Traded Devon Smith [traded to Essendon]

When a club commits to a player then they have a responsibility to bring him to the club, That usually means they over pay slightly and they need to do that to keep the opposition club happy and they will need to deal in future.

#6 + 2017 2nd rounder for Prestia+2016 2nd rounder was overs last year but Richmond payed it, But as things turned out withe where Richmond finished it ended up becoming #6+#35+#64 for Prestia+Caddy+Graham

But the Buyer needs to satisfy the seller
In this case it looks like the buyer was actually gws competing with gcs to buy 11. Seems like it might have been reverse bidding going on. Trade values smith at high 40s, although if there is a player wanted in the draft by gws who is realistic at 11 and not at 24, it could be good for both.

I reckon Essendon will regret this in time.

Bonar or Brayshaw would of been perfect for their midfield.

Instead they got another half forward, which they havean abundance of.
What?

This is just silly.

Smith has proven that he can play midfield and forward to a high standard in the AFL.

We have Fantasia and Tippa who can also play midfield and forward.

Smith gives us a starting midfielder who can rotate through the forward line.

He is absolutely perfect for the kind of footy we want to play.

Good trade for Essendon. Although I still wonder if Smith is the type of player that fills a need for them.

I agree. Good trade, good deal, good player. But he's not an inside mid. That said, there are no hard inside mids on the table at the moment and if there were I'm pretty confident Dodo would be all over it.

Perhaps Essendon relying on the old "get the best players you can, and then worry about positions".

Worked for Richmond this year!

If Essendon can still take on Saad and Stringer, may offer them the flexibility of moving others deeper inside... like Merrett.

Yep. Or a Hunter Clark or Constable.

For them, Pick 11 was perfect to land a bigger midfielder they actually need to complement their very good youth core.

They're rushing imo.

Forget about Saad. Throw all our chips into Stringer, and there is our big bodied, don't argue midfielder. Our hierarchy already told him they're going to work his arse off for 2018.

I could be wrong but pretty sure he held both Betts and Greene goaless earlier this year. If not goaless he definitely kept the quiet.
Betts kicked 3 against Gold Coast and Greene 5.

Not just about youth core. Can't develop the youth over the next 3-4 years and lose out on Hurley, Hooker and a few others right in their premiership age window.

I think Essendon are trying to putty fill a few roles so a few of the older blokes don't go stale in the process. Do I agree with them? I don't even know to be honest. But I am pretty sure that's what they're doing.

Can possibly trade two late picks for an early first pick to go after Stringer again. And then we have one pick left to go after Saad. Something along those lines.

If Essendon can pick up Smith and Saad there's every chance Stringer pushes harder to come to a club that all of a sudden has some great players and prospects.

Sorry, I didn't realise that you were at the trade table with them, here I was going by the opinions of those in the know.
How about you open the other eye.
Well done to them on this occasion but please don't embarrass yourself by pissing out the window and expecting people to believe it's raining. Contrary to what you may believe, popular opinion is that they are far from angels to deal with.
In fairness to Essendon, Buckenara said that Kevin Sheedy was the main problem when it came to dealing with Essendon. How long has it been since he coached the Bombers?

Stewart, Melksham, Hibbard and now Smith all seemed to have gone through smoothly.
Carlisle and Ryder caused a bit of angst, but I think that had more to do with the other clubs than the Bombers.

But yes, they still have to sort out Saad and Stringer, so I'll keep judgement until next Thursday afternoon.

It has improved so much since the Flash Mob in 2013!!! That was rock bottom.

Has it? Has it improved? Thank you for being kind :)

Is this the deal?

https://www.draftguru.com.au/pick-value-calculator#Smith,24,33|11,47

GWS's second this year is 33 so assume it's the same next year. Essendon's third this year is 47 so assume it's the same next year.

In that case it values Smith on draft points at the equivalent of pick 49?

Seems a fantastic deal for Essendon to get two decent second rounders for a mid first rounder and a third rounder - with a player thrown in.
I think you miss our main motivation though. We haven't got a first round pick and want to get into the draft early. Exoect us to try and rise higher by trading what we get for Kennedy and Wilson, it's consistent with what we usually do.
