Suggesting that Derm has a good footy brain isn't really laughable, he would be the best special comments man IMO if not for what Atley described, **** he waffles on wayyy too much and for way too long. Also has a touch of the Jason Dunstalls in that he can be overly negative and usually picks something trivial to bitch about for the game.

i'd agree with this. derm know his footy.... but his smug as **** persona and general waffling is what makes him near impossible to listen to.

i didn't mind him for a while but over the last 2-3 years he has gone downhill very fast.

There's a whole thread dedicated to him on the Eagles board, has nothing but open disdain for West Coast but keeps getting picked to commentate on our home games. He's a product of the poor standards of footy commentating, bit like a reserves player being forced into the first team because everyone else is crap. It's time to stop giving these gigs to former players, surely there are heaps of people out there with Journalism/Media degrees who could do the job better then the current rabble.

check out american sports journalists. very few former players. very high quality.

former player can give you an interesting insight, but there are guys who have literally spent thousands of hours watching and an analyzing a sport who know whats going.

I can't come up with any. What is it with Aussie Rules and ****stick commentators? The whole "put on a show" commentary philosophy drives me mad, especially since every Essendon game seems to be commentated by Brian ****ing Taylor.

But Dermott is a rare breed. His pursed-lip smug self-satisfied pseudo-intellectual smarmy verbose grandiose bullshit is very, very hard to listen to

This man can ruin even the most entertaining game with his pointless and egotistical background blabber. So sick of his voice during games. Does anyone else think he's a complete joke of a commentator?

His unintended comedy routines aren't bad. Did anyone catch his interview with Geelong's Alan "Bundy" Christensen about 6 weeks ago? Dermie spent some 10 minutes asking / telling Bundy how difficult it must be for an indigenous player to leave his home, family and friends in the Northern Territory and how difficult it must be to adapt to life in the City. He then asked Bundy was that how he saw it, to which Bundy responded words to the effect, "Not really. I'm from Lara!" It was golden, and only a Dermott Brereton could have gone on like he did loving the sound of his voice....

Agreed. I tend not to whinge too much, I actually don't have much of a problem with many commentators at all. I come on here and see people whining their arses off about virtually every single commentator, at different times. It just has me scratching my head, it's like 'are you watching the game, or sitting there focusing on everything the commentators are saying so you can pick the shit out of them?'

All that said, Taylor is worse than the rest of them put together...

Derm on League Teams is the worst. It's purely amateur hour on there. He just doesn't have a clue. Like, using this weekend for example, he'll start with 'now it's gonna be a huge game this Friday night Parko, between the, uhh, *looks at sheet of paper* oh yes the Crows and the uh, *looks again* and the Hawks! I wonder how much of the criticism runs deep due to hatred in playing days. I can't stand individuals from other clubs too. e.g. Matthew Lloyd, Tom Harley to name but two. Being objective Dermie is sometimes condescending to the listener, a bit like he is coaching U14's but I will say one thing he watches a lot of footy, is up to speed with the nuances of the game. If he stops trying to sound intelligent and just call it how it is more often, he wont get in a tangle and his insightfulness will shine through and elevate him above the very mediocre pack.

Is that the same guy who thinks it's outrageous and unacceptable for a Victorian based team to travel interstate 2 weeks in a row in the finals?

As for Derm, I've always quite liked his commentary. Don't know why, just do.

Dermott would be the bottom tier of commentators - with Hutchy, Dwayne, Darcy and Harley.

To use some American terms the television coverage has got the balance of play-by-play commentators and colour commentators out of whack. We rarely get proper play-by-play commentary on the television any more, they're all just trumped up obnoxious personalities.

God help you if you don't know all the players names because the commentators sure don't these days. Unless a player has finished in the top 10 of your clubs best and fairest or won a premiership in the last 5 years these idiots will mix them up and get them wrong with alarming regularity.

The other thing that shits me is the fact that they're all ex players. As has been stated previously being decent at playing the game is no indication of your ability to call it, and they all bring the biases they held from their playing days. They barrack for their old team, and if your team was struggling for the majority of their playing career they'll baulk at giving you any credibility or respect when you're doing well.
