Derek Percy died in custody in 2013, barking mad although some experts conflict claiming he played the system and having been linked to the deaths of nine children.

"They knew that his travels in the Navy gave him opportunity; he had been seen acting out his bizarre fantasies in his adolescence when he was known to be the town snowdropper; and he had motive, as penned in his disturbed fantasies.
"They also knew that most of these children had disappeared or were murdered at or near the beach. Derek Percy loved the beach. And he was an ace sailor.
"Everywhere that he went on family holidays or in the Navy, it seemed, children had either disappeared or were found murdered." - Debi Marshall

Percy was convicted of the murder of 12 year-old Yvonne Tuohy at Ski Beach, near Warneet in Victoria.

Linda Stilwell went missing near Melbourne's Luna Park in 1968.
A Victorian coroner found Percy caused her death.

At the time of the murders, Percy had been staying with his grandmother in Ryde, where the girls also lived.

The Beaumont children.
Percy and his father sailed in the annual Glenelg Regatta. Although Percy later admitted to being on Glenelg Beach twice, it could go no further because Percy said he couldn't remember anything else but apart from being there.

Simon Brook was only 3 years old.
Percy was stationed with the Navy in Sydney in 1968 when Simon Brook was abducted and murdered. Simon had reportedly been playing in the front yard of his home in Glebe and was last seen walking away with a thin-faced man. A coronial inquiry recommended Percy be referred to the DPP but Nicholas Cowdery determined there wasn't enough evidence for a conviction.

THE elderly mother of child killer Derek Percy allegedly admitted she "got rid of things" when police began investigating her son's crimes. (his notes)

Some of his written fantasies were identical to the horrific acts he is known to have carried out in killing Yvonne Tuohy, and what was done to three-year-old Simon Brook.

A huge cache of Percy's vile writings, drawings and newspaper clippings was found in a South Melbourne storage unit in 2007. It is unknown how he managed to move the material from prison to the storage facility.

  • 1948, SEPTEMBER 15 Born in Strathfield, NSW
  • 1954 Attends primary school, Missions Point, NSW
  • 1956 Family moves to Chelsea
  • 1958 Moves to Warrnambool
  • 1961 Moves to Mt Beauty
  • 1964 Seen slashing women's clothing. A suspect for "snow dropping".
  • 1965, JANUARY 11 Wanda Beach murders. Mt Beauty locals see resemblance between Percy and identikit of suspect.
  • 1965 Starts keeping graphic diary. School grades plummet. Fails year 11.
  • 1966 Moves to Khancoban. Molests young girl.
  • 1966, JANUARY 26 Beaumont children go missing. Mt Beauty residents recall Percy holidaying in Adelaide. Percy later says he was in Adelaide on the beach on the day.
  • 1966, SEPTEMBER 28 Allen Geoffrey Redston, 6, is abducted and murdered in Canberra. Percy later tells police he has holidayed in the capital but can’t recall details. In the days leading up to the murder there are reports of a teenager attempting to suffocate children in the area. The description fits Percy. Suspect rode a bike similar to Percy's and victim was bound with a tie similar to Mt Beauty school uniform tie.
  • 1967, NOVEMBER 25 Joins navy.
  • 1968, MARCH 9 Stationed in Sydney.
  • 1968, MAY 18 Simon Brook, 3, abducted in Glebe. Percy writes in his diary of abducting and murdering a three-year-old. The details in the diary match the fatal injuries inflicted on the victim.
  • 1968, AUGUST 5 Goes on 18 days’ leave from navy. Tells police he stays in Melbourne.
  • 1968, AUGUST 10 Linda Stilwell abducted from St Kilda foreshore. Percy on leave at the time. Had a map that was marked in the area she went missing and told police he was in the area that day.
  • 1969, APRIL 1 Stationed on the Cerberus.
  • 1969 Attempted abduction of a 12-year old girl on a bike near the Cerberus base. Victim later identifies Percy as the attacker.
  • 1969, JULY 27 Abducts and murders Yvonne Tuohy from Ski Beach. Arrested later that day. Police find his diary filled with violent sex fantasies.
  • 1970 Found not guilty of the Tuohy murder on the grounds of insanity. Jailed for life.
 
what a disgusting piece of filth I remember he was still paid his navy pension the whole time he was in jail which was a disgrace, even on his death bed he wouldn't admit to his crimes-should have been given a hard time in jail every day until he confessed or showed where bodies were

Percy's psychology was unique apparently which makes him interesting in the field but most of us would want to throw up listening to this.

