I saw a similar thread about another teams center half back position, and it got my thinking (be afraid, be very afraid) about the Demons back line structure.
The main problem is Center Half Back, someone who can play on the tall, quick, strong,
big kicking center half forwards.

The person I would consider best for the job would be Neitz: He is one of the demons strongest, he can mark/punch well, and at 193 cm he is tall enough for the position. There is also the fact he is being wasted in the forward line, and in my opinion he should be in the back-line.

Nicholson: Started out as a ruckman, now has an important role in Melbourne defense. He is tall (197cm) strong, and is a good “stopper” with no real rebounding power. I would like to see him rotate between CHB and FB.

Ellis: I feel he lacks a bit of what is needed to be a good CHB, he is shorter than the others (190cm) and seems to lack the strength, height, speed and stopping power to be a CHB. Could however be a good third tall, rotating with the others but primarily taking the third back.

Bizzel: Seems to be destined to play the rest of his career in the back-line. Works hard, and tries to stick to his player as closely as possible. At 188cm he is by no means short, but at the same time he gives away precious centimeters to FF/CHF players. That is why I would put him on one of the flanks, or in the pocket, on any teams 4th tall forward.

Whelan: Is a great running back whose rebounding skills are invaluable. Is injury prone, but often helps hold together the Melbourne back-line. Whelan is lightning on his feat and at 180cm he is one of the Demons leading small back-men. Can play on either the flank or in the pocket. The only concern is that he often pushes up the ground, and if the ball is easily turned over his opponent would be unmanned in the forward line.

Walsh: Has allot in common with Whelan, from both players having surnames starting with W, to both sharing the height of 180cm. He plays a similar role to Whelan, pushing up the ground often for a total of 12 goals in his career. Both Walsh and Whelan can be rotated into the midfield if required, but this is not needed with the demons already having a strong midfield.

Broadbridge: Another red headed defender, broady is tall at 191cm but is only starting out in his career. Could be a key position back of the future, but for now, he will play most likely on the flank. Had a reasonable first season for the Dee’s, who could forget that first kick of his that was a point, but due to a 50 meter penalty he had another shot from the goal square and made no mistake :)

Breese: What can you say, he barely started last year when he injured his knee.. season over. While he won’t be risked until a full 12 months after his knee reconstruction, he could play senior footy this year.

Lamb: Well he has had a very poor start to the season, being convincingly beaten by players he should never have been playing on in the first place. He needs to develop more as a player before he is risked as a key position back in the season proper. Lets just hope his career doesn’t mimic the game he played on Friday night.

Well that’s all I can be bothered typing, there are others I didn’t talk about, Febey, Brown, Williams and the new recruits, but I have done enough :) In the end if Neitz plays back and the rest of our back-line (or at least the key players) remain injury free, the defenders are not half as bad as it is made out to be. You have to remember on Friday night Ellis and Bizzel where playing as our #1 and 2 tall backs, when they should be 3 and 4. They where out of position, but didn’t do too badly.

What are your thoughs on the Dee's backline? :)
Me out (shows how bored I was tonight doesn't it) :D

What about Paul Wheatley? He's got future CHB written all over him.

Neeta's the best man for the position (One of the best in the league in fact) but he's needed up forward to kick a winning score. I'd leave him up forward for a while longer but if he doesn't hit form & we are leaking goals the I'd move him back & give someone else a go at Full Forward.

Darren Jolly's another tall option to be considered he's apparently more suited to a key position than Simmonds who did a pretty good job when called on in the past.

I think Cam Bruce could also play there but will probably be used up forward too.

Wheatley is an interesting one, he can play back, midfield, or even up forward, and with him possesing a great kick, I feel he could be groomed to take over from Schwartz as CHF.

I agree with you that Jolly can play back when not in the ruck, his skills let him down a bit on Friday, but he seems to be a good prospect.

Bruce I am unsure about, I believe he was tried by ND in teh backline for afew games with limited success, with Melbourne's lack of consistant forwards at the moment, I'd say he will be left in the forward line for awhile yet. Unless of course he is moved down back and Bizzel gets moved forward.

