Off topic, but "as a photographer" can you recommend me a decent DSLR? I was looking at:

- Canon 60D versus Nikon D5200
- Canon 70D versus Nikon D7100

Iv'e been reading alot of reviews and opinions on the internet and they all seem to be all over the place. As a photographer in your experience which ones would you recommend. It seems to me that the benefit of a Canon over a Nikon for a begginer may be the relative ease of use. Is this assumption correct?

It's a question of personal preference. Both my daughter and her partner are photographers. She has Nikons and he has Canons, and both swear by them.

Good luck on your investment.

Maginess is quick, which is exactly what we need after taking the slowest player in the draft Dom Sheed to add to the worst and slowest midfield probably ever in the AFL.

You seem a bit too pessimistic in your assessment. Sheeds ain't the fastest bloke around but he ain't the slowest either.

RE - Macginnis? Any thoughts?

He has good run and carry is surprising good over head for a average sized mid.
His pace is good and so is his decision making, the reason he went in the rookie is concerns on his kicking.
There is thought that his kicking will get better by him getting stronger in the gym.
He will start to punch his kicks instead of looping them so much.
He is a good option, and will stand out in the wafl with his run and carry.
If he can improve his kicking we could have a player on our hands, his decision making
is generally very good.

One thing I thought watching him is that he will be a very good WAFL/VFL player at the very worst. Looks to be a very well rounded player who gets the most out of himself. I think he has reasonable scope to improve so hopefully he can find his niche at AFL level.

Well watching the brief highlights of Maginess is he looks like he thinks before he kicks, nearly all of those kicks found a target and he didn't just blaze away kicking around corners, he looked, lowered the eyes and passed the ball by foot to advantage.

Wonder why he slid into the rookie draft?

That was exactly what I thought. ;)

Looks like we've covered a lot of bases in our recruiting which is good to see. A good mix of mids (inside and out), some decent speed too, good kicking, and forward planning by getting in some key defender prospects.

Happy all up on paper with what we've done, now we just have to wait and see how the development plays out.

That's all you can really hope for at this stage.

No you can hope that they all turn out to be jets. Doesn't mean it will happen but I'm still going to hope for it

Happy with our draft and trade period. Excited to see how Sheed and Yeo go next year, with Ellis the potential ace in the hole if he can get his body right. With the retirement of some of the elder statesman, it really is time for the younger brigade to step up and make their own destiny. I think the biggest acquisition this year is Simpson. If he finds the right game plan for the cattle, I think this group is capable of big things. Whether we see significant improvement in ladder position next year will remain to be seen, but I hope for significant improvement in how we play the game and our competitiveness against the top teams.

i dont think we are a side with slow midfielders, i think it was the gameplan that we chose to play that made us slow.
if we stand on top of each other trying to handball out of traffic, we're going to be perceived as a slow team.

those time that nic nat rucked it down to scooter who'd find a nice pass 30m out,
we look super quick.

as important as midfield pace can be i think it can be slightly overrated at times compared to footy smarts,
a midfielder generally only needs to run hard from half back to the forward 50.

id take a guy whos smart enough to get out of traffic than a guy who purely just has the leg speed to do it

Exactly.

Ash Smith has pace.

And the inability to do anything else remotely positively.

yes please!!-after the last few years of great expectations and few changes under woosha, to at least see a new gameplan, or to view anything that is noticibly different this season will be a sheer delight..with new players peppered thru the list, and what they bring to the game, and how they link up, along with the head honcho and his plan, promises arguably to be one of the most awaited, intriguing, and possibly exciting starts to any season weve had.

No real benefits going either Canon or Nikon.
Canon lenses in general cost more but I think Sigma and Tamron are making good enough lenses at a much more competitive price anyway.
The camera you go for depends on what you want to be doing.
If you are wanting sports then the 70D is a fine option.
If you are wanting to do more landscapes and portraiture then 5D mkII would be a better choice.
It is also better IMO at video (though I can't speak emphatically about the changes in the 70D).
Anyway, the real decisions come down to lens, and again, it depends on what you want to shoot.
Like I said Sigma make some really good lenses now - 35mm, 24-70mm, 120-300mm.
If you've got money to burn then my favourite lenses are Zeiss but they will cost you between $1500-2500 (which still isn't much).
