There were numerous interviews done & articles written around the time he was traded. You might like to have a look at his thread in The Locker Room. The following is quoted from post #6 (itself a quote from an unlinked source):why do you say that, he had not played a senior game in defense.
we certainly hoped he might be able to become a defender, but not based on the 2 senior games he played in and rucked.
So, when the chance of a fresh start came via the Adelaide Crows he jumped at it, signing a new two-year deal and accepting a challenge from Crows coach Neil Craig and recruiting manager Matt Rendell to make the key defensive post at centre half back his own.
And this (post #13) from an article by Katrina Gill (from the afc website):
Adelaide recruited Moran with a view to using him as a defender, but a season-ending knee injury to Rhett Biglands means the 199cm Queenslander will spend more time in the centre square.
“Being a tall player, you’re always going to have some ruck duties, but I’d like to see myself somewhere in the back line and possibly a bit in the ruck as well,” Moran said.
Like it or not, he was recruited as a defender who could ruck a bit. Whether or not he ends up in that role in the longer term is another matter entirely.

and didn't much further part, must have done really badly last week and is paying this week.
