Just watching the prelim final in 2002, Brisbane v Port. Dessie has 28 touches and 3 goals and its only the 3rd quarter. No wonder our expectations were high. I'm a fan of Des, but he hasn't often looked that dangerous for us. I know we shouldn't judge him against that season, but he really should be hitting his prime now, age wise

i really think des headland is one of the most overrated players at the Dockers. des holiday headland lacks speed or fails to show it and i dont think he does enough hard yards to warrent his place in the side

it was one of his best games for the year
21 kicks 02 season ave 14 last year 13
9 marks '' '' 7 5
12 h\b '' '' 5 4
33 poss " " 19 17
3 goals 1 1
4 tackles 2 2
not much difference in the two season averages

try again
that game 21 kicks 9 marks 12 handballs 33 pos 3 goals 4 takles
season ave14 kicks 7 marks 5 handballs 19 pos 1 goal 2 tack
06 ave 13 kicks 5 marks 4 handballs 17 poss 1 goal 2 tack

Can someone do one of those statistical comparisons between Schammer and Des over those last two seasons. I can't find the site that does this.

Seen a few people bag McManus on a few threads. Think those people should check out the stats for the last 2 years and compare macca to them... You would be suprised by what you see!

Well because he has heaps more natural ability, more pace, and is 5 years younger.
So you take that into account, but choose to ignore the fact that Macca is played through the midfield a hell of a lot more than Headland.

Would you rather Headland start in at center bounces and give the handball out to Macca coming off the square to move it forward?

That way Macca would have more kicks and Headland more handballs (and overall possessions), which is the opposite of the way it has been in the first two rounds.

Is that really what you are suggesting?

I'm saying judge the players on what they do each week and not some perceived worth.

If Des plays shyte then he plays shyte...and I have gone off at him in the pre-season too.
However in the last 2 weeks he has been a solid if not spectacular performer and he's still the whipping boy.

I will agree, that everyone sees the game differently, and I have on occasion got a little shirty with someone who has questioned why I am critical of certain players.

But at the moment people are loading Des into the gun and he has been nowhere near the worst...He's just a convenient head to kick.

So in essence, just follow my lead and only be critical of players when I am and you'll be ok. :D ;)

Why is there an impression that Macca is slow. Far from it, I think hes one of the better runners going around, just sometimes his decision making skills take a while to catch up. Hes also a ball magnet who gets in and under, I would expect him to have plenty more ball than Des. I tipped Dessie for the Brownlow this year out of hope too.:o

Most people would given their respective roles in the team.

However, in the middle of Des bagging frenzy it seems the fact that Macca has averaged 6 more handballs a game in the first two rounds (although Des has averaged 4 more kicks per game) is proof enough for some folk that Des is flailing.

It beats me.

Scham, why else would you have MacManus in the team apart from his ability to get the ball heaps? Headland is in the team because of his ability to deliver the ball. Both do just fine. MacManus has shown a fantastic ability to address his kicking weaknesses too, and now rarely kicks out of bounds on the full. But his main weapon is his aggression at the ball.

Macca spends most of his time out on the wing, as does Des. I feel they would have equal opportunity as each other to get the ball.

Yes and Des's main weapon is his pace and ability to break the lines. He's in the team to recieve and therefore has plenty of opportunities (if he works hard enough) to rack up stats far in excess of Macca.

Anyway, that's just my opinion. its fired a few people up, some of whom put me in the Headland bashing group from the last two weeks, but this statement about his and Macca's stats are my first comment on Headland this season. I didn't mean it to be a tee off at Des, just an observation after someone else brought up the comparison, that's all.

For what its worth I haven't rated Des in our top players for rounds one or two, but neither have I thought he was in our worst 5 or 6 for either week.

Des headland has been an overwhelming disappointment, and his next contract offer will reflect that, he is payed so highly and to never have been in the top ten in the best and fairest (the point system is given by the coaches by the way) is just not good enough. i cant stand the fact that he keeps going to the west australian saying that he needs to stand up, that he needs to deliver and that he needs to repay the faith the coaches have shown him, only to see him disappointing us all again. either we need to cut our losses with him and trade him, or he needs a significantly improved performance, the other option is that he plays for a hell of a lot less. And by the way, you can never question mcmanus' endeavour, can you say the same about headland? no!
