Well if they know we can't bluff then we're sunk.
I believe we put our hand up for McDonald because we would've taken him were he available.
I don't know how often clubs nominate a player with no desire to take him with their pick, and I suspect those teams placed 1-6 would not wish to take Waterman with their first pick.
If we took McDonald then that would have assumed that we werent after Sheed. Its possible that we bid on McDonald to prevent them taking Sheed. All that is based on the idea that we were after Sheed the whole time and simply preventing other clubs picking him through a Vozzo-esque web of bluffing and gambits.

We are banking on 1-6/7 not bidding on Waterman and then picking him up with #28ish. Im big on trading for another first because there are some good midfielders to be had in this draft who could possibly help us get back into contention for finals and beyond. There are some guys on the list who are not getting games who have currency, namely Sinclair. If we trade out one of our midfielders to try and sweeten the deal (Masten, Selwood, Priddis:p) then we may end up getting ourselves some more picks to capitalise this year and begin a rebuild of sorts.

This thread is full of observations of people who should be traded out, delisted or retire. There are lots of names on this list, link that to the observation that we havent been good at turning over our list for the last 5 years, then we need to start that resurgence now. Drafting is the basis of list building, and mated with savvy trading to facilitate that, we can go back to the basics to get us back on top.

Not the signing - which has no effect on anyone else - the quote - about McGovern being our best forward.
I'd say over the month McGovern has easily been our best performing forward.

I also did the ladder predictor and mathematically we can still come last (only need a few upsets from the lower clubs).

Send in the tanks!!! :)

Does he really have currency?
I'd be surprised if we could net a 4th rounder with him alone.

Mitchell's father works for Swans so I doubt they would give up two salaries.
With Rohan if Sydney can't get anything out of him with their development department we as sure as he'll won't.
Didn't say it would be easy but Mitchell is clearly very talented and has more tricks than Rohan and is languishing in the NEAFL.

I don't think there is a lot wrong with Rohan, I think he's still finding fitness after his injury and perhaps doesn't fit so well structurally.
Same goes for Mitchell, where neither are good enough to play through the mids and neither are standing out as a permanent small fwd.

Rohan is way better than any small forward we have IMO - so if we get him cheap, I think it's worth a shot.

What do you classify as "cheap"?

It's also possible that we bid on McDonald with pick 6 because we genuinely ranked him as a top-6 pick, and after North matched our bid we turned our attention to Sheed.

Fourth rounder or Rookie?
Not sure we should give up our third.

I seriously doubt that we would let that happen, but we could Ebert them in return.
Subi Oval would be in flames if we knocked back a F/S like Waterman. We have no bargaining power.
We haven't come out like others (North) and stated that we are taking him and have him training with the club already, so it is not a monty that we will pick him up. That is our bargaining power. If we had done that then it would be more likely a club would bid. He is not rated as highly as McDonald though and not a top 10 so clubs below would be idiotic to bid.

Ruckmen have lately attracted a bit more in value - I think he's worth a third. Combine Selwood and you could net a first rounder from a Victorian club.

Thats is possible too, good point. Lately we have favoured WA midfielders, although you could be right.

Another good point. Sheed trained with us didn't he, but im not sure when last year? That gave away our intentions so its possible we have learnt from last year. I would say that Waterman may not be training with us yet because the U18's is still on and the combine hasnt started yet.

Training with us because of the AIS allocations didn't really "give away our intentions".

He trained with us through the AIS program.

EDIT: Beaten to it. By fifteen minutes. Need to learn to refresh.

Rohen is a very good player coming of an injury - with great pace and skill. Sydney just pave plenty - we dont
