Resource Depression/Anxiety the silent killers - everyday is RUOK day. #SpeakUpStayChatTy

For the last 6 months I've tried to write up a few things on this thread, only to delete it each time before submitting it, so here goes.

About 18 months ago my family was torn in two on Christmas night, by the actions of a violent drunk and their family. Numerous court cases and eventual compensation still doesn't alleviate what happened.

Only a few days ago I found out via FB (of all places) that a close friend of mine passed away in sudden and tragic circumstances and today the service was streamed online.

So I've tried to keep this short and lastly, check up on your friends and family, take the time to listen as you never know what someone is really going through. As the thread title says, "everyday is RUOK day".

Sorry for your loss Nate7. Thanks for the reminder.

A friend of mine works as a phone counselor for Lifeline. Hearing her talk about her experiences really hits home that they save lives. They are a great resource for anyone struggling.

If someone wants to seek professional help...silly question but what do they do? I know lifeline is there for crisis help, but for less 'urgent' issues, do you go to a psychologist? A neuropsych? A therapist? A counselor? Just google until you find one who looks alright?

I've been struggling a bit with anxiety lately and a few particular unresolved (although I'm not sure they can be resolved) issues are primarily responsible at the moment. It's setting off my neuro condition as well which is less than ideal. I just have no idea where to start with this stuff.

I saw a psychologist, find one that specialises in anxiety!

You can go straight to a therapist/psychologist. Waiting times are reasonably long at the moment. I was at a similar point in June and the first appointment I could get was next week. Fortunately, a cancellation came up and I got in about 3 weeks ago.

If you do it that way you will be paying full tote. Mine charges $180 for a session. The alternative is you can go to your GP and if they diagnose you with anxiety and put you on a mental health plan with a referral to a psych and you will get a rebate on up to 20 sessions in a year. I think the rebate is circa $130. Your GP will probably also have a network of therapists they are happy to refer to.

Agree 100%

I waited 8 weeks to see a someone at headspace and I will never ever go there again, the guy who was supposed to help me hung up on me.

Seconding the recommendation of getting a Mental Health Care Plan and referral via your GP, especially if you don't have anyone specific in mind to see or if paying full price for the sessions would be an issue.

Second the local G.P. TMB. 👍 If you're lucky you'll find a great one.

Start off with your friends. Without over burdening 1 friend, hit up a few with part of the issue/s, just in conversation. I had 4 that knew part of the story and then 1 who had a pretty good understanding of what I was going through, pretty much was my sounding board for the lot. Except for that 1 fella in the Life of Brian, we're all different, so something that works for 1, may not for others. A major factor is your comfort in talking, imo, as well as obviously the reaction/advice you get in return.

Just checking in TMB ( even though l know you got no locks )
You good today ? 🙂

Thanks for checking in mate. Feeling a fair bit better both mentally and physically today. Had to go to hospital for an injection earlier in the week to stop vomiting.

I still need to formulate a plan to dealing with some of these things I need to work through but I'll do that once the storm has receded and the calm arrives. GP is on leave so I'll chase him up as soon as I can.

Got mates here to listen 👍

Lots of good footy to watch over the weekend, Spice to debut and we can put 2021 behind us from a footy perspective.

Glad you are feeling a bit better mate. Take your time to research who you will think get the best results for you in the long-term.

Always happy to take a PM if you want.

I’ve seen a few psychologists. The first one I just talked a lot which didn’t really get me anywhere. Wasn’t till my recent stay in hospital that I learned how many different types there are. For me a clinical psychologist was the way to go, basically CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and DBT (Dialectical behavior therapy) have been very helpful as they have a more scientific focus on the reason why the brain works the way it does. It’s more of a two way conversation, they’ll challenge your thoughts and give you practical recommendations on how to get through the feeling.

You can get a referral from a GP but you can do research and choose a psychologist that you think will help you.

I think neuropsychologists mostly deal with brain injuries, conditions and that type of thing.

I’ve also learned that you need to be pretty blunt with what you want out of the therapy. I used to just let them dictate where we should start. All the psychs that I had in hospital said they like it when a person just tells them what they want out of the session and if it’s not in their skill set would gladly refer you to someone they know is good in that area.

There’s a great website that lists all the registered psychs and what area they are trained in but I can’t remember the name of it now. It’s in my notebook at home. I’ll find it when I get home

Thanks King, much appreciated. I think this advice is really useful in broader application. I wonder if the mods could add something into the OP explaining the different options?

It came up in one of our last group sessions and the psychologists were surprised that most people didn’t know. They’re going to add it to the sessions going forward. Mental health is such a broad spectrum.

Struggling with a few things atm.
Hoping to get through it all.
Inbox is always open if you need to rant or just to talk, happy to listen😀
