Coach Did Hinkley underperform as Power coach?

Given where they were in the Primus era and then the immediate rise and perennial upper-middle table he has done wonders in an 18 team comp.
True.....

3 wins in 2011 and 16th.

5 wins and a draw in 2012. Remarkably didn't finish bottom 4. They finished 14th.

I know it's random comparing 14th placed sides each year....

I have seen Fremantle finish 14th in 2017 and 2018 and it was way better than ports 2012 side.

Demons finish 14th in 2024 too.

So Port makes finals in 2013. 7th spot, 13 wins and 9 losses. Beats magpies at MCG.

Port finished 5th in 2014, beat tigers at Adelaide oval, then Freo in a semi final then narrowly lost to hawks in preliminary final.

No finals In 2015-6.

Had Hinkley was gone at the end of 2016, Port Adelaide fans would look at him differently

Port supporters don't like him because they "exist to win premierships" which Hinkley hasn't done. However, was there a year they were clearly the best team and choked? I'm not sure there was.

I look at those chances Port Adelaide were contenders, those 4 preliminary finals.

2014: Narrowly lost to hawks. Had they won that, the 2014 grand final vs swans would be 50 - 50 at MCG.

2020: narrow loss to tigers in the prelim final at Adelaide oval. Had Port Adelaide made the 2020 grand final, they face cats in the Gabba. I honestly think Port would win. They beat cats in the qualifying final.

2021: Lost a preliminary final vs dogs in Adelaide oval. Horrible 1st quarter. 5 goals down at quarter time, Port still could of slowly battled back. Lost by 75 points. Even if Port made that grand final, no one was beating the demons in Perth in that 2021 grand final, despite being in Perth.

2024: weird one. Lost the cats in a qualifying final at home. Lucky to beat hawks in a semi final. Swans were not great. Sydney look like in cruise control maintaining a 20-30 points lead.

In short of all those 4 years of 2014, 2020, 2021 and 2024. No Doubt 2020 was their best chance for a flag, despite not having the best squad in any season under Hinkley

2014 & 2021 were both big missed opportunities.

2014 more so as we would have faced a pretty weak Sydney team in the GF. The players had the fitness edge over the competition with the capability to run over sides in the final quarters.

The rest of the years, we were flat tracking most of those seasons. Good enough to beat the average sides but non competitive against the league leaders.

Ken's emotional game plan is great for a team starved of success but know his limits. He cannot deliver premierships as his game plan and structure never holds up when it matters most. It is disappointing to see our team revert to kicking it long to non favorable contests when the so called game plan falls apart.

Our playing list has always been questionable but after 12 years in the helm, you would have thought he would have learnt how to build a strong team, but no. He relies too much on star players saving his arse when his job is being threatened with fluky wins.

I am not prepared to write off our playing list until a competent coach comes in and gives proper structure and discipline to the group. Then we can judge the playing group.

2021 was a disgrace if the stories about what happened pre-game were right. He should have been sacked long before that. But that should have been the last straw.
2020 we had our best team that was the premiership we should have won. The others would have required a fair bit of good fortune that we generally don't enjoy.

I am still not convinced about Port beating swans in 2014.

Sydney beat Port Adelaide twice. Swans still beat Port Adelaide at the scg without Kurt Tippett and Buddy Franklin.

You can question then playing list in The last 10 or 12 seasons.

But 4 preliminary finals and 6 finals wins in 12 years is a fair bit of success to look back on

Lay off Ken mate. He's been a successfull coach who was constantly bagged by fickle ungrateful supporters like yourself.

WTF do people always hark back to 2011/12, a solid 13 plus years ago to justify that Hinkley has done some sort of great job? It's a football and list generation ago. Yet nobody mentions the fact that Brisbane finished 17th, 17th and 18th in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and managed to play in 2 GFs and win a flag?

And what about Voss? Prelim in second year, missing finals in 4th. Everybody thinks he's gone. Hinkley missed finals 2 years running after his second year prelim, then losses a home elim and then misses again for the next 3. Nothing to see here. Understand it's just trolling now but FMD how this serial loser inbred Hick gets so much slack and kudos is one of life's great mysteries.

You are slightly wrong here.

2011-12, Port Adelaide were terrible.

2013-4, Port made and won finals.

2015-6, no finals.

2017, Elim final loss .

He didn't miss the next 3 years.

2018-9, narrow miss out on finals.

2020-21, preliminary finals.

2022, no finals.

2023, top 4 but lost 2 finals .

2024, top 4, lost qualifying final, won semi final, lost preliminary final.

2025, on track to miss out on finals, unless form is changed.

Why is it that everyone frames the 2011/12 Port team as completely terrible not as a team that was in a rebuild like so many others. Port retired players from the 04 and 07 teams to get more games into the guys that Hinkley had in the first 2 years.
This is always looked at as Hinkley was the reason we made the finals. What it was the guys who were playing through those 2 years had around 100 games when Hinkley took them to the Prelim v Hawthorn. The next 5 years of a Hinkley team with Dixon and the players that he wanted we made the finals 1 out of the next 5 seasons.

I count the days till he's gone.

They were terrible.

They have mostly been good since Hinkley took over.

The end.

It brings me great joy that he's caused you so much suffering, but the fact remains he took over a joke and had you very competitive most seasons. Once the succession plan and a life with Carr was announced, the club went right back to shit. Enjoy.
Kenneth's legacy as a coach will be nothing, because the only list he'll ever appear on, is most games without making a Grand Final. He will be the modern day Bill Stephen. Who?

You didn't contest anything I said though.

His reign has been like Port Adelaide's in the AFL - okay, but nothing special. They are that sort of club. A winning grand final and a 119 grand final in 30 odd years. But lots of finals.

If Ken didn't arrive, you could probably throw another 5 or 6 years of being terrible in there and maybe starting a 4th rebuild. Likely on a NM type of trajectory where they may hope to play finals after 10 years of missing out.

Not so. Hinkley wasn't the reason we improved in 13/14. I attribute most of the improvement to Walsh, Richardson and Burgess because after they left we made the finals once in 5 years with the Kenneth show. The other reason was the players that were fast tracked during 11/12 seasons had 2 seasons more of playing and we added Wines, Wingard and a few recruits and we improved.

No Hinkley genius this is just media piff made up by sycophants like Wheatley and Wilson.

The records will show Hinkley improved Port in 13/14, much like they will show he never took them to a GF.

That is very true but like everything the full story is more nuanced. Like I'm sure not making any Grand Finals may not be entirely Kenneth's fault, but without any contrary evidence I will continue to point the finger at him.

Exactly - the story is also more nuanced than Ken as the blame getter for not delivering a premiership.

It works both ways. You can't pick and choose.
