So would I but Mitchell would be very hard to acquire I would have thought.

I'd really love to see the club be proactive and aggressive at the trade table this year.
We have been more aggressive the last few years. Wellingham, Ellis, Yeo, Bennell, Cripps, Hill, Tunbridge are all players we have traded for or picked up from other clubs through free agency.

I hear what you're saying but I can't help but think they could do more.

Hill was scraps, probably Ellis too.
Cripps, Tunbridge, Yeo all nominated us and we paid too much for Wellingham.

Ellis, Yeo and Bennell are all good pick ups, two of them good role players and the other a potential gun.

I just feel like we need to be super aggressive to land that big fish, trade off players if required for team balance.
I'd like to see us get at least another 2nd round pick if not higher.

Look at other players we could bring in that aren't midfielders but could free up someone like Hurn to play further up the ground or in midfield.
An attacking HB with a great kick would be nice.

Father son Bidding is done before the trade period right. I see this as a major factor on how aggressive we should be with our trades.

If someone bids on Waterman and he is gonna cost us our first we need to be a lot more aggressive getting more picks/players to fill needs.

If we can get Waterman with our second rounder and hence will get another good midfielder with our first selection we can afford to be less aggressive and hope to build through the draft rather than trading away too much for prospects.

Having said that we could definitely use some team balance trades as suggested earlier.

What Im worried about it those three clubs bidding on Waterman to make us use our first. Im really keen on getting another first rounder through trades as insurance.
Waterman isn't rated that highly if they do bid then We let them take him and get a better player. Would suck if they did but they won't.

1) Waterman highly unlikely to go in top 10. Plenty of really good talls available & teams like SK, Bris, WB, Carlton, Rich are all crying out for talls.
2) No certainty that WC finish above a couple of teams currently below them - Rich & Carlton should both be a game behind WC at end this week & both have winnable games ahead.
3) Should Petracca &/or Brayshaw go top 5, it will leave players like Wright, Durdin, McCartin, Goddard & Lever available. These 5 are serious players & well worth a top 10 pick. Lever in particular will likely make the transition into the midfield going fwd

It's ridiculous that there isn't draft day trading and trading after the draft!
Yep, as a fan of American sports our system seems almost quaint.

I understand why you can't have players moving about all over the place when they have part time jobs as brickies ala 1990 but nowadays a more flexible dynamic system of player movement should be available ...

It's been raised before that our system also mitigates against the best possible product.

Port are heading into a finals series in which ruck could be a real problem given their injury/inexperience issues. There are guys at SANFL/WAFL level who would be better than their options if Lobbe pulls a hammy. Why is there no free agent system or injury list system? How would it be a bad thing?

We sort of leave in this quaint semi-pro system that seems half arsed at times

good god. put me in port midfield and id look good too.
Mitchell looks / sounds like a Priddis but with pace. Gets plenty of it but question marks over kicking efficiency. But with pace you can chase, run down opponents and apply defensive pressure as well as be a running link player by hand.

As for kicking how do you rate Dane Swans disposal by foot BTW? At times Swan kicks like a donkey but can be very effective.

I wouldn't be knocking mids who have the tools to get plenty of the ball, who have good pace and endurance. Especially with this modern style of every player moving up and down the field leaving half the field open and free.

Surely we're the the kind of situation now where first pick has to be partly needs based - ie, a mid. The possiblity of those former two going top 5 simply makes finishing low this year a must for me. Let's not repeat 2009.

We're sitting on 6 wins. With at least another home game against the Dees to come.

Surely we couldn't finish bottom 5 even if we tried?
