Subtle dig.

There is nothing intangible about Judd's former ability to burst from congestion with acceleration, or Ablett's ability to weave through congestion with unmatched lateral movement, composure and vision.

Sounds entirely tangible and defineable to me.

Judd's breakaways were remarkable and there was an intangible element in the sense that if you lined him up with a whole lot of other players and measured burst speed he likely would be level with a lot of others but in a game his bursts stood out because of when, how and where he did them... you can measure speed but when you watched Judd in games it was much much more than his 20m dash speed...

And how do you propose we measure GAbletts amazing ability to weave? Are you suggesting that a simple sum of his agility x peripheral vision x whatever else makes it measurable and therefore we can compare it to others?

The reality is when GC had a surprise win earlier this year GAblett took over when his team needed him to; he dominated the ball and he got the ball in "impossible" spots and kicked a couple of goals where everyone who has watched him knew he would despite the degree of difficulty. The big moment; the high degree of difficulty were no obstacle and in fact inspired him AND we all knew it would because the great ones have moments like that where they are above the game ....

You can't measure that. You can observe and describe it after the fact. But you can't put 2 players through their paces in a vacuum and measure it ...

Aish has those traits. He steps up in the big moments and his skills are, at times, otherworldly. By comparison Sheed looks a very good, very effective footballer.

Unless it's your argument that there are no intangibles. That everything is measurable ...

I don't mind the idea of compensation picks but they are meant to be way under the value of the player. Once again, the AFL have taken an idea from the NFL and completely mucked it up. In the NFL, the highest compensation pick is at the end of the 3rd round. Collingwood getting a mid first round pick for Daisy Thomas is completely insane.

Intangible and unmeasurable are not synonyms. Nothing is intangible, but there are plenty of immeasurables.

Anyway, I appreciate your replies. I'm off to get sloshed so I'll continue this discussion another time

Fair enough.

I'm just knocking back my first Singha of a long evening here in BKK!

Enjoy

Maybe they pay nothing and there are no compo picks and it moves us to a system where veteran players who are nearing the end of a contract re-up more quickly or get traded before the contract expires ....

Why there is a further corruption of the draft by compo picks has me perplexed, it's reasonable in a period of expansion clubs but beyond that no. Especially picks as high as say 20. You could lose a Dale Thomas who you have every ability/right to sign and get a top 15 pick for letting him walk?

You get $500k+ of cap space and a Top 15 pick for deciding not to sign a player that you could.

Complete nonsense.
Yep. I agree.
Unfortunately the AFL seem hellbent on 'compo'. They need to make it less damaging to sides not privy to the transaction if they are to persist with it or **** compo off altogether. The bolded part is especially pertinent: what's to say Collingwood did not want to re-sign him anyway? Instead let him go under the guise of FA and receive a prize.

Which is exactly what Collingwood are doing. They got 8 or 9 seasons out of him, happy to let him walk, use the cap space to go after Jessie White/others and pocket, apparently, pick 11...

And they keep their own first pick.

Ridiculous.

Dayle Garlett is set to be drafted I hope , not sure Adam Simpson will go anywhere near drafting him .

A Essendon supporter posted on trade and draft board Facebook quotes , sounds like good fun and a bit different might test his team-mates a little . Don't think we will go anywhere near him but these FB quotes are just a little fun and maybe arrogance but Garlett can play and should be picked up regardless but not by WCE .

Fremantle board mentioning the possibility of them getting Darling off us. I don't think this would ever happen but what would be a fair trade if it did?
