The World Health Organisation's PR people are clowns. First they whip up hysteria over H1N1 flu in 2009, making it sound like the Black Death. They could not have blown it more out of proportion - 2009 turned out to be a stock-standard flu year in terms of deaths. Now they have named a dictator, who has allowed the health system in his country to collapse and has an extremely poor human rights record as a Goodwill Ambassador.

This sends the wrong message to the international community and is utterly disgraceful.

It was a unilateral appointment by the new African head of the WHO which most opposed. Even the WHO's own agencies have released reports condemning the state of Zimbabwe's health system under Mugabe.

It's comparable to the 'captain's pick' of PM Tony Abbott when he gave Prince Phillip a knighthood - hopelessly out of touch decision by a clueless leader.

It shouldn't take away from the good work that the WHO, as an organisation, does for global health. The ambassador role is ceremonial anyway.

H1N1 killed hundreds of thousands around the world. The 'over-reaction' by the WHO probably saved more lives and if left to spread it could have been similar to the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 which killed millions.

Claims that it was 'blown out of proportion' have been largely dispelled by further studies of the H1N1 pandemic. Initial estimates of the death toll were confined to just laboratory-confirmed cases of deaths by H1N1 and did not count mostly those who died in third world areas.

Right up there with Obama winning the Nobel peace prize after what he did to Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Honduras & Pakistan.

Our so-called authorities have lost all credibility whatsoever.

Mugabe is a racist. tribal, mass-murdering piece of s**t.

This is the height of stupidity. I'm tipping this shameful decision will be reversed due to the justifiable outrage already mounting.

Two dozen organisations, including the World Heart Federation, Action Against Smoking and Cancer Research UK, released a statement slamming the appointment, saying health officials were “shocked and deeply concerned” and citing his “long track record of human rights violations”.

Obama was awarded the Peace Prize before what happened in the countries you listed, but I agree it was a baffling decision.

Odd decision.
Not that odd considering Mugabe offered asylum to Ethiopia's president of the late 80's (convicted of genocide, still living in Harare). Ethiopia also helped Mugabe during the ethnic cleansing of white folk.

Director-General of the WHO is Ethiopian so it makes sense to some degree.

Good bye and Good riddance.
30 odd years too late.

gutted with what zimbabwe became post 1980.

before 1980, Zimbabwe/Rhodesia was a food basket that made money exporting food to neighboring african countires. Post 1980, a cesspool full of horrible leadership and corruption

Yep, British colonialism may not have been good, but what followed was sometimes just plain despicable.

A lawyer locked up for 11 years for being right about human rights.

And this is what you guys think of him?

A victim of European genocide force-fed a religion and education, brought up believing he was sub human for being black.

And this is what you say of him?

Your opinions are a reflection of you,, not him.

When did you go all hardcore on the identity politics?

Truth is only hardore to those who live in a lie.

The British sas conducted patrols of border regions as part of determined effort to destabilise mugabe from the moment he came to power. Supported rebels against democracy.

What was done to Zimbabwe was why Mandela and tutu seeked reconcilation and assimilation of all races.

All those things mugabe is being slandered for in this thread, by key board warriors, many whose opinion is driven by racism, wouldn't of happened if zimbabwe was left alone when democracy happened.

Mugabe brought democracy to the slaves.

But then south Africa would of fallen sooner.

British did the same in Kenya, the moment they knew the colony was lost, they wrecked the place

Wow. Full-blown.

Mugabe destroyed his country for personal power.

If he was so dedicated to his people, why was he buying fleets of luxury cars? Why was he killing his country's agricultural industry?

So you're saying it doesn't matter who does what, it only Matters when one of our victims does it, only then its wrong?

To understand Mugabe, one must understand the situations that lead to a such a man.

One of the people Most directly responsible for the suffering that lead to mugabe and what once was a democratic movement, is still in power and has never been held accountable.

If we truly want to avoid more people like Mugabe, we need to be open.

Look at her now, still doing what the elite of England want her to, subversion of democracy. Her son Prince Andrew implicated visiting rape Islands run by Epstein. Implicated in the apparant murder of the next Kings mother. Where do you think she got alot of diamonds from? From white owned mines using Slavery, Slavery that mugabe put an end to.
