How far up are you talking ?
Finishing 8th or 9th.

At a best case we could end up as high as 6th if we win our first final IMO. So that a pick possibly in the 10 - 13 range?

If the best available mid at that pick is a 180cm all rounder/inside mid, i'd rather we looked at something else in the draft.

Considering Waterman will be a likely choice for our 2nd pick in a similar role.

Haven't looked at the latest mock drafts, but recall someone like Goddard might be who you are talking about?
Yes, someone like Goddard. Originally, when we were in contention for Laverde, Petracca or Brayshaw, Goddard wouldn't have crossed my mind.

But now, with these last few wins changing our draft possibility's, i'm thinking it's better looking outside of the midfield group, unless there is a standout slider.

If we've moved too far up the ladder to get a very good midfielder, i'd prefer if we looked into picking whatever KPP has slid. If there is one.

If it comes down to another vanilla midfielder or a gun backman, i'd take the backman. Avoid vanilla at all costs please.

We can still 'attempt' to address our midfield problems with future trading or the rookie/PS drafts.
Someone like Lever should still be around our pick. Potentially a big bodied mid in the future.

He's up at 194cm these days so that might be a stretch.
Out of curiosity, how tall has Bontempelli (sp?) ended up? I remember he shot up during his draft year and people were worried he was going to end up a tweener. He's been crushing it this year, although he'd probably dominate at 160cm or 210cm, athletic freak.

What do the teams ahead of us (assuming we finish roughly where we are - not getting into a debate about finals), actually need?

That list looks heavy on KPPs, so might some of the mids (which is what we need) slide?

4. Isaac Heeney - 186cm - mid - Sydney Acadamey Pick
5. Angus Brayshaw - 187cm - mid GWS/Melbourne
6. Darcy Moore - 199cm - tall defender/forward - Pies F/S - be good if can overtake them as no impact on us.

As stated on a number of occasions I am a watcher (not studier) of the game.

My thoughts based on current ladder positions.

St Kilda - key forwards
Giants - mid/key defenders
Melbourne - mids/defenders
Lions - key forward
Bulldogs - key forward
Carlton - big men or quick mids
Richmond - key forward to complement Jack
WCE - mids
Gold Coast - key forward
Collingwood - key forward to complement Cloke.

Some of these issues may be resolved with trading in of players.

N.B. of the list it is widely suggested Collingwood will take Moore (F/S pick) and Sydney Heeney (Academy pick)

IMO Cale's will always go above Sam Mitchell's. Short guys with good foot skills will be drafted later than tall athletic types with the potential to be anything.
Lots of guys playing AFL who are 6 foot and can run, not many who are 5'6 and slow'ish. Sam Mitchell is an exception, but don't like the odds of finding too many like him.

When the skill level is close - sure go the athletic, tall, big bodied mid. It makes sense.

I also understand at draft time it isn't an exact science.

HOwever if we simply go in with blinkers saying "We need to get bigger" than that means we could potentially be turning off from a great midfielder.

If thats roughly the order people get taken i would be very happy with Laverde, durdin or to a lesser extent pickett.
