I agree, and this is quite funny, as I've used the same arguement with the Wellingham scenario (ie. why would Melbourne use a draft pick on Wellingham when he has categorically said he doesn't want to be there), and everyone is under the impression he would be worth the risk...
Completely different scenarios for mine.

Mitch signed his intention to stay here and that commitment lasts for another year, he is under contract with the club. He has mates here and is already a part of the Eagles. He should also know that the club have to do what is right by them as he is the one who has changed his mind before the end of his contract so any efforts they make to facilitate his return home, are a favour to him and they will need to receive adequate compensation, otherwise it's not unreasonable to expect him to honour his contract.

However if Melbourne were to pick up Wellingham knowing he had entered the draft for the sole purpose of going back to WA then they will be bringing in a player who they know doesn't want to be there, knows nobody at the club and knows they picked him up despite being aware of his wishes to return home. i.e. they've shown they don't give a toss about what he wants they just want him to play footy for them.

Of course you would - question is, does your club want to keep someone on their list that just doesn't want to be there? They may, but most clubs aren't happy with that. Disheartened players at your club that you have forced to stay against their will aren't really going to help you, and I'd be shocked if your club didn't realise that. So, as much as he's contracted, I think that reduces this amazing bargaining position you're all talking about because of his contract.

In the end, I'm not sure if the deal will get done. But time will tell.
If it is just opportunity and not that he doesn't want to be there?
So he stays a year and we give him more opportunity and Glass retires at the end of next year? Then what would Brown do?

I like the Saints supporters who acknowledge that their team needs a key back. Then argue that he is injury prone. Why would StKilda be going after him?
You need to realise your club has played their hand, shown interest and Brown is still under contract.
I have no idea what would get the job done, but saying "he is injury prone" & "we could go after another defender" isn't really great when your team has stated interest and made an offer.

For the posters talking about the our depth leaving. I too wonder about this as they say these days to push for a premiership you need 25 - 30 players that can play regular footy. This could be one of the issues we face with the fact our MC back people in even when they are horribly out of form. Unless injury or suspension we dont tend to ask players to sit one out.
Whether you agree with it or not this may be the bi-product of being stubborn on match day. The next in line see this stubborness and want more time elsewhere.
For instance Stevens, always the sub, bar the game against GWS. Would prefer that when you bring an extra in that they get a full game to show what they can do, and feel part of the team.

Obviously it's not set in stone, our second rounder is pick 34 so that plus Cripps would be more likely
Massive underrating of Cripps on this board, I wish he wasn't leaving.
You presume he fills a need for us. He doesn't. No guarantee that he would even play a game next year where as Brown if a necessity for the Saints and will play 22 games if fit.

Any one playing freo
Not happy with pick 24 for brown. Cripps is only worth a 3rd rounder if Ebert was worth a 2nd.

We are losing a lot of tallent.

Saints must have a few delistings planned to trade one for three. And it's still ridiculous GWS can even access or trade Lee.
They've delisted Peake and a few others already, Raph Clarke probably won't get a new contract and they've got no rookies to upgrade.

Think I was taken out of context slightly... I agree the scenarios are different, and I would be surprised if Brown tried to walk out given he is contracted, all he can expect is for us to do what we can.

I have no problem with players who can not win a position in our 22 leaving for opportunity. Such is life. Out loss to Brisbane cost us Top 4 - it is that competative. We should not offer charity games to keep people happy.

I am also blindly unaware of our strategies for trade and recruiting. But from the outside it looks like we are reactive and are losing ground to clubs like the Saints that are agressively targeting needed players and strategies to get them. Lee for example. Clearly they have convinced Brown of the need to move. This is just good business.

Who knows who within the club is responsible and what are we trying to achieve.

mmm

brown > cripps + 24

24 > wellingham

likely??
Realistically, we were never going to part with a first round pick for Brown, so this trade doesn't change anything. Most WC supporters demand a first round pick. Most St Kilda supporters are saying he's not worth more than a 3rd round. Realistic result that the clubs may come to? Maybe a second round. It's been said many times by many people that fair negotiations leave with both parties unhappy.

I expect something like this to happen. In fact the fact we've got pick 24 now makes me think that we may use that to trade to you for Mitch Brown. I think that's over paying, but wouldn't be surprised if the Saints made their trade with GWS today after talking with you guys about what you might want for Brown - and this seems to me like it might be exactly it.
