Trade Requested Deven Robertson - Requested a trade to the West Coast

Well yeah - he ain't coming to the Eagles?

What's your point?

I don't doubt the club is trying, but Robertson has made it clear he is open to moving to Victoria, where he will find at least one middle of the pack suitor, probably more (think Carlton, Melbourne, Essendon).

All trump the prospect of starting fresh at rock bottom - especially when your main card to play is 'I couldn't crack the best but I can probably play for the rest'.

Oops

couldn’t be a less exciting trade in if we tried. Absolute nothing burger, and it says more about how bad we are that he’ll actually get a game
It’ll be a 2 for 1 deal now. It’s like North getting Logue and Tucker from Freo with charity picks and Robertson is Tucker.

It wasn't meant as an insulted as the Lions poster took it. Every club needs role players. Jack Graham would've been that for us this year. He would've played every game but hes not a needle mover and would've taken games off a kid. That's a list clogger.
No that’s a role player. No team has 23 ‘needle movers’ in a team.

Plenty of non ‘needle movers’ have turned into ‘needle movers’ with opportunity. Others have turned out to be list cloggers of their contracts were to long.

Dev is 24yo and potentially has plenty of good afl footy left if he is up to the level. He will now get his chance at playing the position he is suited to and we will find out.

The kids will play if they deserve it just like at any other bottom 4 sides.

Robertson has really never played his preferred position (inside mid) at AFL level. Whenever he's come in, it's usually as a half forward or occasionally the wing.

He has his limitations (and his kicking is a significant one) but he's also dominated at VFL level as an inside mid.

Will be interesting to see how he goes if he gets games at WC.

No, but for teams down the bottom like ours they're list cloggers. Better off getting games into a kid rather than a battler who cant kick.

If he goes to the Eagles you will get a solid midfielder for basically a token pick.
He won't hurt your list and comes from a very disciplined club with a good culture.

Play him pure midfield until your younger players get another preseason and year under their belt.
it is not like you are going to jump into the 8 next year but maybe the following years.
The coaches will know soon enough if he can't hold that position and drop him to the twos

Dev is a much better get than a late speculation draft pick that usually don't make the grade.

It is hard to break into this Lions midfield of Neale, Dunkley, McCluggage, Will Ashcroft, Zac Bailey, Cam Rayner with wings of Jarrod Berry and Levi Ashcroft.

Devs VFL stats for those interested

I'd imagine the Lions just delist him at this point. At most he gets them a future 4th. I would have thought it would be easy enough just to throw him in the Starcevich trade

I suspect we'll just do whatever WC want us to do with him. If they want us to delist him to take him as a rookie, we'll do that.

6 years in the system and yet to reach 50 games. That's so much missed development. Not saying he can't make it, but he needs to basically get 23 games into him next year to even catch up.

Put it this way, from that cohort Rowell, Anderson, Jackson, Ash, Serong, Green, Pickett, Bergman, Rivers, Warner and Frederick have all played 100+, and Stephens, Young, Flanders, Day, Weightman, Georgiades, SDK, Riccardi and Burnes have played 75+. Anderson and Serong could reach 150 next year!

I don't expect anyone from the 2019 draft class outside that list to be anything better than C/D grade players.

Considering Deven just played in a grand final in 2023, it was natural for him to believe he's in a position to become best 22 for Lions next year. He extended with us for 2 years rather than looking elsewhere. Deven was injured a lot in 2024 though (right from pre-season) which set him back a bit and others went past him during that time.

In hindsight, it was a mistake for him to extend then knowing Will Ashcroft is due to return from ACL in 2024 and Levi Ashcroft / Sam Marshall will come in at the end of 2024. It diminished his chances a fair bit and he went back even further in the pecking order in 2025 - when Levi became a best 22 player along with Marshall.

I don’t think anyone is expecting Dev to be an A or B grader

Correct. He just needs to be a solid B-grade type who enables the likes of Reid and Hewett to do their thing.

If he could get to a similar level as Redden, that would be huge. I doubt he will but just needs to play the same kind of game.

It's a shame really. At the end of 2023 he's a 41 gamer who'd just played in a GF. He absolutely could have been given the right environment.

Two years later, he's delisted for nothing. His manager needs to take a long hard look.

Didn't he decide to stay after his gf was saved from anaphylactic shock at the Lions' B+F?

He should've taken a 3 or 4 year offer from West Coast at the end of 2023. His best opportunity to play 22 games for 2-3 years straight in midfield.

Dev's main chances as far as Lions 22 was playing as a defensive mid (when our first choices are unavailable for some reason) or pressure forward. Wing to a lesser extent. We don't use wing that much in our game plan so it's a bit thankless running end to end and being available as relief kick for defense.

Once Lohmann came in to take over the forward spot and Will Ashcroft returned from ACL in 2024 - there was not much left for Dev. I read somewhere he asked for a trade that off-season but it didn't work out between West Coast and Lions then.

He almost was traded in 2023 then changed his mind at the last minute.

Tried again in 2024 but Lions wanted a 2nd rounder. Which landed the Eagles Shanahan.

Finally out of contract again on 2025 he gets where he should have been two years ago.

Wasn't it the end of the 23 or 24 season he walked into the interview fully intending to tell Fagan he wanted to head to WC, only to be convinced to sign on again.
Be interesting to know what they promised him to change his mind.
