"It was billed as the most important Western Derby ever.

But in the end it was meaningless.

The Eagles had their sights set on Fremantle. Fremantle had their sights set on September – for three-and-a-half quarters at least.

These were two teams with disparate thirsts.

Fremantle, with top spot already (largely) in their keeping, simply had no good reason to throw everything into this Western Derby. So they didn’t.

On offer were four points, and the Carlton Draught Derby trophy.

A pleasant enough bauble, to be sure, but Ross Lyon has enough of them in Fremantle’s trophy cabinet.

It’s a premiership cup he truly hungers for.

Let’s not forget that in their last premiership year, the Eagles lost twice to Fremantle – the second of which, in round 21, was a brutally one-sided thumping.

The Eagles had bigger fish to fry. This year it was the Dockers who didn’t commit fully.

Fremantle is about more than bragging rights these days."

Not a bad write up at all in fairness, will probably check out that site in future, but I think that's what they're going for. I came in ready to be outraged, they got my traffic and a chance to show off their content, all good.

Wasn't meaningless, was massive getting a win, happened to be a big win against a team that's lost 2 all year, hugely proud. End of.

His argument is valid, but what's the purpose of the article if not a seriously impassioned defense of ones team.

"They have bigger fish to fry" is the biggest cop out excuse I've heard

YAWN.

Freo played their best 22 who were available and went all out in the second half trying to win that game. They lost because they didn't play as well. Too many miscommunications between their players, poor kicking efficiency, and too many turnovers. Getting tired of hearing that Freo tanked because they wanted to make Hawthorn travel west. That's bull. Freo's players are professionals and aren't going to half-ass it in order to lose, and if Lyon is going to tank a game, you're going to know it (i.e., their Round 23 match against St Kilda two years ago).

Haven't watch a Lyon presser for some time. Was smiling alot and didn't seem to care about the loss.

Was tearing shreds off the assistant coaches as he left the box at the end, and was still going when he made it to the field.

And to be fair to Freo supporters, I haven't seen many of them suggesting that they tanked to make Hawthorn travel in opening round of finals. They give their coaches and players more credit than to throw a game against a big rival. Most of the people I've seen accusing Freo of tanking are supporters of other clubs.

Obviously the author only means that it was meaningless for Freo, which it probably was. Meant plenty for us, since it gives us a shot at the top 2. Made even more blatant by making excuses for Freo losing, reminds me of the Richmond fan who kept on trying to make a point that we only won because his team was not at their best after their bye.
"As the Eagles piled on goal after goal, you knew the Dockers had missed the bus up Stirling Highway."
Who cares if an opponent isn't taking the game seriously, you can only play the team that's out there"
Disgustingly biased article. Best to ignore it.

To be fair there's more than a grain of truth in they article. This game meant far more to us than it did to them on much the same way as that derby in late 2006 (in reverse). When September comes this result will likely mean 2/5ths of **** all

That said there's a bit for freo to be concerned about from this game. Sandi dominated the ruck against a couple of 2nd string rucks one of whom injured his knee before half time and freo convincingly won the clearances as a result but lost the game

Against a seriously undersized defence their forwards couldn't capitalise and it was actually a small forward that was head and shoulders their most effective.

Their disposal was again sloppy, something they've got away with against lesser sides but it's been a factor in all 3 of their losses

Griffin was awful, Clarke is horribly out of form and sandi isn't getting younger - he should ask dean cox how quickly the end can come

Mcpharlin was badly missed no doubt but this year is probably his last so like sandi the reliance on an older player is troubling

Finally, in 2006 freo played that game ferociously from the start and the eagles players noticeably backed off yet today freo were still willing to try and hurt us so some of the intensity was there but they got beaten in effectiveness not necessarily intent

Hey it's secured a top 4 spot ...given us a chance at top 2

Meaningless ...what a croc of shit ...

If we had lost ....and bullies roll us next week (they are flying) we would be out of the top 4.

Meaningless ....I suggest the post author take a look at the afl ladder .....it's darn tight

Except Fremantle have been utterly pitiful for months on end now.

Should it surprise that Hawthorn smashed Fremantle, who got challenged by West Coast who then dispatched Fremantle with critical outs.

Par for course this season it seems. By definition every team we beat is crap according to the media apparently.

Noticed that. Everyone we beat seems to have an excuse.

The fact is there is definitely some warning signs for Freo in this game. Just like against Hawthorn and Richmond, Freo struggles against teams who can punish their defensive style with good kicking skills and aggressive ball movement.

They also have issues punishing teams for their mistakes and taking advantage when their team has the upper hand.

Maybe Freo didn't care about this game as much well then they better start caring real soon because finals is only weeks away. Might not be as easy as simply flicking a switch.
