The issue is we need to find and develop another tall defender, the Rutten going down injured liability is too great

Unless we convert either Gill or Hentchel into a defender we are forced to continue with persisting with Moran, lets face it it is only a trial game so no better time to keep with the education process....

I have no issue with playing Moran down back while the scoreboard means nothing, hopefully Westies will play Moran as a key defender to give him some time in the role.

We just cant sit on our hands and do nothing, if we lose rutten we need a plan B, C and D
Hentshel as a back. I like it.

Last year in the North vs WWT game at Wodville Oval. Hentshel and McGregor both played back, and both played well.

With Rutten still obviously out injured, who will play on Roughead? (just out of curiosity, I know it's on;y a trial match). Anyway, it wouldn't bother me if we lose (just looking forward to the youngsters again.) Hope that Danger will finally be selected.

If Tippet plays we could always put Trent H to CHb and Bock onto Roughhead.

I am sure Trent would be happy to play any position as long as he is getting a game

Trent doen back will all depend on whether he has retained his acceleration and pace over a short distance.

Christ I'm getting too old for Bigfooty.

It will be interesting to see Hawthorn's approach for next week

Today the Hawks lost Stephen Gilham (knee) Campbell Brown (ankle) and
Grant Birchall (Hammy).

Given the fact the Hawks depth is currently being servely challenged Clarko may chose to rest one or two key players as a contingency given their is one more trial match after next week.

Williams, Roughhead and Mitchel have all had two good hit outs, this would give an opportunity to the likes of Mitch Thorp

I hope they play their strongest possible side

Moran may look bad in defense because he's playing a KPP role. As I've said in another thread, you put Rutten and Symsey back in that defense line and play Moran in a Bassettesque "spare man in defence" position and he soon will become very valuable. Right now, it's not working, but the potential is there.

Also - could someone put the live radio link up when it's found.... 5aa were not allowed to stream it last week so i assumed it wasn't on only to find it WAS! Cheers.

Let's not go nuts over a trial match where players were played totally out of position.

Moran is a fine defender, he just needs to not be a key defender that is required to stick to a player. By that I mean, play him in defence by all means, but not on the FF.

Of course, since this is a trial match that, in essence, means absolutely nothing, and we don't actually have a FB at the moment, what harm is there in playing him there and seeing how he goes? Or anyone else for that matter. Put Bock at FB and see if we can rely on him if need be. Try out Stevens. It doesn't matter if we lose this match at all, as long as we learn something from it so that if Rutten injures himself during a period of time where we actually have 4 points to gain, we know what to do next time instead of putting Johncock and Moran on a key forward and costing ourselves the match.

Moran does not have the footy smarts to play last man in defence, or the brute strength required. He is more suited to CHB but we know he wont play there as we have the best CHB in the comp in Bock. I would rather Otten be played in the Bassett role. He is 192cm . Is quicker than Bassett, is composed and has a long kick. I think we should play him there for the remainder of the NAB cup as when all our players are back he wont get alot of time in the midfiled so lets give him a position he can own.

It makes no sense to me why people would be suggesting Moran is hopeless as a defender. He is young, has excellent speed, excellent size and yes, he is still developing a football brain. He was recruited after Franklin took us apart in the Elimination final in 2007. We need a player of his size, speed and agility that can take a KPF should that be the type of player required. And this isn’t just to combat Franklin, with resting ruckman up forward Moran is potentially a terrific match. Is he where he needs to be yet? No. Is he guaranteed to work out? No. Is the NAB Challenge series the perfect opportunity to be exposing him? Yes.
The Hawks backline is currently decimated. Hopefully our forward line can take advantage. Does anyone know Adelaide’s stats for forward entries for the past 3 games (or where I can find them)? I’d be interested to know how often we are getting the ball down there at the moment.

Well like I said, I dont think theres room for Moran as we have Tippett, Griffin? and Maric as probably definate starters this year. I really like Tip in the ruck so I would love him to get some time in the ruck. Griffin isnt even near becoming a KP when resting atm, as Maric can kick goals when were struggeling to find a target.
As for Stevens, he can go back and forward.
So where does Moran fit?
Theres no room for him in the rucks, its too tall in the forward line and there wouldnt be room for him anyway.. and for the backline, he doesnt play well there.
And I thought that wing idea was bad.
Something tells me that we are really going to miss Massie down back this year especially with Stevens needed up forward (only player who can kick straight) and with Moran looking like a headless chook back there. I can only hope that Truck and Bocky stay fit...

Really? It's 2 and a half hours from where I live and I live an hour away from Adelaide so an hour closer to Berri.

Ah, but it depends on speed of vehicle, wind speed and direction, humidity and weight of driver and/or passengers.

Yeah, its kinda like the fact that you can make ice quicker using boiling water. The further you are away from the destination at the start, the quicker you get there.

Give Moran a go. He may well become a top backman. Too early to call him as a dud. He's only been playing the game 5 minutes.

Spot on. I cannot believe Moran is copping a bake so early. He is very much a junior, undeveloped player who thus far has shown very promising glimpses. Unfortunately when we talk about our young developing list this bloke is not mentioned along with the likes of Kite, Otten etc. There is a perception he is an established player...he is not.

From what he has shown thus far he must be persevered with. I saw him in defence against Sydney last year and he did a damned good job. Won a game for us against Carlton..but he is young, relatively new to the game and will take time, patience and coaching...get off his case:mad:
