Have we ever actually initiated a trade for a big-name player? IIRC, Stenglein, Chick, Wellingham, Yeo... all basically flagged their desire to go home and THEN we managed to convince them to pick the Eagles.
Who knows what goes on behind closed doors.

Oh wow, blow my mind. Some first-year arts students just called. They want their talking points back.

A better result, in my view, would have been adding to the list with a player or two who's ready to go.

Is it a choice between getting one of those guys and getting no one?

Are you saying there's no middle ground?
We all would have liked to have had a quality player brought in during the trade period at a low cost like we did Yeo with Yeo last year or the elite mid we are crying out for.

From the sound of it we made reasonable offers to Malceski and Varcoe. There was talk around Conca and Christensen but nothing substantial. Its entirely plausible that after those names there wasn't much on offer or that the asking price was too high.

Malceski took a $1.5m deal over three years
Varcoe would have cost our 2nd round draft pick or someone like Schofield. We reportedly offered him $1.2m over 3 years
Conca would have likely required our 1st round pick
Christensen had eyes only on Queensland for whatever reason.

Any of those we should have gone harder for?

Beams, Boyd and Griffen we didn't have the trade currency for not withstanding they had chosen their destinations. Ryder didn't fill a need.

The quality WA mids elsewhere are still under contract and there is no way of us knowing whether we are in those guys (or their managers) ears already which may very well be the case

But just because nothing transpired it means the club sat around on their hands for 2 weeks and did nothing

Pickett might still get to 11 - Hasn't he been saying that he wants to stay in WA?

Regardless there will be plenty of talent at 11 to choose from.

Maybe Geelong want Cockatoo?

Can someone do a Photoshop of a leave request by Adam Simpson starting from the day Free Agency started to today (approved by Nisbett) so I can email it to my mates for a laugh? Clearly he and the other list management staff have gone on holiday.

I wouldn't be devastated if we take Cockatoo at 11 if the other popular options are gone (Pickett, Weller, etc).

With Geelong likely to go a mid, look forward to us taking a quality tall that has slid.

The epic meltdown on our board and that of the purple passionate's would be well worth it!

Especially the latter, it would be delicious.

Hopefully Wells falls in love with his athleticism and reaches for him like he did with Billie Smedts.

Thank Christ for that as well

We also initiated contact with Chris Tarrant before Freo trumped us with that as well, another bullet dodged!

Indeed. Or even someone less well-regarded.

You reckon Conca would have commanded a first-rounder?

If we tapped him up properly, surely we could have pushed through a trade for a player and our second-rounder?

We should be aggressively looking for a reverse Ebert every season.

Beams, Boyd and Griffen we didn't have the trade currency for not withstanding they had chosen their destinations. Ryder didn't fill a need.
Agreed.

When I say 'we did nothing', I'm talking about the result. I don't think our list managers literally sat at home the whole time.

I would also have been open to packaging players with picks and looking for upgrades. If we can't get the readymade midfielder, then let's double down on the draft. That would also be acceptable. Instead, we've just ended up treading water.

I'm talking about the trades that actually happen. How many of them are actually initiated by us? That is, where we identify a target and then successfully snare them? I'm not raising this as a criticism... just putting it forward as an observation. A lot of people are frustrated by our lack of trade activity, but for better or worse, it just doesn't seem to be our MO.

Carter, Wilson, Tunbridge
So by my reading we currently have 4 players out and 2 players in to the main list:

OUT: Glass, Cox, Smith, Brennan
IN: Sinclair, Waterman

That leaves us 2 draft picks unless we cut more players. At least one more player gets cut - I think Wilson is gone and Carter is a chance too. I think Tunbridge stays one more year but he could be cut too. So cut Wilson and Carter and rookie list one of them. That would give us 4 draft picks or 3 if we think Lucas is better than a late draft pick, which I think he is.

So why read them?

No one is forcing you.
you're the guy talking loud on his mobile on the train.
everyone else needs to use the train to get home so needs to put up with it.
they try eyeball you but you just dont care.
you think everyone likes the sound of your own voice as much as you do.

No real argument with any of that but I'm making allowance for the possibility that all of the above was tried and nothing of any substance presented itself. I don't like that after finishing 9th we are apparently treading water but I'd rather that than do a trade purely for the sake of trading.

It's also possible that we aren't aggressive enough so don't contemplate deals like the Saints trading Stanley for pick 21.

Conca is under contract so while I don't think he would have been worth our 1st rounder its quite likely Richmond would have asked for it - he only real came into discussion when it looked like Richmond were going to trade for Trengove and there was more at play that a straight trade for Conca

That's a ridiculous analogy.

You are perfectly free not to read my posts. Certainly, no one is forcing you to actually respond to them.

So stop whining like a little kid. It's obvious you just want my attention.
