A few people here feel he's not worth pick 11, so we'll have to wait and see. I will be mighty pissed if Geelong takes him one pick before us and Weller is also gone.

We both have similar needs.

Like Geelong we have great KPPs and a Brownlow winning inside midfielder.

I thought Varcoe would be a good fit you guys in that regard. He was played out of position for us over the last few years (in which he has carried injuries). He is best as an outside mid or in an old-school wing role, not rebounding defender. But there wasn't a great deal your club could do there, as he wanted to stay in Vic and I'm not sure what kind of trade could have been done anyway.

Yeah. Pretty hard to lure players westward unless they grew up here it seems.

sick of this homesickness factor bullshit. Homesickness is when you go from a town of 600 to boarding school in the city at 12 years of age. and you get over it after about 2 months because you are with your mates and you can see your folks every month or so. Homesickness is not moving out of home at 18 to earn the big bucks and follow your dreams of playing AFL. Thats just being a pussy and looking for an easy out.

Spoken from experience, having both gone to boarding school at 12 and moved to the other side of the country to pursue my sporting dreams not long after finishing school

So every single person is exactly like you? Don't be a dick just because you think you're more hardcore than they are.

Some on our board are very keen on him, and his write ups by those in the industry are very good. But from what I read he is being marked as a mid second rounder. If available with our pick 35, then a chance to make the hoops. But probably will not be available then. Think Wells will be looking for more with p10.

Agree though I'm from a boarding school background too. Done a fair bit of international site work and you'd surprised how many people struggle out of their comfort zone and can't hack it.

Still, given the investment GWS had made it was surprising they didn't try to move the family across, even for a little while...

Fair enough. Although a player of his class I dont see lasting past the first round.

no, not everyone is like me (thank the world for that). its just an overused excuse. you gotta grow up sometime
Kind of agree - I took a year off overseas after high school and I've spent the last 5 years in the US (straight after finishing my degree). I don't regret it and I'm in no rush to return but at the same time I probably will do so eventually.

That said, if one of my parents was sick that would change everything, so I have a fair amount of empathy for Beams (and as for him electing Brisbane, money certainly matters when it comes to medical bills as well).

You may be right.

If interested, and if you haven't already had a look, check out Knightmare's Phantom Draft on the Drafts, Tarding, and Free Agents Board. Very good summary of each player up for the draft, and generally on the money. I assume he is involved in the industry. :thumbsu:

Your pick 35 is now pick 47

It was the other side of you traded up from 14 to 10

We end up winning a few nothing games at the end of the season and Melbourne get a compo pick and all of a sudden all of those guys will be gone before we enter the draft.

Now to me looking at the desperate state of our midfield we have to do something to upgrade our 1st round pick and grab one of those players. Melbourne won't let Petracca get past them fair enough, but the other two were realistic options for us if we moved up the order. But we did nothing.
Melbourne won't let Brayshaw get past them either.

So given those two mids will be taken in the top 3, and presuming Laverde is as outstanding a prospect as you think he is, what do we do to secure him?

What pick did we need to trade for in order to get Laverde?

4? 7?

Who did we fail to trade to GWS in order to get one of those picks?

Brown and pick 32 for 7?

Gaff for 4?

McGovern and pick 11 for pick 6?

I understand the frustration of this potentially being 2009 all over again, but besides turning back the clock and tanking against GCS, what would you have done better to get your hands on one of those three midfielders?

I don't even know where to start... I doubt repeating myself would help... ok.

the whole deal revolves around Tom Boyd. If Tom Boyd is as good as Tomahawk this will have been an abject failure. He will have to be as good as Buddy or Jonno Brown for this to be deemed a success. And he has to be that good within the next 2 years. He is on superstar money, money only a dozen players in the game are on. He cost an AA player in his prime plus pick 6.
Ok mate, you keep your pick #6 and a 28yr old midfielder who didn't want to be there and Ill take the 10+ year's of arguably the best young key forward going around who was the clear #1 pick last year.

Who cares how much money he is on? how does that even matter? If they have the cash available right now who cares if they spend it. Your cap doesn't roll over into next years budget... they haven't mortgaged there future like Sydney it's only a 4 year contract.
