If that's true I'd rest him for the rest of the year and give Lycett an extended shot. He's dominating the WAFL and deserves a go, and Cox deserves a rest if that's what he needs.
While Naitanui is running out of gas in the first half i doubt we'll see Cox rested. Naitanui getting a rest for Lycett at the moment seems like a better solution.

I'm inclined to think it's a waste of time. Should divide all those guys that are are zero chance of being with us in 2015. The half who can contribute the most in 2014 get a contract.

Embley - shouldn't play on. To do so would be selfish.
A.Selwood - his game has broken down. Can't play effectively at AFL level.
Nicoski - body is shot.
Morton - bigger version of Dalz.
Dick - body is shot.
______________
Dalziell - can run, can't do much else.
Hams - not a forward.
Kerr - body is shot.
Cox - fading fast.
Glass - playing great football but won't be around.

Players with genuine concerns.

Brown - seeking a trade?
Newman - GBH and associated problems.
Sheppard - has talent but will he become a consistent AFL player?
Smith - same as Sheppard.
Brennan - at the moment he's pretty poor. Wins friends because of his heart.
Butler - soft tissue problems combined with middling talent.
Wilson - poor speed and endurance. Role?
McGinnity - a very average footballer.
Colledge - soft tissue, AFL role?
That's half the list - bit of a concern.

If we beat the Swans I would only rest him against GC and/or Dogs as we would still have a chance at finals.

Surely not?

My premise is that he is training the house down of course but considering the talent he has, his running ability and his size.. His first two years in the system were promising.

He was close to the best runner at Melbourne, came here and was barely top 10. If he sticks himself next to a Dalz or Masten I have some hopes for him.

ST KILDA will put a high price on Nick Dal Santo that will effectively rule the veteran midfielder off-limits in this year's trade period.
The Saints are headed for a major list turnover at season's end to help inject much-needed top-end draft talent and an established key backman.

Dal Santo, 29, is one of the club's few veterans who will attract genuine interest in the month-long trade period in October.
Brown for Dal?

With a new coach he would slot in perfectly for 2 seasons. Even more so if we think we can still challenge for a flag.
I think we're probably 2 or 3 seasons away from realisticaly challenging for a flag. We were always going to have a 2 or so year hiatus from being a serious contender once Cox, Glass, Butler, A Selwood, Embley, Kerr and co started to slow down. I think it's just happened a year earlier than people were thinking.

Perhaps people were also thinking our youngins would take over the reigns quicker than they have and that there wouldnt be a drop off period.

IMO we use this 2 year hiatus from seriously challenging to pick up draftees and target 20 to 25yr old players to sure up our team and extend our next window. Picking up a 29yr old who looks to be slowing down for a 24 (?) year old who has shown he is still improving when he gets continuity and could hold down the 2nd key back spot for next 6+ years would be a badddd choice

Brown is likely going to leave. Also Saints are still interested.

Yeah Dal for Brown would be fair imo but would be too expensive for little reward, would rather take a chance with a youngster. Dal should remain a one club player unless he gets an offer to good to refuse.

Agree with most of this post, however think we are a genuine chance next year if we get all our key players right over the pre-season. While using injuries is a cop out we're had Nic under done and often missing our top mids. From the game against Freo we missed arguably 4 of our best 6 mids plus Bunga and Waters. Glass, Kerr and Cox could still add to the team next year.

In 2 years I think GCS will have a mortgage on the flag.. a midfield of GAJ, JOM, Jack, Swallow, Bennell is the stuff nightmares are made of. We need to try and jag one in the next couple of years (not Crazy Vossy style).

If Brown leaves I would much rather pick up a youngish KPD with the pick we get for him than use it on a player that may have 1 or 2 good years left while we wont be contending

IMO I think Brown will stay. He said he was happy in perth and at WC but he just wanted to play footy. He's played most games this year and has done really well. Glass will only slow down so I see him playing a lot more frequently for the remainder of this year and into next

I'm not sure if I'd prefer a 2nd round pick or NDS tbh... Probably a second rounder given how deep the draft appears to be from a midfielder perspective. Although if we lose Brown, we ideally need to recruit someone who is ready to step in as a KPD when required.

Problem is i think had hoped to rest Cox more often but Nic Nat is still struggling with injury and i think we will see one rest one week and one the next in the 2 games after Sydney.

I say we Bring in Lycett next week and rest Nic Nat and the week after rest Cox and bring Nic Nat back and if worse case bring in Sinclair.

The problem with that is Cox, Kerr, Glass (2nd half of the season imo), Embley, Butler and A Selwood are dropping off fairly quickly. Another pre season into them and they'll be contributing even less than this year imo.

I think our young mids need another 2 years before they can bridge the gap that will be left by the retirements and lessening contribution from our older players. That, and we have some holes to fill that may become even more apparent when we can no longer carry our older players ie 2nd ruckman, can Lycett lift his game? 2nd/3rd back, can Brown and Schoefield take up the slack once Glass retires or is no longer best 22? Can Brennan, Wilson, Carter and Smith replace Butler, A Selwood and possibly Waters if he cant stay fit

If the risk is greater than the reward do you agree with it if it goes that way?
I don't know enough about either the Newman situation or the Garlett situation to know what the risk/reward scenario is. I'm just speculating that Murray's problems may scare the club off taking a punt on another question mark in Garlett.

I hope it doesn't, I'd love for Garlett to be a third rounder for us. ;)
