Need to draft a small defender and bring in some outside run.
Overlooking Darcy Byrne-Jones could be a mistake as he would of enhanced our small defender stocks immediately whilst we could of grabbed one of Lloyd/Gordon in the rookie draft, hope we add one of Templeton/Bourke to add to the outside stocks. Batsanis could also add to the lack of outside midfielders.

Shaun Grigg has done exactly what he was brought to the club to do and done it extremely well so move on and find another punching bag to slag

Was one of 5 guys to play all 23 games. If he didn't come top 10 he'd be in trouble, seems you get votes for every game played. Though I do agree he's best 22 until someone proves they're better. Many have the potential, no one has actually done it.

The fact that he played all 23 games in itself indicates that he is well and truly rated by the coaches as a best 22 player and not just fringe

No doubt. Personally thought he went backwards this year after he had an excellent 2012 and we have players who are potentially better but at this stage that's all it is, potential. And we all know how that can play out. Hopefully he can re-capture his 2012 form for the teams sake and his own.

Well we're not all gonna agree with every decision the club makes and we're entitled to our own opinion and that's what this site is for, to discuss our opinions.
I just feel that there are other players who could fill his roll and have a bigger impact than he's having. If he could get back to his 2012 form then absolutely I'd be happy with him in the team. But I'd personally rather someone else have that spot that will impact and will soak up the experience and grow, whereas I don't think grigg will improve anymore as a player. This is all I see us getting from him. Love it if he proves me wrong! But I just don't see it

I'm particularly interested in what the coaches do with our new recruits. All are mid/forwards so I'm curious to see where they play the majority of their football next year and over the preseason. Even the VFL side can not play all of them up forward so some will be forced to play large stints in the center even if they are rotating.

Yep however that rule could apply to 22 players yet we will bag them anyway!

Theres a particular role that shaun grigg was brought to the club to play & He has done his job as required

Not sure what people expect from him, The guy runs all day kicks goals and minds his man also when asked to nulify opponents has carried out the role admirably

The same people are here posting at what a valuble player Matty White was and we will miss his input but Shaun Grigg offers so much more than White ever did

If we were to realease Grigg there would be a dozen clubs lined up for his services, So lets not just bag players because they are not all Abletts,Judd,Cotchin,Selwoods

Who on our current listed players do you have in mind that will/could be that player and what have you seen from this/these players that makes you believe that he can perform griggs role better than Shaun Grigg

His kicking is back to being below average and it would be nice to upgrade that area. Having said that it was solid in 2012, so he is capable of being an upgrade on himself if that makes sense. I agree we'd miss Grigg more than White.

Grigg does a good job of what he is paid to do. That he isn't a superstar is no surprise as we got him cheap. He's an OK B grader.

To the thread. I reckon our main depth concern is simply that we rely on a core group of players with little cover. We are quite reliant on guys like Griff, Mc D, Helbig, Dea, etc to move into being genuine AFL players. If a couple of them reach the equivalent level of Grigg then we have a much stronger squad. If we are really lucky we get a couple of mids and a CHF coming through. If Griff can make it as a half decent B grade CHF our team is so much stronger.

However, the age of these younger players means that they should start becoming AFL ready soon. We should, if our development is OK and we are lucky, have a significant boost to our depth this year from young players improving. But I won't couint my chickens until they have turned up, been defeathered, cooked and served with a nice gravy and roast veges.

Possible that with Grigg playing a bit more inside this season that his kicking efficiency dropped away. Perhaps becoming more outside again in 2014 will see him get back to being dangerous by foot.

my only issue with Grigg is that almost every kick is a long bomb and he never kicks to a direct target

I'm not sure who, that's why I posted here to ask people who they thought we could replace him with. And maybe right now he is in our best 22, but if he was playing for Sydney or hawthorn do you really think he'd be in their 22? I would give his midfield spot to say arnot or even this Gordon we just picked up. Someone who can perform and still improve. Because do you honestly think grigg is going to improve that much now in his career?

Jackson won a B&F this year yet was being spoken about like Grigg is 12 months ago.

Who are we talking about here?o_O BTW left wing is a specific position shortish Arnot wouldn't be suited to anyway and I thought Gordon was a right footed forward?

That is true, and yeah like I said would love it if he could prove me wrong and improve like Jackson proved all of us wrong this year

Well Newman or Houli could cover Griggs roll and open up a spot of an arnot or McDonough to play an develop. But by the sounds of it we don't actually have the player to take Griggs spot in the team at the moment.

You see thats just the point !

Arnot & Gordon have a long way to go and alot to prove even before they are considered at Griggs level IF they ever get there, Also Arnot is a very very different player to Grigg and plays a different role/position as with Gordon he is more a HF/Inside mid where Grigg is a wingman/outside runner that drifts foward on occasions

The only player i can see replacing Shaun Grigg in the team in the next 2 years is Kamden McIntosh but he is just a kid in his 2nd year coming off a major injury

You dont give away your perfectly running commodore in the hope that 1 day you might get a BMW
