Hate having my mouth full of anesthetic for 3 hours afterwards so I can't eat or talk. Other than that I like the dentist, means you get a few hours off school/work.

Public system can be shonky though. Had two fillings put in a month ago that have already fallen out, and on top of that the dentists are usually trainees/overseas students who aren't very experienced in their field. Private system provides great treatment when you can afford it, never had a problem with it other than some dentists trying to rip me off (as they do).

Used to see a dentist when I was a kid by the name of Dr Blood. Made visits there a little scary for a while. :eek:
 
Sitting up atm with a toothache that is driving me mad - raw nerve.

If I can't get a booking to see my dentist today, I'll be back asking for some recommendations for a dentist in the SE suburbs later on. :(

Hahah I too got scared to death at seeing Dr. Blood when I was younger. Have just recently been to the dentist for the first time in about 8 years and I have found it a lot less traumatic than I thought it'd be, I've even had fillings done with more to come next week. The dentist I go too is an older woman but who likes a chat and is very careful. Plus her assistant is pretty cute as well which makes it awkward when the dentist tells you to spit and her assistant has to clean it up lol
 
I had an awful dentist about 6 years ago and scared the bajessus out of me. When I needed my wisdom tooth looked at, I waited until I was in incredible pain to be looked at because I could still remember my last experience.

I found a new dentist to have a look at my wisdom, and he was amazing. Very friendly/chatty and aware I am scared. He took out three teeth about 6 months ago (for braces) and it was fine. Also the first week of braces is like torture! I am actually looking forward to going back to my dentist!
 
Little Gee Dub decided to come out to play while I was at the dentist a few years ago. Puberty sucked. Lucky she was a binary scale 1/lime. Now have an older, but nice dentist, although I still fear it will happen again.

Haha, how did you manage to get turned on at the dentist?! I hate dentists. That would be the last thing on my mind unless it was like in 'Horrible Bosses'.

Used to ride past a Dentist surgery in Dianella and his name is Dr Brick.

Quick and easy tooth removal should be his motto.

I got slugged $2100 for a crown last year. Was more painful than any of the procedures although I requested no anaesthetic for the building up and fitting as I hate the feeling afterwards.

I had something similar after not going to the dentist for 5 years after leaving school. The first bloke did a bad job of putting it on so it it only lasted about 6 years so I had to get a gold one put on which cost another $1300.. though it should hopefully last most of my life now. It's kind of annoying because apart from that I have good teeth and only one other filling.

Best advice for anyone is to go once a year, it may cost a bit when you are only studying or whatever but it could potentially save you a lot of not just money but time. I have mates with gold HBF and still hardly ever go, just don't get that when it's free..
 
I worked and managed a dental surgery for 3 years so i got used to the environment. Went in knowing nothing about dental work and left knowing way too much.
 
I have to go to one in an hour, unsure exactly whats wrong but i am fearing a root canal at worst case..... but hopefully i can get away with just a clean. I will probably end up telling them to yank the tooth out (pretty sure its a back molar that is the cause) if they say root canal. Basically last saturday night i chomped on a foccaccia base decked out like a pizza (it is a specialty meal). Funnily enough it happened on the very last piece i was eating, i bit into it and the noise + pain was just like when the dentist uses the tool to grip onto a tooth and pull it out (i had to get my baby teeth extracted years ago because the adult ones were coming through and my baby teeth would not fall out on their own). I spat out blood, but no tooth :eek: in fact the area where it happened looks like everything is normal (but i'm no dentist). While i am not in agony, the sensation i have had in my mouth since then had me concerned enough to book in and get everything checked out. Even if it's not a tooth infection and turns out to be the gum area surrounding it.... that is infected i will be sad. It won't cost me as much, but i'll still be sad haha.

I had a similar experience a few years ago, i bit into some food, felt pain..... thought i chipped a tooth. I chipped it alright, but luckily it was only excess plaque and not the tooth itself. After a clean and a bout of antibiotics to clear the infection in the gum i was fine.

Never really enjoyed going to the dentist, when i was in my early teens i had to get several baby teeth extracted so my adult teeth could come through. It was relatively straight forward until i had to get the final one extracted when i was 18. The dentist couldn't get it out the conventional way, so he drilled and sawed it out of me. I preferred my baby teeth to be honest, as my adult teeth are not as strong in comparison. For example my adult canine teeth grew to be as thin as my incisor/front teeth. My molars grew out like canine teeth etc. After that incident i started to only go to the dentist when i had to. I returned 9 years later due to the problem in the second paragraph after that i didn't think the dentist was so bad. I had to return again a year and a half later to replace an old filling and get one for another tooth.

I have to get all four wisdom teeth removed under general and it's going to cost me a ****load. It's $1400 for the extraction, not including the fee for the anaesthetist ($200-400) and hospital fee (however much that will cost). How much has it cost for others who've had the same procedure? Why does it cost so freaking much!!!
 
Sounds like you are getting a pretty good price.

Unfortunately, you're finding out that non-essential healthcare is expensive. Wait til you need a joint reconstruction or something.

I've been told by some to get mine out and was about to do it but the dentist I currently use reckons to now leave just leave them in, I guess there are probably risks either way..

From memory that sounds about right, but if you don't have health insurance a private hospital overnight was about $1,000 or you could use public hospital for free but the waiting list was about a year..
 
Thanks for the info guys. I will need to find out how much the hospital fee will cost. I am only in for a day surgery so not staying overnight or anything, so I'm guessing it won't cost as much. We only have the very basic private health insurance. Because I'm still young and quite a noob, I went to the appointment with the surgeon by myself and didn't really ask any questions regarding going through the public health system. The oral surgeon said I had to get them out eventually, but maybe it's worth going publicly and waiting?
 
Hospital fees for day surgery are still pretty expensive because the pricey bit is booking the theatre.

Were you referred to the oral surgeon by your dentist? Some dentists are happy to do the operation themselves in the chair if it's not complicated, and I gather that is substantially cheaper.
