Have a read of these two quotes FreoRicci Can you understand how ridiculous this sounds? The opposition apparently played their position perfectly (my words not yours) by 'kicking a casual 3' yet our boy is 'lucky he got 2'.
Both seemingly did nothing else all game.
Then this gem.

This stat in no way 'highlights your point' that our forwards are too far up the ground. It does show that both teams forwards spend pretty much equal time in defensive areas.
You have a pre conceived image of what you want to see, that is Freo failing due to poor coaching by Ross.
That DID NOT happen in this game (to any large extent at least). We played well. How can you not see that?
Let’s also not forget that the time Tabs was up the ground was skewed by the fact he was on the ball for some part of the game.

E Shed it's posts like this why I keep visiting Bigfooty.

I must ask you though, does this mean you've changed your views on Ross as coach? I'm aware that optimism on the side isn't the same as optimism with the coach.
Thank you for the nice words. I like to write so its nice when people appreciate it.
Its a tough question about Lyon. I still would have preferred we paid him out over the off-season and got the most promising of the up and coming assistants. Ran a broom through the footy dept, new fitness guys, new assistants, the lot. Of course that would have cost a fortune and was probably not practical.
The main reasons are the usual - his gameplan is out of date, he's a control freak, inflexible, there are new paradigms about how to manage a team he's not across etc.
Plus I really wanted, with such a young group to have a fresh coach to create it from the ground up.

Having said that he has an incredible record of being able to get a buy in from the player group and given enough weapons to work with he can forge teams that are tough to beat. Plus I think he's seeing his mortality. Another year of dour, uninspiring footy and he was gone.
There is no doubt he's changed things up and I'm starting to see signs of what we saw in 2012. A team that believes and gives incredible effort.
We still lack enough classy players but I began to believe a bit on the weekend that if Hogan really gets moving, he & McCarthy could be a really potent pairing with Walters, Switkowski, Matera around them. If we get Hill, Blakely Logue back we take a few of the blue collar guys out it could get interesting. We have a super backline group and enough in the middle to work with.

Ultimately footy is something I want to enjoy, I take it too seriously at times and I want to have it as something to look forward to on the weekend. For a long time now I haven't enjoyed watching Freo play and I mainly blame Lyon which isn't totally fair as our list managers need to take some heat. I think Bell will steer us well.

But I think we might see some decent footy from Freo this year so while I'm not totally back on the Lyon train I'll have a bit more patience that he might make it at least worth watching again.

That was a lot better than I thought it would be on replay after seeing 7.14 in the scores.

First quarter/half the forward entries were atrocious. 3rd was much better - when we move it faster we have more space. But even when we don't we should be looking to hit up leading targets more often. Even if they're playing a zone and getting McGovern loose patience is the key not bloody bombing it. You see the Eagles do a chip kick 15m (more like 10 really) sideways when there's no option and it gives them a extra time to spot someone up. Not enough leading out of the space by the forwards - it's too clogged. Some of that is the other team clogging it up but that should free up numbers for us to move it around a bit like they do. Part of it is probably personnel co-ordination, part of it is also probably plan. I'd almost say sack Ross for that alone given the persistence of the issue, but I think something is starting to click at times.

I actually thought Hughes and Wilson were pretty reasonable which seems to be a bit contrary to some. We still really need to pick up another HBF or have Logue settle into the role to push Cerra to the middle though.

Look I think we all came off watching that game thinking the same thing. Taberner should NOT take up soccer.

I was going through my PVR looking to clear a bit of space. Literally only a couple of hours before the game, I watched a few minutes of a game last year, can't remember which, but must have been early or late when he wasn't injured, and he kicked a beautiful 'soccer goal' kicking a moving ball flush from I'd say 20m out on a moderate angle. It would not be that easy with an actual soccer ball, let alone an AFL ball.

I guess that sums him up, you could create a highlights clip that makes him look like the next Wayne Carey, you can make another, sometimes from the same game that is all Jack Anthony.

Seems mixed on those two. Most rated (or at least appreciated) Hughes game because he became a key feature in the absence of Hamling - I thought he was good in the circumstances.

Similar with Wilson. I actually thought he was OK. But he's still isn't showing what we saw early last year and before he joined us. Never defensively great, lets be honest, but he's got to toughen up a bit. He's not a rookie 19 y/0 any more. More the issue, his drive off the back half is what he's there for and it's just not the level we expect and know he can deliver. All round, definitly better this game, maybe a turn in form is going to continue. I hope so, an important player for us if firing.

He's such an enigma. He is Craberner and Graberner in the same game.

I do like him though and believe we play better with him in the team. Once Hogan gets up and running and McCarthy continues to fire it might be less pressure on his shoulders for him.

Yeah that's a cop out from Lyon re kicking.

Even if you only improve the effectiveness of a player's kicking by 5% with an increased focus at training, surely it's worthwhile at least trying. Particularly when poor disposal has plagued us for so long.

Effort only gets you so far, as we saw today.

Agree 100% - Skills training is most effective when done in a fatigued state (i.e - just like in an actual game!) No point the guys doing all of their skills training by themselves separate to the main training as they will never be fatigued enough to give match simulation. Some skills work has to be done after the main running / fitness sessions. Nothing against the guys then doing more themselves but this should be over and above.

Of course the Strength and Conditioning team may have an argument against this however not sure if I'd be tasking their word as gospel right now!

Imagine the difference in our squad if we could add two highly skilled footballers (SHill/Bennell) and swap out two ball burners.

Fantasy land stuff I know but we'd probably be 4-0.
I'd even just be happy with Blakely coming in as a genuine A grade extractor (who is accountable the other way). Blakely in and under wins the ball and gets it out to Tucker/Walters - class kick i50 to Hogan on the lead, bang! Or alternatively Blakely to half back, Cerra into the middle. Cerra/Tucker/Walters/BHill coming out of stoppage towards f50 with ball in hand... bang! Add in SHill/Bennell... mmmmm.

That game. I thought we'd won it at half time, but no. I'm glad all the footy people took hope from it.

As we're seeing get that forward line happening and scoring, well...

The non believers can whinge and chip away. Poor them.

I dunno. I always found it better to work on my finer skill development on my own, where I could work out best what worked for me.

I'm also thinking of an interview I heard with Hussey, who was batting coach for the IPL Super Kings. He pretty much said he's there mostly for individual problem solving and development work with the youngsters.

Maybe the club already does this, but perhaps a way to facilitate skills is to develop individual skills need development plans at the start of the year. Then have one or two specialist skills coaches who are available for players to consult as needed, so it's highly tailored as it's happening individually outside of training.
