Can anyone tell me who has built their own website, which web hosting provider did you use and why?

telstra bigpond seem to be pretty good for domain hosting.

I just did mine using Microsoft Front Page & then transferred the html code into Geocities.

I hate geocities
If you really need a website get a domain and get it hosted otherwise your going to make a crappy popup infested annoyance rather than a website. There's a couple of good free places you can get hosted but they are mostly subject specific eg rpggamers.net would host your site, with a few limits of course, but it would have to be an RPG game oriented site.

*500 Meg storage
*Domain name
*300 email accounts
*30GB bandwidth per month
*2 SQL databases
*FTP Access
etc.

Have found it very reliable, and will use the same place again next year when the Flame's new design is out.

The two sites that I have made using Frontpage (and a great book called 'How to use Frontpage in 24 Hours' - you can tell the kind of sites they are ) are currently on the web through our OptusNet Cable service. 5 email addresses and webspace (have no idea the size, but it is 54.95 a month.

My own company, www.Nameplace.com.au , has a number of different options.

Packages start at $A 8.95 per month (50MB disk space) and all include free domain name(s) with 12 months hosting.

All have unlimited e-mail accounts (POP3 and forwarders), unlimited FTP accounts, unlimited sub-domains, mailing list software, visitor stats software and so on.

If anyone is interested I can provide the full list, or it will be on the site within a week.

Places like ipowerweb are able to offer 30GB bandwidth because they know very few people will use even a fraction of it. If everyone on their plans used the full 30GB every month they would be in a little bit of trouble.

For my site - http://tigers-edge.tk I have not given anyone a single cent. Except that I have OptusNet Cable internet and Microsoft Frontpage.

Same as Happy_in_Hell except I have 3 GIG. $64.95 a month I think. Fantasic service the Optus services.

thats ok i guess. but i use netspace asdl cable and its $69.95 per month for 6gig download limit. so optus' offer seems to be pretty lame in comparison to that.

Had a look at that one, straight away found a hidden cost.
Seems you have to register your domain name with their choice of company which costs $US35 for one year. Not only this but you have to pay for 2 years at once US$70. This has already made the plan a lot less appealing. I wonder if there are anymore hidden costs.

The one I use costs me $US 13.45 per three months, and gives me 100MB storage, 3GB of transfer per month, 30 POP3 Mailboxes, unlimited email aliases, 5 FTP Users and 1 mySQL Database.

Doesn't restrict where you get your domain name from either (mine costs $US 7.95 per year).

I just use my ISP's free hosting that is included in my account. I only get 10meg, but that's all I need. I don't host any video or other rich media stuff.

No banners, so i'm not complaining.

For domains, I'm with iPrimus. I pay i think $15US a year for foo-fighters.net
