Review Derby Post-Mortem

What would you like to see happen on the basis of the performance (if you want to call it that) in the Derby?

Strategy/ Tactics?

Personnell?

Structural changes?


A few of our players need some home truths told to them.

And I think it needs to come from within the playing group. From Mundy and Fyfe especially. Obviously, the coaching staff talking about too many passengers isn't enough. Some of these players need a kick in the arse from their team mates, and to be told how much it sucks to be carrying them.

The fracturing of performances is what destroys seasons, morale and cohesion within a group. If it's not addressed right now, it has the potential to ruin this season.

Just get back to the way we were playing last year. We're slow, can't get the ball out of defence and then kicking incredibly poor.

Seriously, it has nothing to do with this so called pressure, we are missing targets when not under pressure.

I want us sticking with the plan that made us so good last year.
That plan was pressure all around ground.
Attack through the middle not the flanks

Not a lot to say. Fyfe is a fking star. Hill is out of form and has plenty of company. The players we have out there simply aren't getting it done (as BT would say).
Much as I stand up for Johnson I do it because I don't like the lynch mob mentality that gets going here. It's clear he's horribly down on confidence and form and needs a spell in the WAFL but he's not on his own.
Without Ballantyne our forward line in impotent. Pav needs to go down there.
Until we get players back from injury there isn't a whole lot we can do.

How plan is nothing like Collingwood's. When was the last time you saw Collingwood kick the ball 50m backward. That's all we f***ing do these days. It's pathetic coaching. Not once has it worked this season.

We have some serious concerns for the rest of the year and the direction our brand of football is taking. This has to be the catalyst right now to start doing some things differently.

Much as I stand up for Johnson I do it because I don't like the lynch mob mentality that gets going here. It's clear he's horribly down on confidence and form and needs a spell in the WAFL but he's not on his own.

The lynch mob is right, mate. We were right on Dodd. Right on Thornton. Right on Head. Right on Schammer.

We all love footy and love analysing it. The criticism isn't misplaced. The difference between him and the aforementioned four is that he has talent, but chooses not to use it. When he shows his talent, he kicks awesome goals like that one in he third. Unfortunately for him, he deserves to be bracketed with those four.

I saw us do that half way the 4th quarter, and then again within the same passage of play and thought: are we playing for time or something?

When we were 21 points down with some momentum, Ibbotson took the mark on the wing and decided to kick the ball backwards i knew any chance of winning went out the door then, thats the moment the footy needed to be kicked long to chf we had to take chances to win, but yet he went defensive turnover and goal to WC.

See that's where I think you wrong. The idea that a player, any player "chooses" to perform badly is silly. I feel sorry for someone like MJ that can't put it together for whatever reason and I don't believe he chooses it at all. My argument has never been about suggesting he's playing well, its about how some players get treated around here. It's my own bugbear so I keep chipping away. But it's not because I think the criticism is unwarranted, it's the nature of the criticism.

Also Dodd and Thornton played some great footy for Freo. They went on too long but that's the nature of the team we had then. And I was heavily critical of playing Dodd toward the end when the game had gone past him. BUT I defended him when people attacked him a personal way. I didn't want him playing for Freo any more but I respected his achievements and heart. Do you see the difference?

The game plan sucks. We should be looking to play through the corridor. We've lost our intensity. We really need to be chasing everything down.

Quite a few players need spells in the WAFL. McPhee, MJ and Crowley all need some time out. Problem is, who is fit enough to replace?

I'm sick of listing things. There are some major deficiencies this year.

What do you suppose the admin spent money on last year? I said it last year:

More cart before the horse stuff to impress the easily led.

We've gone backwards, footy department wise. Struggle with all improvement in tactics for a number of teams. A real worry.

You can't defend the indefensible. MJ has had a shocker of the year and the longer he stays in the team the more vehement the criticism will be. I agree it's wrong when it gets personal but you seem to be defending for the sake of defending him E Shed.

Yes questions need to be asked. People keep pointing to injuries....and that may be valid looking purely at results, but the way we've lost the last two weeks has been absolutely pathetic. Players should be ashamed of themselves imo.....haven't seen a freo team lacking intensity and desire so much for quite a while, and thought those days were gone tbh. I agree with the passengers calls....too many are not comiited enough.....

True, we don't have the replacements ready for underperforming players. If we bring people in not like for like, do we have cattle enough to play a different type of game? And are we that flexible?

We really need players back, and I think Ballantyne might be one of the most important.

Do you not recall Johnson's lack of effort then subsequent drug use episode in the Collingwood game last year. Others on here (Chops specifically) have quite well noted his problems. It's a mental issue, NOT anything else. He does not come to play.

Players get targeted on here for not pulling their weight. Nothing else. No intrinsic bias. Johnson is quite plainly a relic from a Connolly era, or even an era prior. He needs to go.

Too many players out of form and displaying lack of effort on top of it.

Our 'team' cohesion has been sapped or broken it seems and we have a few individual efforts here and there.

We are simply out of form, our midfield has too few ball winners.

I really don't think it's worth analyzing the game, we saw the same effort the week before against Richmond.

There are two options that I can see; we can persevere until the injured start returning or we do what we did over the last couple of years and blood guys like Michie, Bucovaz, Mellington and maybe Sibo. Of course, none of them seem to be setting the world on fire in their respective WAFL teams but maybe the big stage could bring out the best in at least one of them.
