*cough*

Hawthorn have traded in

Lake
Gibson
Burgoyne
Hale
Gunston
McEvoy

Sydney have traded in

Mcglynn
Richards
Kennedy
Shaw
Franklin
Tippett

Considering between them they have appeared in the last three Grand Finals for 3 premierships i'd say they seem to be proving a point.

I will concede that their youth improving was still a huge factor in all of it.
Yes, these are more than usual. But 5 or so best 22 players is not generally the backbone of a team.

For instance if you look at the dominant Geelong team from 2007 onwards you really only have Mooney, Harley and Ottens who have come from other clubs and only really Ottens who was an already established player.

True.

Hawthorn and Sydney have also shown a propensity to develop late draft picks into guns. Smith and Hill and Hannebery and Parker for example.

It can't be denied it gives a huge jump start to competing at the top again.

Time for Shuey, Sheed, Yeo, Waterman and co to pull a finger out. ;)

I think people need to forget their preconceptions of trading and drafting with the advent of free agency. We have the basis of a challenging side. We really need another 4 rotations for the middle with 1 of them being an elite level player at least. Just say for example. Say we trade pick 10 and a player for coniglio this year, draft waterman and touk miller and then next year throw a 6 year 6mill deal at dangerfield or something similar at cotchin. You take the rest of our team, we won't be losing anyone of real import in that time and all of a sudden you have a team ready to challenge for a premiership. Pick up say garlett for scraps this year etc.

We really are only 2-3 players off being a challenging side. I would put money on shuey to step it up further next year and think gaff will improve significantly again. All of a sudden say 2 years from now you have nicnat tapping it down to coniglio, shuey, cotchin with scooter as the defensive mid. Would be the best starting midfield in the league and kicking to a top 3 forward line in the league and with a top 3 defense to protect them. We really aren't far away. Shit even just adding coniglio with improvement to shuey, gaff, yeo and the re-introduction of scooter and you have a bloody good midfield.

Burbury sounds a little like Bedford (name-wise, not player-wise)
And last time we overlooked Garlett for Bedford, perhaps we want another shot at the Geelong scrap heap instead of Jeffy once again. I'd say we've gone cold on Garlett to hose down his value.. Come trade day its out Adam Carter, in Jeff Garlett.

Agree if we added Coniglio and Dangerfield over the next year we would be a legit competitor but its easier said that done. Coniglio we could get pretty easily but we would still be lacking that superstar, dangerfield would be almost impossible to get.

Damn ... Connor McKenna has signed on with the dons - kok, bad advice there, i reckon, with all the shit hanging over their heads. Was hoping he would come to us as he fills our needs.
Oh well!

Shuey will step it up a level and add coniglio and that's 2 potential a grade mids plus improvement of yeo, shred, gaff amongst others. If our mids break even or close to top level opposition our forward line, defence and ruck divisions are top 3 in the league.
