Well the obvious 3 would be Butler, Kerr and Glass/Cox
Fair enough, I agree with that.

I guess my concern is if we go down this road we'll be left extremely young, with 9 first and second year players on our list starting the 2015 season, many of which would be small % chances of becoming decent AFL footballers due to the lateness they would have been taken in the draft...

Then again, our top 30 picks have done so well over recent years, we might have more luck going deep!

Does anyone on this thread want to do me a favour and direct me to a potential delist/trade/draft prediction for this off-season? Was going to do one myself but I would probably just go with the likely outs which someone has probably already done.

Thanks for any help :thumbsu:

This guy had a pretty good idea I think :D

My guesses:
- Nico retired, unfortunate but can't be avoided.
- Hams delisted. Dick gets one more year.
- Embley and Selwood politely told it would be best if they retired on their own terms amidst great fanfare, with an Ash Hansen-esque delisting if they don't.
- Smith traded.
- Brown hopefully stays on. If he walks, then trade in another key back as cover (Hooker probably unavailable now. Angus Litherland from Hawthorn? Delaney from North?)
- Promote McGovern and Sinclair, give Bennell and Tunbridge another year on the rookie list.

Out: Nicoski, Hams, Embley, Selwood, Smith (poss. Brown)
In: McGovern, Sinclair, 3 draftees, 2 rookie draftees, (Brown replacement)
Would probably amend that now to say 4 draftees, 1 rookie draftee and keep Sinclair on the rookie list.

We've got the pies' mid third rounder to use still don't we? Don't think we activated it to use this year? Not sure what trade value it would have.

If we used four picks it would be good to if we could use our 1st/2nd/3rd and then another maybe second round for Brown. Not sure what Smith could get us if he left.

I can't see Morton on your list - you couldn't possibly be thinking of k............. nah!
Fair point. We gave Oakley-Nicholls a couple of years to get the Richmond out of his system so I'd hope we give Morton the same amount of time, but he might very well get the chop.

I'm hoping that we can get Bennell and Dick on the park for a few games this season to help decide whether they are keepers or not for next season. Morton is definitely in this boat. Smith too? - he seems to polarise BF Members - he's loved by some and hated by others. I love him - I just love the way he takes possession from a team-mate and pauses to sort his hair out before shanking the ball OOF or to an opposition player - and some people say he has no skills? I think we'll be playing Lycett for the next 3 weeks at least - need to get NicNat ready for next season.
The more players we can look at this season, the clearer we will be on who's staying and who's going. I don't mind a bit of a clearout - the draft is deeper this year/we might get involved in free trade period/we might pick up another Bennell/Wellingham/Cripps/Morton - surely one of them will work out? We might get seriously lucky and find another Hutchings or Carter (potentially good).
Let's play these kids against Sydney - what's the point of bringing back Aselwood (or even Kerr/Shuey/Scooter) for this game. An honourable loss is still a loss.

I actually think our rookie list is very strong and has been used really well.
It's not bad, better then years gone past recently for sure. Sinclair seems to be a good depth player and I would like to see him upgraded when cox retires, not before. Bennell is very promising, like his progress-Another year as a rookie though.

Tunbridge, I do like, but I have a feeling that if we go into the draft with a few picks we will delist him. My reason for this is because this year is a decent draft in terms of midfielders and we could potentially pick up some pretty good players. At this point you would hope if west coast do pick up some good young mids, they give them game time and ultimately tunbridge would move further down the pecking order. I like him, and would be happy to have him on the rookie list for another year, but he is in no way a certainty.

And McGovern has made solid progress in recent years, if we do lose Brown I think having both him and McInnes wouldn't hurt (hoping one could be groomed as a KPD).

As for the main list, I'd still like to get saints 2nd pick for Brown and I do think a ready-made should hold strong value. But I don't think it would be in the saints best interest to make this trade happen, they are a long way off challenging and should go full out on the draft imo.

Hams delist.
Nicoski, Embley + selwood retire.

That would give us 5 picks (assuming brown leaves), potentially two in the second round and one each in Rnd 1 + 3. Then using our 4th round pick for rookie upgrade. And then one or two rookie picks.

And there are plenty of potential delists/retirees in years to come... Cox, Kerr, Butler, Morton, Colledge, Dalziell, Dick.

