Traded Devon Smith [traded to Essendon]

What?

This is just silly.

Smith has proven that he can play midfield and forward to a high standard in the AFL.

We have Fantasia and Tippa who can also play midfield and forward.

Smith gives us a starting midfielder who can rotate through the forward line.

He is absolutely perfect for the kind of footy we want to play.

You made my point, you've got Tippa and Fantasia, now Smith, none of which are ball winners in anyones world.

Heppell isn't a great inside ball winner, Merrett isn't either, Zaha isn't one or the other and Parish is trending towards being like the others as well. You've lost Jobe, Kelly etc over the last few years and need a genuine gun ball winner at the coalface to compliment the others, there's genuinely going to be 4 really good ones available at #11.

Could of knocked off best available/big need at the same time, which doesn't always happen int he first round of the draft.

Great deal. Not quite sure why GWS did it, but given they (and Sydney) have done those kind of deals for other clubs, I'm glad to be on the receiving end for once. Smith should be able to help out defensively in the midfield, adds pace and good kicking. Although we will be a bunch of short arses, especially if McGrath moves into the midfield with Saad replacing him.

On other deals, surely Saad is now #24, and hopefully we can turn GWS's future second + #28 into a pick in the #15 to #18 range for Stringer. If Richmond think Naish will go after their picks, then switching #17 for #28 (points for Naish) and GWS's future second (more picks in the 2018 SUPERdraft) could be a go. Then #17 for Stringer.

Pretty close to what I've been thinking too. Just a lot of moving parts and thus a lot of risk if it doesn't fall in to place.

Am a little torn not getting a good midfielder this draft, but maybe they're thinking to get a couple in the next one which is to be a quality draft.

DapperJong i am too busy with work to read back. What was the trade in the end?

PS, I am going to miss my boy.

Devon Smith, #24 and 2018 second round pick (GWS) for #11 and 2018 third round pick (Essendon)

so smith and 2 2nd rounders for 11 and future 3rd

Yep. Or a Hunter Clark or Constable.

For them, Pick 11 was perfect to land a bigger midfielder they actually need to complement their very good youth core.

They're rushing imo.

I disagree. We were never going to keep pick 11 since we had three good players nominate us. I would MUCH rather three best 22 upgrades instead of hoping pick 11 and later picks come good. Especially since it is considered a shallow draft.
Once it was clear there was no big bodied mids on the market, we have looked at getting value upgrades. And it has worked very well imo. Smith was a bargin.

FWIW both Dodoro and Worsfold have already indicated that they see him as predominantly a midfielder who will have stints up forward rather than the other way around.

No surprises really. GWS have a lack of small forwards and a wealth of midfield talent whereas we are more the other way around.

I think we will improve considerably just by getting some more good players into our team. I understand the argument about not addressing our biggest weakness but as in most sports - its far easier to deal with one weakness than it is a whole bunch of weaknesses.

on the contrary
We have young inside mids. just too young.
Langford, Begley, Laverde, Clarke - all capable. all good sizes too.
each one of them is yet to hit 22 though.

Langford will come in for Watson.
Smith will upgrade Colyer
Saad replaces Kelly and Stringer replaces Green if we get those deals done.
