I'd like to chuck Paul Duffield's name into this discussion.

Has no run, has not been willing to compete at all, has been shit in the body on body stuff.

When Mzungu is fit and firing I'd have his **** on the block.
Lead the league in rebounds out of 50 last year. Its more about the balance. Too many soft guys in our back half. A 2-on-2 contest including Ibbo and Johnno and their opponents is always trouble. We really miss Suban I reckon.

I'd back in Duffield before that overrated hack Ibbotson.

harves ,just playing Pav forward for at least 75% of the time.
play fyfe on the ball as much as he likes,or can handle.
as we all know injuries to seven of our best 22 are crucifying us.
we just have to hope, we can notch up a couple of more wins before
some of best 22 start returning.

We got 17 free kicks in a row at one stage, between 2nd and 3rd qtr

Wow I didn't realise the Free kick count was 27:14 . Perhaps it reflects being first to the ball. Does anybody know if there a directive for umpires to have some sort of balance in awarding frees or is it purely on a case by case basis?

The main issue is that we are just second to the ball too often. We don't have a ripping midfield defensive game plan and our back line is solid enough (thanks to Elvis and Grover) but they can only handle so much entry. When we've been at our best, we've been hard at the contested ball and never made it easy for teams to get clear even if we can't control it. We found ways of pressuring right down the ground. The big disappointment for me in the last two games has been ability to make the opposition feel the heat. Even when we are struggling due to good opposition pressure, there is nothing that should stop our team turning around and doing the same (watch Collingwood and Geelong on Friday for a recent example).

It may seem a bit rich, but many of those were simply because the eagles were quicker to the ball. Get there first, get control and your more likely to get frees (even if they are dodgy ones from time to time). That stat just adds evidence to the fact that we're not hard at it enough. Simple as that.

So true, the amount of times we were second to the ball was woeful. They were just harder at the ball all day.....they seemed to have something to prove and we were just in second gear.....

In the gun: Anthony, Pearce, Lower, Johnson, JVB, Pitt
In the mix: Ballantyne (Test), Walters (Test), Palmer, Mitchie

Pav to CHF
Mitchie in as sub
Palmer in the middle
Hoping one of either Walters or Ballers gets up
Bradley FF

I think it is likely that Johnson, Lower and JVB will stay due to injuries/depth issues, but if Johnson has an injury as has been suggested by Haze on the radio then Faulks can have a run.

Anthony, Pitt and Pearce to be relegated to WAFL.

Seriously, have you watched the game at all?

Agree to an extent, however quite a few of them were just shocking especially in their F50 after their players kept ducking their heads. That's just BS.

When we were 21 points down with some momentum, Ibbotson took the mark on the wing and decided to kick the ball backwards i knew any chance of winning went out the door then, thats the moment the footy needed to be kicked long to chf we had to take chances to win, but yet he went defensive turnover and goal to WC.

Guys - no trolling here. You've had a terrible run with injury in pre-season and in the AFL you have to be only 5% off to cop a beating. You've done bloody well to be 4 and 3 considering. I reckon that the season is set up nicely for a good run home when you get some fitness and players back.

No troll detected. I agree, the fact is that it's very tight competition and you only have to be off a touch and you're shown up to be quite ordinary - look at the (almost) all conquering Saints for a good example.

In the end, with a full list and our core group in form, we've still only proven ourselves to be a 'second tear' team (behind the likes of Collingwood and Geelong). Throw injuries to some key players, poor pre-season, a few players down on form and confidence and you've got a recipe for some indifferent results.

Good call PapaJ

We've got far worse injuries than the saints yet they've been overtaken by GC on the ladder and we're sitting 4-3 which is pretty decent with the injuries we've had so far this year as Okester pointed out

Cheers Okester - no troll detected at all and that sums up what a lot of us are thinking. Once we get a few players back we're less likely to lose as much - not saying that it will just happen but with currently about 5-6 of our best 22 out, it's hard to see much improvement

You guys don't look the same side that started 2010 with a bang.

Sure, personnel-wise you aren't the same side but you don't seem to be getting an even spread of contributors and the relentless tackling pressure is not evident.

Today we had good games from Scott Selwood, Matt Rosa, Ash Smith, Mark Nicoski and a few others. Embley & Kerr pulled out late and the team still got the job done. Looking at your best players it was Mundy, Fyfe, Sandi, Pav again, then falls away after that. Obviously you'll benefit from getting players back, but I'm not sure if that alone will lift the lower profile players.

Still, with Port this week you've got every chance to notch up win number 5.

Reckon you blokes have a terrific list. Be patient. Injuries are the scourge of society at present and the AFL's Communist ways are prevailing. No issue here with that by the way. Love the way that fans of all clubs are seeing opportunity.

Just by the by. I am a Claremont tragic so Nat Fyfe is hopefully my love child. Serious superstar!

The biggest difference between this season and the last
Chris Scott

forgot about Mora, Barlow, key injuries etc? Chris Scott was still around when our wheels fell off end of last season and we limped home

Dont know the stats but i thought the umps were pretty favourable for us in the 1st qtr.
Obviously the umps had their little chat at qtr time an said we were getting favoured.
So they rectified the situation in the next 2 qtrs.

West coast deserved to win the free kick count though they were always first to the ball an continually had more numbers at the contests.
They were hungrier playing like a team desperate to finally get a derby win.
Where as we were a team who thought we had an edge on them an went out expecting to win instead of working hard for it

Im really looking forward to the next derby to be honest. We needed to lose one. Before today, only 7 Freo players in todays team had experienced a derby loss.

1st quarter, yes

I think it was 8 free kicks a piece sometime in the second, so what does that say about the kick count after that give we only got 6 more and the eagles got 19 more

we won the second half and in particular the third quarter, yet that was probably our worst quarter for frees as I doubt we got many at all

still didn't deserve to win - no heart at all

the injuries we have are terrible, and I believe once we get even a handful of those players back we will get a bit more luck, as those that are playing out of position can play where they actually play best and those who are forced to play when they are 80-90% but can't have a rest/recover because there are players that can't play at all, can rest etc. and we can properly rotate players, rather than play who is available regardless of form

things will get better

I felt worse after the Richmond loss TBH - the injuries have caught up with us and it will be at least a couple weeks before things can get better. thankful we play Port next and the side we have now is not much different to the side that went over to AAMI and did a number on the Crows

our lower profile players won't get a lift when the likes of Suban,Barlow(assuming he gets back to 2010 form(near on brownlow fav) fairly quickly),Ballantyne,Snos & Mzungu(yep i know 0 AFL games but did look mighty impressive prior to inj.) return because they will all be running around in the WAFL.

This comes bacK to the question a few of us have been asking all year. Are we just killing time until some key players return? A lot of the structures/tactics that have been in place since the as early as the pre-season seem to suggest we are...
Thought about this a bit.

Does such a strategy lead you to becoming top heavy in terms of who does the work? I mean, if the side is marking time until certain players become available, and covering those players with the very best, does this result in too much being left for too few?

The Eagles didn't really have too many key standouts yesterday - it was an all over team game. Meanwhile, we have a couple of players who stood out above the pack.

By playing a structure where Pavlich, Mundy, Sandilands and to a similar extent, Fyfe, are required to do the majority of the work, are we then exposed by teams who work harder around the ground?