I would delist Nicoski, Embers, Hams and A.Sel ahead of those guys ;)
Bennell, Tunbridge, Sinclair and McGovern are a very solid set of rookies. :thumbsu: All have a shot at playing on the senior list next year.
I wouldn't argue if they all were promoted. I think we will have enough vacancies if Embley, A Selwood, Kerr and Nikoski retire and I feel pretty sure Hams and possibly Dick will be delisted. There is unfortunately also the possibility that Newman will go if the latest drama isn't explained. Added to that is the real likelihood that Brown and Smith will want to be traded. That should leave 4 to 5 vacancies even if all rookies were upgraded. In normal trade situations (pre the Suns GWS debacles) the Eagles have been good at maximising their trade options and draft picks.

If we're trying him in the role he appears to be being groomed for, ie defensive midfielder, I think he actually has some merit still being on the list. I'm not a Morton fan, trust me, never have been, but since he started being played off HB for EP he started looking a little better. Give him run with roles and see what happens. There's no rush, IMO, to move him on yet, although he is still on my list of potential delistees. Make sense?

Going into trade and draft week this year, this is what I'd be doing:

Senior Players/Contracts
- Retiring two of A. Selwood, Kerr or Embley. One to stay on would be handy (First preference is Kerr, second is Embley) as I don't think we should culling all the old boys straight away.
- Nicoski must retire
- Cox is on single year contracts from here on in; still competing at a reasonably high level but his impact has been nullified due to Naita's injuries and his gradual decline this year.
- Offering one last contract to Glass. Still competing at a high level but if Hackdorn's article is true about delayed recovery, I'd back the captain in to make the best judgement about his own ability. I think next year is a fair shout though.

OUT: Embley, A. Selwood, Nicoski.

Trade
- Brown for a lower team's second round pick (Brisbane, St. Kilda, Carlton and Adelaide (Post-Rutten) are obvious candidates). If they have some depth midfielders that might be worth a look at, throw in someone as steak knives.
- Brown packaged with an upgrade to a higher first round draft pick must be considered as well if it can be done.
- Find another KPP through Free Agency or Trade with our back flankers an obvious place where depth can be sacrificed.

IN: Second Round Pick
OUT: Brown

Delisting
- Hams is still under contract IIRC, but if we can get rid of him he's an obvious candidate to go.
- Dick is the same, hasn't shown enough at WAFL level this year and is struggling to get on the park, which is the reason he was a rookie last year in the first place. His place on our list can be nipped in the bud early if we're smart.
- Other candidate: Morton, but we really need to find out what he can do before this season is done. I'm undecided if he'll make it at this level though.

OUT: Hams, Dick

Rookies
- Tunbridge stays on for another year.
- McGovern to get upgraded
- Sinclair to remain rookied for another year.
- Bennell to get upgraded

IN: McGovern, Bennell

Drafting
- We should only be targeting midfielders through the whole draft. Players with at least 5 out of the 7 following attributes must be considered:

- Fast/Agile
- Creative and Skilful with their ball use
- Versatile enough to play inside/outside and work off the flanks
- Big Bodied
- Can win their own ball
- Hit the scoreboard
- Run both ways

Anybody with 4/7 or less of those traits is third round/rookie list fodder. This draft is filled with classy mids and we need to cash in.

Possible names to target first round: Sheed, Bontempelli, Dunstan, Lennon
Second Round targets: Freeman, Acres, Garlett, Cripps
Third Round Targets: Robertson

Rookie Draft
More midfielders, obviously pickings will be thinner there but we need to get some more regardless. Dylan Loos is one in particular to look for.

IN: First Rounder, First/Second Rounder (From the Brown trade), Second Rounder, Third Rounder, Bennell, McGovern, Rookie #1, Rookie #2
OUT: Brown, Embley, A. Selwood, Nicoski, Hams, Dick.

What about Ash Smith? He's been made to look pretty ordinary by Wilson and now Carter.

Some great in depth analysis provided here :thumbsu: Nicoski and Dick out is a little harsh but from a list management view logical. Id imagine we will keep one or both on though going by what they usually do. I think Ash Smith is a trade option. Hasn't come one like we hoped but offers something. A club like Melbourne would take him and we will pick up a nice pick. Got plenty of half back options can afford to lose him.
