Agree TFS

In 2011 when we played the midfield press we looked like and played like a top 4 team - great ball movement, great skills - which made us looked good and quick.

In 2012 & 2013 we played like crap and looked slow as a result.

The good thing about Masten, Selwood, Shuey, Naitanui, Sheed - is that they all have sub 3.00sec 20m sprint times and they are quick over the first few steps - which is exactly what you need from clearance players. They are definitely not slow and will look much better with better clearance work, better skills and ball movement.

In 2011 we had stellar years from Nicoski, Kerr & Embley who all were quick. One played inside and is super creative; one played all over the place from forward of centre to the goal square and was quick and the other added enormous outside run and line breaking run from half back forwards ...

That's additional speed/run and creativity across all the lines ....

What Hawthorn and Freo have is quick, line breaking players sprinkled through the side who inject pace when needed. Freo have Hill, Pearce, Ballantyne .... Hawks went out of their way to promote and play Hill before he was ready and they have Rioli and others ...

Shuey is decent but not electric quick and we have one paced defenders, one paced mids (our outside mids aren't quick) and one paced forwards ...

It's not just ball movement, we lack the sort of electric quick line breakers that can create or score those easy break away goals that are so damaging in current style of footy...

We have got a few decent speed mids, non plodders, but I doubt there is anyone that terrifies other teams in a metre of space goal side... those other sides have guys that kill you from that position...

We could use dangerous pace across the ground. That could be via a half forward who rotates mid or it could be via quick outside players who start defensive side of contests (Hill & Pearce at Freo)...

The notion that pure speed isn't something we lack is nonsense. But we don't need everyone to have it, just an injection across the team ...

Ball movement is an issue in part because our primary inside mid is both slow of body and mind when it comes to creative/offensive ball use ... but hey let's not go there :)

I give you Hill (both of them) - but Pearce plays back flank and I wouldn't have him as quick as Shuey. Just because he is soft and outside, doesn't make him all that quick. Ballantyne plays forward and has pace but rarely impacts the midfield.

In terms of goalside I think there are three in our side who would gain the focus - Wellingham, Shuey and Naitanui. I don't doubt that it would be nice to have Peter Matera roaming up the wing - but if it was a choice between Matt Priddis and James Walker - I'm going with Priddis.

I look at the great mids in the comp - and how many have genuine pace? Dangerfield and..... The rest have great spatial awareness, strength over the ball and creative use of the footy. I'd be far more inclined to fix that hole in our side before worrying about pace.

Unlike you to miss the point TFS (where's the roll eyes emoticon) :p

As I said, and have said repeatedly, we need an injection of pace across the ground. This notion that a guy plays at half back and therefore doesn't impact the midfield is so 1980's as to be beneath you. It's dumb.

It's like saying Rioli's pace has no impact on Hawthorns midfield cos he's primarily a forward pocket. It's nonsense.

Our mids are of adequate physical speed but they have no quick players outside them; none to break to space and none running in support from the back half. Because we lack pace.

Add to that that our midfield black hole is both slow of body and of mind and hasn't got a creative skill in him (see D Kerr for the opposite) and you have a bunch of in close modest runners supported by outside modest paced runners with overlap from modest paced runners kicking to modest paced runners.

It's not that they are all individually slow, it's that we as a team have very very little genuine explosive speed anywhere ...

Teams like Freo have inserted speed in various positions across the ground because speed to create space creates those few easier opportunities a game that we struggle to create.

Denying Pearces value to Freo because he's softish is just pigheaded "old school" bollocks.

Our team would be way better with a Pearce than a Rosa or any of our plethora of modest paced "half backs" ... not because individually they can't play but because collectively we have little explosive pace ...

I am sorry i ever doubted Vozzo and co. We got Sheed and so much more thanks to the wonderful job they have done.

Dom Sheed.... Captain of W.A.
Tom Barrass.... Captain of Claremont.
Will Maginness.... Co Captain of Oakleigh Chargers.

Dom Sheed..... Larke medalist
Malcolm Karpany.....Alan Stewart Medal
Tom Barrass .....played brilliantly in Colts GF, particularly second half.

That's a lot of quality big game players and leadership qualities to inject into your club in one draft period.

Bloody awesome, i am so stoked with the quality of players we have snatched.

Add Yeo and maybe Ellis to the mix and we have done exceptionally well.

Perhaps our best trade/draft period for some time.

Main and Powell i don't know so much about but they are both tall and fill needs.

Plus the club is posting videos and articles at such an outstanding rate that i can't help but be swept up in nothing but optimism for next year and beyond.

The critics call it a C+ period for us.

I feel it's easily an A.

Only time will tell but like i said i feel very optimistic once more in regards to our future. :)

Credentials is one thing, Performance is another. Can't wait to see how they come on over the few years!

No doubt.

However i still like what i see and knowing that these kids have had some experience to date in

A) Leadership and setting an example
B) Standing up when something is on the line.

Good qualities to have.

Fair point. Could be some Cale Morton's, Steven Armstrongs etc amongst the group. It's exciting ...

i dont think we are a side with slow midfielders, i think it was the gameplan that we chose to play that made us slow.
if we stand on top of each other trying to handball out of traffic, we're going to be perceived as a slow team.

those time that nic nat rucked it down to scooter who'd find a nice pass 30m out,
we look super quick.

as important as midfield pace can be i think it can be slightly overrated at times compared to footy smarts,
a midfielder generally only needs to run hard from half back to the forward 50.

id take a guy whos smart enough to get out of traffic than a guy who purely just has the leg speed to do it
