Jack Martin has been an excellent addition to Geelong as a small forward and it begs the question as to why Carlton got rid of him in the first place especially when Carlton's small forward stocks have been diabolical for years, and it stems back to Mick Malthouse getting rid of Betts, Garlett and Yarran who were more than handy in the forward line and quite dangerous when on song. Perhaps if Carlton had quality small forwards to compliment Curnow and McKay they might have been able to contend for a premiership during 2022-2024 which was Carlton's best 3 year period of the 21st century as it's the only time Carlton have been able to string together 3 consecutive seasons with a positive win loss ratio since the turn of the century, and we saw how dangerous Richmond were from 2017-2020 with their mosquito fleet forward line so I can't help but feel as though Carlton make a mistake in getting rid of Jack Martin what are your thoughts?

He looked awful at Carlton considering the potential shown at the Suns. Not the only player to look completely different after leaving. Kennedy at the Bulldogs. A change of scenery was the smart move by Martin and it turns out to have been a smart move by Geelong to pick him up.

Jack Martin has persistent calf issues at Carlton and was substantially limited.

Matt Kennedy played well at Carlton but we had too many slow mids (still do).

In general Carlton has consistently failed to get the best out of players due to fitness issues or poor list balance

He wasn’t poor at Carlton at all. In fact he was one of our best and most important players when we played our best football.

His problem was he could never get consistently fit and was always injured. At the time I thought it was a Jack problem, hindsight suggests he was poorly managed. Geelong have him humming now.

Jack has been a great pick up for Geelong, but there is still a massive question mark over his ability to play out a full season. I hope it works for him, like it worked for Lincoln McCarthy at the Lions, who had persistent soft tissue injuries at Geelong.

He's been a handy pick up, especially given we are now playing without Miers and Stengle - while Close is having form or fitness issues too.

Started his time as a Cat with some half back and wing games before settling up forward. 17 goals and 12 goal assists @ 12.5 disposals average in 12 games since then.

Jack Martin was stuck in a continual loop of:

1. Getting injured
2. 3-4 weeks off
3. Rushed back early, plays badly for a few weeks
4. Starts playing ok - then cops an innocuous injury

At most other clubs he'd be given longer to recovery, have his minutes managed and not be expected to play outside of his role. I feel at Geelong he hasn't suffered from being the man - he's just playing solid footy and doing his job each week.

Was huge in that finals series in 2023. Don't think we will ever see the best of him but it's massive that he's out there and playing.

Fair effort.

No. Because with the way they managed his body, he would’ve been lucky to play 8 games a season.

Good, smart player. But injury riddled and those injuries were poorly managed by a club that has had a history of carrying injury prone players

Woweee.

2022 missed finals
2023 finished 5th with 13 wins
2024 finished 8th with 13 wins

And that is their best run in more than 25 years 🤣🤣
