis to come in, in a couple of years.

How good is it to get a win? Even against a seconds team, the confidence will do our players a world of good and of course, its great for the supporters :thumbsu:

I travelled up to Berri for the game and thought overall that we looked much better than what we did against Geelong and by the sounds of things, how we went against West Coast.

Good Points:

- Sellar was our best behind Bock in defence. He held his opponent well and got a fist to the ball on just about every occasion. He looked more comfortable sending the ball out of the defensive fifty, than he does sending it into the attacking fifty. He also took a couple of marks.

- Hentschel looked like a natural forward today and played his best game in a fair while! He presented very well and didn't hesitate in putting his body over the ball. Plus, two of his goals were checkside kicks, one from either end of the ground.

- For his first game of the pre season, I thought Douglas was good. He didn't seem to get a whole lot of the ball, but it was just nice to see him back out there.

- Our forward line looks ten times better with Tippett in it. He took a couple over head marks and basically slotted right in next to Walker, Hentschel and Jacky. I really hope he doesn't go to the Gold Coast!

- Cook has to be in line for an AFL game in the first few weeks of the season. He moved very well across the ground and is slowly starting to find more of the ball each week.

- Another classy game from Vince.

- Johncock started off really well but I thought he faded a little in the second half. He's getting back to his best though.

- Sloane and Petrenko were two other young players who were reasonable today. Petrenko was more influential than Sloane, with his bigger body and SANFL experience, but I can see something under all that blond hair of his.

- Armstrong showed flashes, fearlessly going back with the flight of the ball a couple of times, and he used his pace. He didn't get a whole lot of game time though. I'm looking forward to watching him in the SANFL this year.

- Bock was his usual best, but that dislocated finger sure looked like it hurt!

- There's possibly an AFL player somewhere in Schmidt, however, his disposals weren't overly effective. He did alright.

- I thought we were able to get our arms free in tackles for once and we didn't get pinged for holding the ball as often. It was close sometimes, but just that extra effort to get the handball away was much better than in previous weeks.

- Some of the fluent ball movement through the centre and down the wings was good to watch, especially with a number finishing in goals. Our rebound from defencive fifty was better.

- Our younger players in Sloane, Cook, Petrenko, Walker etc. all seem to be handling the pace of the game much better.

Some not so good points:

- Despite playing well last week, Gill barely had an influence on the game. He spent most of his time in the forward line going up for hangers.

- Griffin didn't play much of the last quarter and walked back to the rooms with ice on his right knee. He didn't have crutches or anything, so hopefully its just a bruise.

- Jacky didn't see as much of the ball as I would've liked. Early on in the game when the ball would spill free in our forward fifty around the forty metre mark, he just needed to be there. We needed someone to crumb in those situations. I think he tries to play the role of a leading forward, whereas he should focus on getting to the drop of the ball on the ground.

- A couple of Knight's kicks were directly turned over, including one which resulted in a Hawthorn goal.

- Dangerfield didn't have much of a say in proceedings. He just didn't have space to run and the one time he did, he was under pressure and was forced to dispose of the ball hurriedly. He won't be able to play his type of game all the time.

- When the ball did get turned over it was usually damaging as we were left short in defence. Most turn overs came from direct skill errors or handballs being cut off.
