Hodgepodge I hope you're seeing a doctor.

My mum has a personality disorder and often needs to be hospitalised. The last time she went into hospital the psych took her off all her medication she lost a lot of weight, currently a size 6, and is bouncing off the walls. The idiot doctor will not have anything more to do with her, shes "too hard", the hospital, which we pay top dollar for private health insurance so that she can stay In private rather than public won't take her back. Over Christmas and jan she was a nightmare and my brothers and I are the only ones there to look after her.

The public mental health system is absolutely ****ed.

Anyway, I know how bad the mental health system is. It really is a joke.

An infection in a lymph gland won't make you depressed. It can lead to a depressed mood for a few days/week until it is resolved, but it will not give you depression unless somehow it creates a ginormous and completely ****ed up chronic inflammatory response and even then... not really depression until you have other factors involved.

How does a chronic inflammatory response cause depression?

RA, SLE and the like, for example, are chronic inflammatory processes. These people don't seem more depressed than the general population, and perhaps more accurately, from other chronic conditions eg CCF.

I can't think of a physiological mechanism that would link chronic inflammation to a depressed mood, only the associated psychosocial factors would cause that.

Sure, there is often raised cortisol levels in depression, but this is fairly non-specific.

I am surprised you have not had some sort of retort in this thread!

I wish you luck, i hope you kind find an avenue to compassionate health care.

I think you'll probably understand when i say some health care proffesionals will pick apart what you say sentance by sentance so to avoid dealing with what you saying in paragraphs...Perhaps they might contridict themselves?

Ironic thing is those who defend the system that way are being passive agressive and apparantly agression is not tolerated, well towards the system. Also various personalty disorders cover the sought of rhetoric used to defend the system...

Hide in your shell, cos the world is out to bleed you for a ride
What will you gain, making your life a little longer?
Heaven or hell, was the journey cold that gave you eyes of steel?
Shelter behind painting your mind and playing joker

Too frightening - to listen to a stranger
Too beautiful - to put your pride in danger
You're waiting for someone to understand you
But you've got demons in your closet (You've got demons in your closet)
And you're screaming out to stop it (And you're screaming out to stop it)
Saying life's begun to cheat you
Friends are out to beat you
Grab on to what you can scramble for

Don't let the tears linger on inside now
Cos it's sure time you gained control
If I can help you, if I can help you
If I can help you, just let me know
Well let me show you the nearest signpost
To get your heart back and on the road
If I can help you, if I can help you
If I can help you, just let me know.

All through the night as you lie awake and hold yourself so tight
What do you need, a second - hand movie star to tend you?
I as a boy, I believed the saying the cure for pain was love
How would it be if you could see the world through my eyes?

Too frightening - the fire's becoming colder
Too beautiful - to think you're getting older
You're looking for someone to give an answer
But what you see is just illusion (What you see is just illusion)
You're surrounded by confusion (You're surrounded by confusion)
Saying life's begun to cheat you
Friends are out to beat you
Grab on to what you can scramble for
Don't let the tears linger on inside now
Cos it's sure time you gained control
If I can help you, if I can help you
If I can help you, just let me know
Well let me show you the nearest signpost
To get your heart back and on the road
If I can help you, if I can help you
If I can help you, just let me know

I wanna know, I wanna know, I wanna know, I've got to know
I wanna know you, I wanna know you, well let me know you
I wanna feel you,
Oh, I wanna touch you,
Please let me near you, let me near you
Can you hear what I'm sayin'?
Well I'm hopin', I'm dreamin', I'm prayin'
And I know what you're thinkin'
See what you're seein'
Never, ever let yourself go
Hold yourself down, hold yourself down
Why don't ya hold yourself down?

Why don't you listen, you can trust me!
(so what you gonna take him to?)
Oh there's a place I know the way to...
(so what you gonna make him do?)
A place there is no need to...
(so what's he gonna...)
To feel you...
(so what's he gonna...)
To feel that you're not alone.
(so what's he gonna do?)

