why do you say that, he had not played a senior game in defense.

we certainly hoped he might be able to become a defender, but not based on the 2 senior games he played in and rucked.
There were numerous interviews done & articles written around the time he was traded. You might like to have a look at his thread in The Locker Room. The following is quoted from post #6 (itself a quote from an unlinked source):

So, when the chance of a fresh start came via the Adelaide Crows he jumped at it, signing a new two-year deal and accepting a challenge from Crows coach Neil Craig and recruiting manager Matt Rendell to make the key defensive post at centre half back his own.

And this (post #13) from an article by Katrina Gill (from the afc website):
Adelaide recruited Moran with a view to using him as a defender, but a season-ending knee injury to Rhett Biglands means the 199cm Queenslander will spend more time in the centre square.

“Being a tall player, you’re always going to have some ruck duties, but I’d like to see myself somewhere in the back line and possibly a bit in the ruck as well,” Moran said.

Like it or not, he was recruited as a defender who could ruck a bit. Whether or not he ends up in that role in the longer term is another matter entirely.

How? when West Adelaide will play him as a ruckman and if they don't he will be a key forward?

fair argument.

and anyway he is 200 cm and 100 kg and can run like a 6 footer - name me one SANFL forward that would challenge him. In the SANFL as a defender, he will not learn a thing.

not so much.

what he doesn't do, is concentrate and apply himself. doesn't matter how big or quick he is, if he's off having a wander (as he does) and a turnover comes back to his man. that's what he needs to learn - or actually show aptitude for.

if we want him to learn accountability, better for him to learn in the sanfl. which, won't happen because they won't play him there. but I can't see how discipline, application, and accountability can only be learnt at AFL level.

in general though, I expect him to play 10, maybe 15 games. in a variety of roles, still remaining unsettled at year end. I can see us trying him as 3rd tall, but Bassett always had half an eye on his opponent - he won't, and this might cause us to throw him up forward; where he might have success as a westhoff, surprise lurker, until closed down; then some backup ruck work, where he will do good things around the ground, less at the actual ball ups.

we are talking about a guy without a position, and he has no value to us unless we find one for him. its very easy to be flattered by his traits, but our challenge is to find a way to fit him into our structure and in a position. if we can't do that, and so far we haven't, and North couldn't, then he won't have a future with us.

all of that said, I do like his cockiness. He backs himself, and maybe, just maybe, he "could" have the ability to become a chad cornes type tall running midfielder/ruck rover.

I actually don't mind this idea, though it's more because I don't have much confidence in Moran as a backman than anything.

me either.

Moran, on the other hand, doesn't strike me as a natural footballer like Trent and I don't trust him not to leak goals in defence.

seconded.

I'd prefer to see him playing a role where somebody else is worrying about him, rather than him having to worry about someone else (if that makes sense).

that makes very good sense, and I think is a very astute call. if you have lemons, make lemonade.

I absolutely get your thinking here. :thumbsu:
I can tell you that I have heard from a few insiders that they are impressed by Martin and Petrenko most out of the young blokes. Im sure the insiders know more than you and I ( maybe not I ) but they see them train and all. Dont bother even trying to get the source out of me cause I will not tell you.

I don't dispute we recruited him, with the idea he might become a defender.

I dispute that he is a "reasonably good defender already" and that is "what we expected of him when we recruited him"

we hoped we could turn him into one, not that he was already decent and expected that from him. that's not really the same thing.

Outstanding post. Can't argue with any of the logic you've expressed. Shows what you're capable of when you play the ball and not the man. :thumbsu:

Didn't see if this was already talked about but can someone tell me what the go is with tickets?

Do we buy them pre-game or at the gates?

Stevo is about as athletic as me after a night on the piss. No his strength, it is Morans however.

Im in no way saying Moran would be able to hold off Roughy, hell, he'd probably conceed a good 4 goal quarter from standing in the wrong positions. But we're not at the stage where we'll be playing for a home Preliminary final.

I think Moran should go back to the SANFL for a lot of this year and learn how to play defense, but we have to develope a Truck back up.

FFS I have tried to avoid these kiddy posts but I can't any longer. Moran is best suited as a FF/2nd Ruckman. He is being played as a stop gap defender at the moment. Having said that he could also slip into Bassett's role. He has the athletic abilty for that role. PIHL you really should stick to the school books, it will pay off far more if you did. Your footy smarts are sadly lacking.

Just curious as t why you quoted my post, talked nothing about it and directs your post to PHIL?

There are tickets available for pre-purchase. The afc site has the details on where they can be purchased from. If you are a season ticket holder for either competing clubs, then entry is free.

:thumbsu: a good summary and i agree for the most part, however, IMO Moran is best suited as a ruckman roaming around the ground and i think that a year of extensive ruckwork development would put him way ahead of Griffin in the pecking order (and if he could get some aggro in his game, then ahead of Maric too)

Sorry I should have been more specific. Your statement about Moran spending a year in the SANFL is so stupid. PIHL should be studying the school books not trying to pretend she knows football. Hence the following post re her atrocious spelling efforts.

Nothing is wrong sending him back to the SANFL ffs.

no offense, but I couldn't give a fat rats clacker who your source is.

there is little to go by (yet) on the petrenko call, and Martin certainly seems to be in favour. which is good news.

My comment about Moran back to the SANL was in relation to him learning FB if he was not in out best 22 in this 3rd defender/release player role he seems to be atm.

If he is dropped, he should spend that time playing FB.

On a related note, a few mates and I were talking to Luke McGuane last night and he said FB was his least favourite possy to play, as opposed to the CHB role he usually picks up. He said it was an extreemly hard place to play.

We should take this into account when judging Morans attempts, as well as noting the importance of having a back up for Truck. If he goes down in the regular season we'll need insurance. This is why I believe if Moran isn't in our best 22, his time would be better spent as a FB in the SANFL then a ruck or wing or linkman.

Tippett, Douglas named in squad

Adelaide could include several players who have not appeared so far in its NAB campaign for Saturday’s game against Hawthorn.

Kurt Tippett, Richard Douglas, Patrick Dangerfield, Tony Armstrong and rookie Chris Schmidt have been named in Adelaide’s 29-man squad for the NAB Challenge game in Riverland town Berri.

Tippett (knee) and Douglas (hip) were unavailable for both the NAB Cup game against Geelong and NAB Challenge match against West Coast.

Dangerfield, who also has had an injury-interrupted pre-season, and former Brisbane Lion Schmidt both played well for SANFL club West Adelaide in its internal trial last Saturday.

Scott Thompson will rest this weekend and Brad Moran, who has played in the games against Geelong and West Coast, has been left out of the 29-man squad and will play for West.

The match starts at 4pm at Berri’s main oval.

The squad is: Gill, Reilly, Tippett, Griffin, Cook, Edwards, Jacky, Doughty, Shirley, Walker, Mackay, Vince, Johncock, Maric, Knights, Otten, McLeod, Douglas, Stevens, Sellar, Sloane, Dangerfield, Petrenko, Goodwin, Hentschel, Armstrong, Martin, Bock, Schmidt.