All these footy posts are weird, lol, not used to having to think about what I type... Guess I'll attempt to analyse the Midfield, Forwards and Rucks sometime, not that my attempts are very good :p

Personally, I think Nietz is better suited to Full Forward, but that doesnt mean that we should keep him there for a whole game if he's struggling to get a touch.

We really missed Schwarta and Nicho last night. Just their strength in the key positions wouldve taken a stack of pressure off Bizzell/Ellis and freed them up a bit to play their own game.

Our ideal backline when the side is injury-free would be...
B. Walsh--Nicholson--Whelan
HB. Bizzell--Ellis--Broadbridge

If we find this set-up is struggling or not strong enough against some sides, then we always have the option of moving Nietz there for Bizzell who is a proven forward. I think Nietz will have to live with doing a bit of rotation until we can find the right set-up.

BT - I agree about Wheatley - he'll most likely be the one who becomes our permanent CHB, but they have to give him a go there first! I thought that was what the Ansett Cup was for...:o

Im a big fan of Broadbridge and I think he could do a reasonable job as a CHB fill-in, but I think he is more suited to a roaming half-back role at the moment.

Neitz has to go back. It gives the tem more confidence. He was recruited as a backman, played for Victoria as a backman and is by far most suited to the position.
Ellis and Lamb will improve and help the backline out.

Ellis will bef improve and Lamb just sux. I think that is three years in a row he has played in the pre season, and three times has been total crap. I think he has gotten worse every year!

And Neita at CHB is perfect. Biz to full forward.

Neeta's is our best CHB & our best FF. We need to be positive & play him up Forward. He had a great 95 season at CHF but struggled there ever since & besides that's The Ox's spot :). However if he & the team are going as badly as on Fri night then FF is the last place i'd have him. CHB,FB,CHF,Centre,Wing, Ruck even, anywhere but Full Forward!

BPP, Wheatley might just get his chance in a key position in what are practically 2 dead Wiz Cup rubbers (Ellis is suspended in rounds 1&2). I'm a fan of Broady's too & agree the flank's the spot for him at the moment maybe in one more years time he too will be ready to step up further, I think he's 189 cm (plays taller) so he might be a bit short, we'll see I hope.

B.T.'s backline

B: Whelan,Nicholson,Febey/Brown
HB:Walsh,Ellis,Broadbridge/Bizzell

The Ox should be back next week which'll ease the pressure slightly. I get the feeling that Danners is gearing some blokes up for round 1. Don't be surprised if Neeta,Ox,Woey & Ooze steadily buid up to the season proper. Vardy & Powell are also aiming for early season returns & we'll find out then how serious our campaign is.

I also belive ND was giving our new recruits a game with Sandy last week (even though it didn't end up going ahead) and then bring them into the side for the 2nd and 3th Wizard Cup games. This being players such as Molan, Armstrong, Miller, and maybe even Jamar and Nick Walsh.

Seems like an ok idea, hopefully some of the youngsters can get their chance this week!

And Clarky!!!!!! :( :D

As long as he learned from last week and he actually decides to play our young guns this week and the following, I'll be happy with ND.

I reckon Daniher should have played alot more of the rookies in the first game. By looking at other teams, they pretty much played most of their rookies to get a feel for them and to give them a run in the big time early. For some stupid reason, he decided not to do that which will most likely backfire right in his face.

And what did I tell you Or??? Clark?? Pfft! Can't even get a run in the pre-season cup now!! :D :p

Now I'm tipping Clark to get the game in Adelaide, prove he isn't good enough, and never play again, meaning you would nveer SEE him play :D :D

Nah I'm j/k, I'd like to see him succeed.

Don't worry.... I already got a whole post planned out for him!! HE IS GONNA PLAY & I WILL SEE HIM PLAY...... :(:(:(

Keep dreaming.

And don't waist a post on the guy. You will have nothing footy wise to say about him anyway, and that's what this board is supposed to be for.

Dont get too cocky, I admit he should play, to see how good he really is (or isn't) but he may not get in the team!
