Did Essendon make a mistake by sacking Kevin Sheedy?

Sheedy had had his time as coach and by 2007 he was about 2 years past it.
He evolved the game with his player positioning, creating space and found it all clicking together in 2000. If the club hadn't stuffed up it's player payment arrangement and had to let go a few of our star players, we would have had more sustained success in the early 2000s.
One thing that let Sheedy down was he didn't understand the new phase of player drafting. Where Hawks drafted in great players, traded in a few stars, Sheedy in comparison thought we would be ok developing in house.
Another thing that let down from that era was there was no direct successor or successors. To have someone like Sheedy at top, controlling much around the club, when that person steps back it makes a vacuum.
All in all, he was a coach that had been there, done that with nothing more to prove. When the hunger is gone, few that have been up at those heights know when it's time to step away.
