I like the Hartley pick-up if true. He would give us depth in both KPD and ruck positions. Haven’t seen much of him at AFL level but going through his stats he is an elite ground ball player (unlike Brand) which is assuring for a guy who is 199cm. In his three games this season he also averaged more than twice the number of contested defence 1v1’s as Frawley and actually lost less (19% vs 22%) so it seems he is a good one-on-one defender. He also averaged more spoils, tackles and marks than Frawley and has an elite disposal efficiency across his career (85%).

While stats certainly aren’t everything, they do paint a promising picture for this guy so I’d be happy to add him to the list and see what he has to offer.

This is the article I read only 30 minutes ago but it seems afl.com.au keep editing it to change the way things are worded. Twomey has now added “the Hawks are Hartley’s likely destination, although other clubs have also watched they key defender at VFL level closely throughout the year and expressed interest”.

Doesn’t make sense for Hartley to choose the Hawks if he is looking for opportunity .... Frawley, Frost and if Big Boy is going to spend some time down back.

Well thank god McEvoy isn't playing fullback then. But you're right, seems weird to move from VFL Bombers to Box Hill, pretty sure we've just offered him a better contract. Or maybe we're saying there is a position available and Frost is no lock, want it come and get it.

"HAWTHORN looks set to swoop on Essendon defender Michael Hartley after he departed the Bombers this week."

"AFL.com.au understands the Hawks are Hartley's likely destination, although other clubs have also watched the key defender at VFL level closely throughout the year and expressed interest. "

Perhaps that’s why we moved Brand on while suring up our FB and CHB positions post Frawley.

And then Siss can play that intercepting HBF position similar to Howe from the Pies but more damaging by foot.

Hartley a bit underwhelming but adds depth so all good.. Frost and Hartley decent enough stop gaps but we really do need an elite tall defender, hoping Kosi can be that.

A less loopy Trent Croad type would be awesome.....
Loved being being renowned for having a high flying - rebounding - running through the center No. 24 style CHB.

Just seen the news above on the afl website.

Hartley is mature age at 26 and 199cm and 100kg.

The article says key defender but had a look at the dons website, he played forward and ruck as well as defence in the VFL finals.

Is he an answer for the loss of Pitto and Brand?

It seems his versatility would be helpful as depth for the seniors and BHH regular.

If the above is true and he is taken as a DFA as he refused to re-sign at his club then this will help the age balance at the club
as well as the videos I viewed online he communicates well both on and off the field.

Good pickup for you guys. Is AFL quality.

He was unfortunately stuck behind Hurley and Hooker for us and now that Hooker is starting to look a little cooked we have a young guy Zerk-Thatcher coming through who looks the goods.

We wanted to keep him but he would have been the 2nd depth position whereas with you I think he is number one behind Frawley and Frost.

Is an absolutly beautiful kick of the footy. Major issue is that he gets too grabby in the on one contests ans often gives away frees.

Can belt the leather off a ball when spoiling however.

On a side note. Don't read into the ruck thing.

Our VFL team had exactly one ruckman by the end of the season/finals. Hartley and Jok were thrown in their due to height and athletic ability.

He was pretty bad in there.

Good to know, I was reading the dons website where he had to play VFL finals in all of defence, forward and ruck positions in those games.