Another victim, Shane Spiller who Percy also tried to abduct the day he took Yvonne Tuohy with a knife at her throat. Shane's wits had him cut through the bush to get details of Percy's car as he was speeding away with Yvonne later identifying it for police in the car park of the naval base. So horribly sad.

In 1970, Percy was convicted of Yvonne Tuohy’s murder but found not guilty by reason of insanity. Much later, psychiatrists would later find Percy was not mentally ill at all.

But it was too late by then for Shane Spiller, by age 14 had begun drinking and drifted away from school and his family.

Spiller developed serious drug and alcohol addictions and was never properly treated for a severe case of post traumatic stress disorder.

He believed Derek Percy would come after him and kill him.

Spiller ended up in the NSW South Coast town of Wyndham, where he slept with a baseball bat and cut a trapdoor into his living room floor to hide.

He would ask friends to jot down the registration numbers of cars in his street.

“He was the most paranoid person I’ve ever met,” a neighbour said.

“There was this overwhelming dark cloud over his life and he was basically self-medicating with drugs and alcohol.”

On September 9, 2002, he was seen leaving his two-room shack for the local store to collect his mail. He has not been seen alive since, nor have his remains been found.

I shake my head in disbelief, that he passed all the testing to join the Navy.

Yes! And the signs of his deviance was certainly showing even in his early teens.

The case hasnt been solved as such. There are a number of potential suspects. Also that reddit post above, only months ago, opens the possibility of another suspect or two (father and son).

By the way....child abductors/raoists/killers....turn on TV and an Aussie True Crime documentary on Derek Percy (1960s) convicted child killer and arguably linked to Wanda abd Beumont killings.

In the same country NSW, happened to wrb surf into Leslie Camilleri, convicted child killer, "Bega School Girl Killings" and murder of Prue Bird too.
 
Mods feel free to move my last couple of posts to a new thread about Derek Percy.

That TV show made it out like there was hardly any evidence linking Percy to multiple other high profile child killings, but this PDF file of a court document shows there was damning/obvious evidence that Percy was responsible for all those deaths....Wanda, Beaumont, and others

He was never convicted

He was found Not Guiilty of the murder on the Grounds Of Insanity

There has never been any evidence that would be accepted in a Court in regards to any similar offences of which he was accused.

He never admitted to any other offences.

In various sections in the DPP, Department of Justice and the Health Department there are probably still copies of his diaries in which he outlined his well constructed sexual fantasies, These diaries were explicit and were worse than the Journos even hint at, the stuff of nightmares

In all his years in custody he never availed himself of any psychiatric assistance or intervention other than annual reviews for the Adult Parole Board,

It was always believed he refused to engage with the Psychs because if he had, he would have had to admit to certail actions

Percy was very cunning and extremely intelligent. In the prison he had the job of someone who had total control of the inmates in his division, what cell they went in to, amenities, rosters etc.

Percy did speak to psychiatrists and psychologists incuding a Professor of Forensic Psychiatry Paul Mullen, none of whom ever got anything specific in relation to his crimes. Percy was fascinated with test cricket and had a compendious knowledge of the game, he'd talk about that.

Mullen described Percy's fantasies as obsessive, detailed and rigid and said that he carried this complex, sadistic fantasy life in a single stream from mid adolescence. It's this which likely contributed to anybody in the field who assessed him, being of the view he should never be released.
