Port supporters are notorious for overrating their lists. The bottom 6-10 is where you'll find the pain in most seasons. It's also difficult to find many elite defensive or forward groups in any one off Port season over the past decade.

Stanley/Blicavs actually. Two mobile players in tandem, where Blicavs was an AA midfielder at the same time. We had 2x All Australian KPFs and an AA small forward as well. Miers and Close as creators. Stewart, Zuthrie, Tuohy and Duncan as rebounders. SDK, Henry and Kolo as KPD options. Smith and Holmes on the wings. Dangerfield, Selwood and Cam Guthrie leading the midfield. More talent than any Port side since 2004. Less weak links or creaking veterans compared to the Geelong 2012-2021 period. More fire-power and running options. That was what made the difference.

You will get found out in finals if your squad is paper thin and you have serious deficiencies. Scott has dealt with that many seasons and Hinkley has for all seasons.

The list is irrelevant when you look at the advantage Port had. Go and look at it.

To completely capitulate in the first quarter is an indictment that the coach should 100% be a part of.

It absolutely could be - but it's not a foregone conclusion that it is. Otherwise you could apply the same logic to every coach every season. Why didn't Geelong or Collingwood win the flag last season etc.

But the way some Port fans talk, it's as if Ken was the sole reason we didn't win a premiership, and the possibility of the list not being good enough, or the support staff (incl. fitness,medical etc) weren't good enough etc. is unfathomable.

Everything is Ken's fault, and the moment he steps out of the door, the club will win multiple premierships apparently.

Players that have stalled in their development will suddenly become All Australians etc etc.

Ken obviously has a part to play, but the best coach in the world won't win a premiership with a poor list, whilst an average coach may win a premiership with an amazing list. I don't think we have a poor list, and there's been times it has been good enough and we've fallen just short. Luck or coaching or other?

Gawn is the best ruck in recent times was a huge part of their success. His ability to impact on games and lift was phenomenal, and nothing to do with coaching. I can confidently say that no Gawn, no premiership. That's the value he brings. His 1-2 punch with Luke Jackson was massively influential.

May and Lever were probably the best defensive pairing in the AFL - maybe second behind McGovern and Barrass.

Petracca and Oliver both absolutely elite that season.

Then you look at some of the other names:

But as I said, it comes down to the weakest 6. There's not many that i'd consider 'weak' here.

I liked him being there, because he always had them overperforming. Never a risk of a flag because they were too good to build a list that could actually win.
Actually, never isn't factual. They nearly struck gold in 2020 when they still had Gray/Boak etc. in their twilight and the youthful exuberance of Butters/Rozzee/Duursma

When Ken leaves, I know there will be short term regression. But it might allow them to find elite talent and they might strike gold with a master tactician.

Imagine if Ken, (or Voss at Carlton or Scott at Essendon for that matter) had a competent recruiting department. Could be dangerous. But all 3 are polishing a turd at the moment. Good coaches, but being set up to fail by the club and board.
