I just got a call from a friend in Melb saying that it was just said on the footy show that L Matthews has told his players he doesn't care how they get there, as long as they are there by 5pm Saturday (in Melbourne), and that they are responsible for their own accommodation??

Surely even Eddie isnt' silly enough to belive that! cause if he does - he is WRONG!

No it isn't true...what is true is that Matthews has given the team the option to travel seperately.

As something he rates as 0.1% of a factor in relation to travel, he was willing to give it a try.

The team train in Brisbane tomorrow arvo. Rather than travel as a team to Melbourne on Friday night or Saturday morning/arvo - they have been given a number of options of flights, to suit themselves and their personal lives. And seeing as they aren't travelling as a 'team' all together, they dont' have to wear team uniform.

They can fly down on certain flights either tomorrow evening or saturday morning or early saturday arvo. And when flying they can wear their civvies, as a person, rather than travelling as a football player.

There has been nothing said about them having to get their own way there, or their own accommodation. Seriously do you think the board of directors would condone players having to get their own accommodatiion with a couple of days notice?

Someone is grasping at straws by making it out like Matthews is the bad guy in all this. And that is saying something coming from me, seeing as I am not a great Matthews fan.

Why does it make matthews look the bad guy?? They revealed this on talkin footy and they agreed in was a good idea. Brisbane arnt the best road side, so something different wouldnt hurt.

whats the big deal??

You are right about the accommodation side of things, i didnt hear him say anything about that but im sure he did say that as long as the players were in melbourne by 5 pm saturday he didnt care how they got there as long as they were there. Ithink it was on the radio or somthing but i did hear it.......

I was asking in my original post if that is what was said....going by what i was told on the phone and the responses here....I am not going to excuse Matthews if he is being a twit.

BUT.....seeing as I don't get the bloody show for another 2 hours, I am going to stick up for him in the context it has been presented to me. OH yeah and as for seeing talking footy, well unless I get my VCR working properly or stay up till 2 am I don't get to see that either.

And btw smokin - I am agreeing with you - something different can't hurt. However it being promoted (or so I was told which is what I was asking about - as Matthews 'not caring' and telling his players to find their own way there and their own place to stay) is not on in my book.

Geez ask a question get told you are wrong for supporting your coach....and it isn't often I do that either.

Danni, it's likely that Eddie and co just elaborated a little to make it more interesting-sounding. The idea of the players getting their own choice of flights to suit themselves I think is a good idea, as Shane Crawford said on the Footy Show, it gives players a chance to come down early on Sat, or later, cause some players do better with less 'down-time'. But yeah, the way it sounded was that Lethal had told them to get down there any way they felt like, which to me sounded a little far-fetched. I don't see that travelling together as a team is necessarily important.

i dont remember eddie saying they were responsible for their own accomodation

the story is that matthews has given them freedom in how and when they get here, aslong as they are here by 5pm friday

i think its a good idea, a lot of people handle interstate trips different, some hate waiting around in a strange place for ages while others like to be early and well prepared

i think its a great idea and could be a sign of things to come
