Prepared to back in the club on this one.
We all know how good Dermie was as a player and has obviously demonstrated something to those who know, over the years which suggests he can pass that on as a coach.
Only pity is that Paddy did not get the benefit of this type of coaching when he started.

the response to this from some of the 'st kilda fans' is absolutely pathetic.

On one hand, the st kilda community are wanting action from the club due to a poor 2018 campaign. one dimensional action such as 'sack richo'. The opposite has happened, and the administration have made many appointments that break the mould of how the typical st kilda would have handled the situation and we throw our hands up because he was part of the enemy and had "potshots" at our club.

wow - what a losing, victim mentality.

These are fantastic moves being made by our current administration, well beyond the boundaries of normal that we as fans are used to from this club. I applaud it, i think its fantastic and i am hoping like hell it has the desired results.

It also shows those superstars who are yet to sign (Gresham/Billings etc) and those potential FA (Coniglio etc) that we will move heaven and earth to get the formula right.

All of that bodes well for securing contract renewal and/or jagging a FA star....

:thumbs up: from me..

What can he offer the players and club that any other number of commentators can't.
Even as a commentatot he's very poor.

Experience both as a player but also as a football director plus coach/tutor/mentor like he has been doing for most of his post-playing career?
Our opinions of him as a commentator are irrelevant.
I was just asking if you were basing that statement on anything or not.

I thought the appointment of Billy Slater was brilliant. Champion sportsman and leader on and off the field. Had played at the highest level only months prior to joining the team. As compared to Brereton.

Not sure if it’s been said but Derm in RWB is 30 odd years overdue.

He would have been a Saint in the early 80’s if the VFL hadn’t conspired with Hawthorn to take the peninsula zone from us.

Leigh Matthews as well.

There was a solid handful from that zone who played in the Hawks golden period. We even had one of them signed the night before in preparation.

Anyone hear him of Fox tonight after our game. Said he's "just checking us out"
Yeh, he was trying to downplay his involvement in the club. His colleagues were getting a bit carried away with trying to get him to be that arrogent 'it was all me' guy we all seen him as, but he wasnt playing along.
First session was probably more of an icebreaker anyway to build connection with the group, but it did show footage of him running a leading pattern later on. Its definately more than just checking out.

One training session .
1 win.
100% strike rate.:drunk:

Plus he faarrking hates Essendrug so hes not all bad:thumbsu: .

Well Dermi's timing on joing theSaints is impecaable

You took this the wrong way.

What he was clearly talking about was it was only his first session with the playing group and as such all he did was check out the players that he is now to teach (ie assessing where they were individually at and what they each needed to be shown) and that he had not yet taught them anything yet.

Not sure if it was in that session, or a another when he was talking on radio, but Membrey was a player he mentioned for example where he stated that he was very good, but where he knew he could teach him some things to improve him.

I'm no champion FF but even I could see Paddy seriously lacked in forward craft. He's good at timing his leads and getting the jump on his defender but that's almost it. No big chest pushes before leading, poor body work most of the time (he looks much, much better when he goes an early hip bump or harder early contact rather than getting drawn into a grapple/wrestle). He can't even protect the drop enough to outmark caleb daniel.

But one of the best forward craft specialists I've seen is right in our backyard and we're not making any use of him.. fella called Milne. His body work and positioning was as good as it gets, constantly outmarking much bigger opponents. We should definitely have him down at the club in a part time capacity..
I think he has been secreting teaching Lonie how piss the opposition off.

Also, I think this is the first time the club has gotten a specialist outside the club to work on forward “Craft”

Frustrating that it’s taking so long, because someone like Paddy could have really used this earlier.
Paddys problem was getting knocked out all the time , anyway hope the lad is doing ok

Who was our fwds coach after Hamill took over vfl? Ratten? Or does he still do it?
There's already improvement in the fwd half before Dermi arrived.
Watch em all come out and go how much we've improved up fwd, later this year. Must be Dermi.
This is a nothing signing. I don't see what he could offer that others can't.
He's on record for hating on us in the past.

I have been following this club for a long time as many have, but this post hits the nail on the head as to why I see this move up the ladder differently. This does not feel like 2004 when we turned the corner.

Derm says to McCartin, "When I was your age (23 years, 1 day, just prior to Round 21, 1987), I'd played 107 games (including 15 finals and 4 GFs), taken 613 marks, and kicked 232 goals already, as a 186cm, 89kg CHF".

McCartin goes to Derm, "who are you again?"

Derm gives a signed jumper and thesis on how to strut like a peacock, McCartin goes for a nap.

Paddys problem was getting knocked out all the time , anyway hope the lad is doing ok

There are people who call him a poor forward, as if almost 10 concussions hold no bearing to limiting anything and the bloke has never contested marked anything nor kicked 3 in less than a half of footy.

Things went right and we supplant him into this Saints, there's a growing efforts to get things right. Paddy just needs to take care of Paddy at this stage, especially if he's still symptomatic in the here and now.

Richo said today that it was Ratten who identified a need for a coach to focus on 'forward craft' of our young forwards. To me it is a sign of significant maturity of the coaching staff that they are able to identify needs, and can recognise when they aren't the best people to fill them. Remember that Ratten was a brand new coach at the club who was assigned the forward line. And he immediately says 'I can't do this alone, we need another part time coach to focus on a different aspect'.

Excellent point! Well said!