Oh won't you hear me?
(so what you gonna take him to?)
I know exactly what you're feelin'
(so what you gonna make him do?)
Cos all your troubles are within you...
(so what's he gonna...)
So begin to...
(so what's he gonna...)
To see that I'm just bleeding too.
(so what's he gonna do?)

Love me - love you, love is the way to...
(so what you gonna take him to?)
Help me help you...
(so what you gonna make him do?)
Why must we be so cool?
(so what's he gonna...)
Oh so cruel?
(so what's he gonna...)
Oh, we're such damn fools!
(so what's he gonna do?)

(so what you gonna take him to?)
(so what you gonna make him do?)
(so what's he gonna...)

Passive aggressive is a broad defence term used by those with no strong position of their own to defend themselves against those with a general idea. I'm borderline paralytic at the moment, but I'm still severely turned off by those who use the term as if they have some kind of power over the system and offer themselves as some kind of brain-dead victim of the masses.

Grow up, get a clue, then come back and talk passive aggressive like an adult.

Well that didn't make much sense.

As someone who has someone very close suffering from this I can give a bit of a viewpoint.

This person has had a history of some dreadful things happening in the past, some inflicted, some accidental, some disastrous (in that Victorian summer way).

How they made it to adulthood is beyond me, but they eventually had 'everythinig' that family and friends thought someone should have to be happy.

Which, when depression hits, leads to the obvious question "What have you got to be depressed about??" This does NOT help.

Most people HAVE NOT GOT A CLUE when it comes to depression and it's effects. So to say "Ignore the bad stuff", "Buck up", "It's a nice day - get outside and cheer up" and the like does NOT help.

Celebrities dont help. Family continually produce magazine and newspaper articles of so-and-so who "had" depression for three months or whatever but "got over it". (Something family members continulally ask over and over when is that going to happen?) This does NOT help.

This person, without the medication, would not be here. Simple as that. There have been numerous attempts, especially in the first five-ish years until diagnosed properly. Now, after about 13 years, they are at the point where although they still drop down that black hole, they recognise the symptoms and struggle though the hours/days/weeks it may take each time, knowing there will be a little bit of light atthe end of the tunnel - and we are damn lucky to have made it this far. And this will most likely be ongoing for the rest of their life.

Do I understand what they are going through? - hell no. No one does. Every single one person suffering through this is different. All you can do is be there for support. And while you aren't there, at work or whatever, you ride the balance point of hoping the phone rings and dreading that it might.

No one chooses to have this black clous descend upon them, and not one of any of the people I have spoken to about it would wish it on their worst enemy.

So in a nutshell - causes? Not one single thing, but a myriad of different things for different people.

Cure - none yet. But hopefully time, support, love and (for this person) a shitload of medication will see us through.

I am: yet what I am none cares or knows,
My friends forsake me like a memory lost;
I am the self-consumer of my woes,
They rise and vanish in oblivious host,
Like shades in love and death's oblivion lost;
And yet I am! and live with shadows tost

Into the nothingness of scorn and noise,
Into the living sea of waking dreams,
Where there is neither sense of life nor joys,
But the vast shipwreck of my life's esteems;
And e'en the dearest--that I loved the best--
Are strange--nay, rather stranger than the rest.

I long for scenes where man has never trod;
A place where woman never smil'd or wept;
There to abide with my creator, God,
And sleep as I in childhood sweetly slept:
Untroubling and untroubled where I lie;
The grass below--above the vaulted sky.

Those self help books are such a wank.
Indeed.

Some can be good if they provide some specific tools to help you with aspects of your life. But I have read a couple and I think they operate on the same business model as the diet industry - build up the the hopes and dreams of the masses to a level that is not realistically achievable, provide a way for them to get a few 'small wins' early on, then watch as they crash and burn again and have to buy another book.

Folks, we all have weaknesses - by all means wrk to improve on them but don't beat yourself up about it.

Agree. Unless they contain practical strategies and tools they are usually fluffy nonsense.

If you think Tony Robbins is terrible, try having some HR bod try to base a seminar around his work and failing completely. That was two hours I'll never get back.
