I'm talking about the trades that actually happen. How many of them are actually initiated by us? That is, where we identify a target and then successfully snare them? I'm not raising this as a criticism... just putting it forward as an observation. A lot of people are frustrated by our lack of trade activity, but for better or worse, it just doesn't seem to be our MO.
Well which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Did Yeo, Cripps, Wellingham, Stenglein, Chick etc come home because they were homesick or because we were in their ear beforehand about moving to West Coast? No one really knows as we aren't privy to that inner sanctum

That's a ridiculous analogy.

You are perfectly free not to read my posts. Certainly, no one is forcing you to actually respond to them.

So stop whining like a little kid. It's obvious you just want my attention.
do you always feel the need to give your (mainly negative) views on absolutely everything, everyone and every topic?
ever thought of maybe buying a diary or something instead?...

No real argument with any of that but I'm making allowance for the possibility that all of the above was tried and nothing of any substance presented itself.
Maybe we should hustle harder.

I don't like that after finishing 9th we are apparently treading water but I'd rather that than do a trade purely for the sake of trading.
Of course. But we just don't seem to be very adept at finding value and cherry-picking players.

It's also possible that we aren't aggressive enough so don't contemplate deals like the Saints trading Stanley for pick 21.
What about Geelong jumping into the top 10 in return for a downgrade lower down? Why don't we do stuff like that?

Conca is under contract so while I don't think he would have been worth our 1st rounder its quite likely Richmond would have asked for it - he only real came into discussion when it looked like Richmond were going to trade for Trengove and there was more at play that a straight trade for Conca
Sure. They were under no pressure to trade.

We have a pretty good track record of retaining players. Certainly we don't often have other clubs actively poaching our players.

May or may not be linked to the impression that we don't chase players at other clubs

Kennedy count?
Even though he was a whipping boy of mine, Peter Wilson went alright for us.
Kennedy doesn't really count, was unusual circumstances and we got the best we could for one of the best players of all time. Has been win/win though.

Chick and Stenglein fulfilled their roles and played in a premiership but really they had minimal careers at WCE for the price we paid for them.

He's out of the 2008 draft class and played 66 games but has been hampered by injuries .Worth a rookie spot I think .
a quick look at his twitter page and it seems he is more interested in golf these days than footy... and he is allergic to peanuts but loves cashews. haha sounds like such a nerd. I agree though if we could get him as a rookie he could be handy. If you compare him to Ellis who also suffered a lot of injuries and had a great season with us. yeah why not

So by my reading we currently have 4 players out and 2 players in to the main list:

OUT: Glass, Cox, Smith, Brennan
IN: Sinclair, Waterman

That leaves us 2 draft picks unless we cut more players. At least one more player gets cut - I think Wilson is gone and Carter is a chance too. I think Tunbridge stays one more year but he could be cut too. So cut Wilson and Carter and rookie list one of them. That would give us 4 draft picks or 3 if we think Lucas is better than a late draft pick, which I think he is.
Time to rearrange the deckchairs

Can keep Wilson, Carter and/or Tunbridge or

Use pick 51 in the draft if we delist one of them
Use pick 69 in the draft or take a DFA (Lucas the most likely) if we delist 2
Pick seven thousand or a second DFA if we delist all three (Could also promote Maginness or Newman from the rookie list and open up a second rookie list spot but that seems unnecessary/premature)

Hopefully we cut Wilson and carter loose whilst getting Tunbridge the one year contract I believe he's been offered without conceding the two year deal he has apparently asked for.

Use our third round pick and go after a DFA - I'd be happy to give Lucas a second chance.

Either rookie list Carter with the spot we have available there or get a project ruck like we did with Sinclair (or better still like Cox)

Stenglein I believe was being talked up as a future Adelaide Captain at the point we pinched him too.
He was talked up as a future captain indeed

Chick and Stenglein fulfilled their roles and played in a premiership but really they had minimal careers at WCE for the price we paid for them.
The price we paid was well worth it for this alone

Minimal carre's, but did the exact job they were recruited for. Both were pretty important players for us through the mid 2000's.

I still get a funny feeling we end up with Clem Smith. I suspect we've got in his ear and he's done a brilliant tank job this season. How does a g uy playing WAFL level have a beep test in the 12's?
Knowing the kid, I'm not surprised by a 12 in the beep. But doesn't stop him from being super talented. I have seen plenty of him. I have not seen many like him. Crazy crazy talent. I wouldn't be disappointed in picking him to be honest, a high-ceiling pick.
