One thing I've really enjoyed this year is the zero tolerance for Deliberate Out Of Bounds. It always used to drive me crazy when someone would boot the ball out of bounds, thirty metres up the line. Everyone knew it was deliberate, but the umpires always just signalled for a throw in.

Full marks to the umpirs for cracking down on this blight on the game.

The peasants don't like it and they are slow to accept change, but this is a definte improvement.

Keep paying them, umpires! :):thumbsu:

Personally I dislike it (but then I was a fullback who hated them ever bringing in the out on the full rule ;)).

I think a 30-40 yard kick up the line is fine and shouldn't be penalised.

Watching the Wobbles v Sydney.Deliberate out of bounds rule is just ridiculous. Whoever the moron is at AFL house that pushed the extra policing needs to hang their head in shame.
Sir,Madam.. you are an idiot!

Totally ridiculous that where there is no intention to ge tthe ball out of bounds, such as the fumble on Friday, or kicks out of mid air/off the ground, it is nearly always a free kick. Yet, a player can walk it over deliberately with minimal pressure, or ouch it over deliberately during a contest.
They need to adhere to the rule.
The free kick may also be given if the umpire decides the ball has otherwise been put out of bounds deliberately. If a player makes insufficient attempt to keep a ball in play, a kick will be awarded against that player

Does anybody like the rule??
I haven’t come across anybody that does.
Speed up the game? Bullshit!
It slows the game as nobody moves up field to a throw in ; they just stand and wait coz they know the ball is coming straight back.
If I kick 50m upfield out of play it should be a throw in forcing players to move quickly upfield.Doesn’t this help relieve rolling mauls? Blight on the game!

Agreed. The odd very deliberate call is okay but it's becoming far too common

nope.
Never knew why made the change years back and still don't to this day.

This rule only exists in it's current form because the AFL are too arrogant to admit the SANFL version of the rule is objectively better.
Correct. The first year it came in there were a few SANFL fans not keen on it, but by the end of the season everyone was comfortable with it. Sometimes the simple rules are the best.

The current situation with the afl is just insane. Watching Port Geelong it was clear that they were going so strict on their interpretation that it was 90% the rule for the match but sometimes not. Just infuriating.

The problem with the rule is that it’s a rule that requires interpretation by its very nature.

The old way doesn’t require interpretation. Neither does the SANFL way. Pick one of those. The current way is lunacy.

The classic I saw was Curnow about to be tackled so he kicked the ball ahead of play to give himself the opportunity to run onto the ball and have a shot for goal. Unfortunately, the ball reached the line before he could gather it. I thought it was clever forward play, but for some reason, the umpires thought he lacked intent :)
