Derm the blowhard

Which brings up something I have always wondered about. When a kid grows up supporting a team, but then plays for another team, who do they support when they retire. Dermie and Harf were fanatical Collingwood supporters when they were younger but now are Hawkds all the way because they played for them. Not sure if there is any conflicting emotions about who they are now supporting. The Ox was a Hawks supporter as a kid but now loves the Dee's.
The club they play for I suggest.
Peter McKenna loves Collingwood, barracked for Essendon
Said once "everything changed when I stepped into Collingwood"
KB was Footscray but now Richmond (though did desert them for decades when he cracked the sads)

But my favourite story ever, which can give us heart:

James Morrissey the freakish Hawthorn player was a mad Collingwood supporter pre his Hawks days.

But during his matches for Hawthorn when Collingwood was playing at the same time (which happened in those days) he used to check the scoreboard to see how Collingwood was going.

He is and will be my favourite Hawthorn player ever (do also respect Leigh Matthews).

Speaking of Leigh, he was asked who he supports after flags with Hawthorn, Collingwood, Brisvegas.

He said I guess you always really support the team you played for.

Surely Lethal is more than just a Lions man. Premiership player at the Hawks and premiership coach. He can't just be a Lion.
See my previous thread.
Leigh says he ultimately supports the team he played for.
Great coach for us

The problem with Lloyd is he sounds like that kid in class. You know, the one everyone wished was exempted from having to read out loud.
That's funny - I'm going use your line there, if that's ok.
Very good sir

I never got that either. I don't understand how you can support one club passionately for 15-20 years.

Play for another for 10, but then abandon the original team completely? I dunno, I don't see any scenario where I"m not barracking for Collingwood straight after retiring with an obvious soft spot/second team of the one I played for. Or vice versa.

I'd expect that guys like Derm and Harf to absolutely still love Collingwood, at LEAST as a second side. Because it obviously works both ways. How happy would you be to see Treloar win a flag with Collingwood but then retire and start supporting Carlton again?
Im guessing the reason it happens is because it's more invested / more skin in the game / more real for a player.
As much as we LOVE Collingwood, and we do, going and playing for a club somehow it's your investment your psyche becomes part of the club. In a way, I imagine tops the barracking.
Best I can come up with.

It's McAvaney I can't stand. The way he talks about players like they're his friends, "poppy" and "cyril". I'm not a violent man, but sometimes...
Now there is painful waiting to be released.
He is even WORSE to listen to if your team is losing.
His matey nonsense, he's perpetual self pleasuring, his gushing, his irrelevant statistics (the relevant ones are ok) his nauseating self indulgence, his bizarre Brownlow interviews, his obsessive Cyril obsession (yes I used a derivative of obsession twice)... Otherwise he's ok.

To be fair his love for horse racing is legitimate so I applaud him for that, and he knows his stuff

A moron that tries to sound intellectual by agonisingly detailing the minutia of every play and more often than not completely killing the next play talking over it.

Wrote an article a few years back saying Treloar will be the best of the GWS kids. I think he was helping them in a semi development role at the time.

Dermie is an excellent judge of footy talent in my book:thumbsu::cool:

Came across Dermie years ago at a bar in Bendigo. He even shouted a round for our group
Don't know how he comes across if you meet him on a regular basis but was good value that night. No arrogance at all

Derm sometimes used to serve behind the bar at The Lyric in Geelong in the early 90s. Always came across as I nice bloke.

I don't get all the hate towards Derm, he is a good character with a whole lot of football knowledge. Yes, he talks a bit of shit when he is commentating, but don't they all..
Dermie may be the nicest living human being and I don't doubt his football knowledge. I like commentators who call the game, who know the players' names and tell you what is happening. I find it very distracting when special comments people talk incessantly and ignore what is happening on field. Dermie and Darcy are the worst at talking endless drivel. Special comments should be short and sharp.

See, the world sees thing through different eyes. I can't stand Bruce either. When I hear him commentating all I seem to hear is Bruce playing out sexual fantasies live on air, that and his constant Freudian slips. "ohhhh, I'd love to get tackled by him, what do you think Dennis?", "you're on your own there Bruce"...
Bruce's twaddle is embarrassing.
I often hit mute when he is commentating.
He is worse with Horses and even worse still with anything Olympic.

Latest one today, "it's the first time in 26 years Collingwood are playing interstate in round one". Yet we opened our last season we opened our season playing at the Gabba
